Thread: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    Re: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    So if you were to make the deck Monoblue. Would it look like this?

    // Lands
    14 Island
    4 Mishra's Factory
    3 Wasteland

    // Creatures
    4 Phyrexian Dreadnought
    2 Trinket Mage/Vendillion Clique/Sower of Temptation

    // Spells
    2 Wind Zendikon
    2 Spell Snare
    2 Spell Pierce
    4 Daze
    2 Trickbind
    4 Force of Will
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Stifle
    3 Counterbalance
    2 Sensei's Divining Top
    4 Standstill

    Or is there anything you would change?

    Re: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    Without fetches Brainstorm and SDT both lose something. If you really want to go that direction then I think Brainstorm becomes Ponder in a truly mono-blue build. What you do about CounterTop is also not clear. Being able to lay a fetchland next to CounterTop and see 6 cards on any given spell is one of the very broken things you're giving up. I think there's a chance that you're just better off running Counterspell and some form of removal in place of the 5 slots CounterTop is taking up. Also, with no Engineered Explosives you have zero removal in the build and anything that leaks in around the edges is going to cause problems.

    If you really wanted to try a Dreadstill list that was only blue this is what I think you'd start with:

    // Lands
    14 Island
    4 Mishra's Factory
    3 Wasteland

    //Creatures
    4 Phyrexian Dreadnought
    2 Vendillion Clique
    2 Sower of Temptation

    //Spells
    4 Ponder
    4 Force of Will
    4 Daze
    3 Spell Snare
    2 Counterspell
    4 Stifle
    2 Trickbind
    4 Standstill
    2 Echoing Truth
    2 Powder Keg

    The 4 removal slots are just an idea, really you could go a bunch of different ways there as long as you can remove Tarmogoyf, Counterbalance and tokens. There are 4 slots of dedicated removal instead of the usual 2 because without Trinket Mages, SDT and fetches it is going to be harder to find the things you need. Trinket Mages without Engineered Explosives and SDT are much less interesting in the deck.

    Marius Hausmann (Wasteland) went undefeated with Ur Dreadstill, which is a great accomplishment - so my props to him. Looking forward to a tourney report from him!

    Thanks for the suggestion Foolatook. It looks solid. If you don't mind, I would like to post that list in the Budget Decks Thread.

    If anyone has any suggested changes for that list, let me know.

    Yeah I saw that. This is not an isolated event either, he's been playing Dreadstill for months in the German meta preparing for this and doing very well.

    So Marius Hausmann and me both piloted his latest Ur Dreadstill to a top 64 finish at GP Madrid with 2220 participants being the only 2 Dreadstill plazers on day 2 with 200+ participants. On day 1 we both finished 8 - 1, however both of us had won 3 Byes in a GP trial. The deck worked very well both days and especially the sideboard was really awesome.

    Gongrats for both of you! Are going to write report? Do you remember what against you play at day 2, and witch you won and lose?

    Re: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    I would really like to see a report on both decks and how they did. Ur Dreadstill has some real mojo going for it and a lot of staying power. Roodmistah and a few others have piloted that deck to top finishes in enough tourneys now that it's not just play skill, although that's obviously there also.

    I've been reading these forums for a long time but registered to comment on your results Marius. I've been following you and Mike Filler for sometime and because of both your successes in the past couple months I have stuck with the UR version rather than the green splash everyone else recommends. I look forward to a tournament report from you, and your thoughts on what you would change now after experiencing GP Madrid.

    Re: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    Since i have learn again for final exams, here just a short summary :-)

    Round 1-3 i have byes cause of the GPT in Nürnberg i won

    Round 4 i play against mono R goblins which starts which does not much since his first play is mountain relic in both games. -> 4:0

    Round 5 is against ANT. Game 1 i finish over a fast Dreadnought, game 2 i have the nought too which swings even for 12 dmg but he manages to win with a nauseam at 5 life (ritual brainstorm led infernal, brainstorm into 2 more rituals), game 3 i win with turn 3 counterbalance / top. -> 5:0

    Round 6 is again against nearly the same goblin-deck, game 1 turn 2 nought wins, game 2 he has 3 lackeys + a vial in round 3 but only 2 warchiefs to put in. I'm able to trade 4:1 with explosive and block 1 of the warchiefs dead with a factory (stifle on iniciator). -> 6:0

    Round 7 i play again vs. ANT and have, which i have to admid quite a lucky topdeck in game 1 - i had started with land, top. He plays u-sea, duress, which i daze (cause i had not a 2. land in my hand but a ful powerhouse of stifle/nought, standstill, spell snare. He goes on with chrome mox, led, led, ritual infernal, sac led - i draw a card with top: FORCE OF WILL! Nought finishes 3 turns later. Game 2 is won against alone by counterbalance/top. -> 7:0

    Round 8 i play against Ichorid and manage to win game 1 due to a 2. turn nought with force-backup for his breakthrough. Game 2 i have tu mull to 4 and do not find any solutions. Game 3 i have the nuts with Force, 2 relics in the first 3 turns and round 4 trinket mage on crypt while he fails to hit me with his 2 therapies once due to 3 brainstorms. -> 8:0

    Round 9 i thought i played against UGR Dreadstill cause i saw tropical / volcanic / trinket mage / factory / waste in turn 1 which lost against a turn 2 nought with force + daze + stifle for his explosive and in game 1 i got beaten by 2 tarmogoyfs while have taken a mulligan on 4 (not 1 coloured land in the 3 previous starting hands). Game 3 we both play not agressive, but i can't manage to get a top or c-balance online, while having "topdecked" 3 noughts without stifle. On 6 lands my opponent casts "glen elendra archmage" (wtf) and this simply wins, since it counters my nxt top and the explosives on 2 for his 2 goyfs (had not any solutions) -> 8:1

    Day 2:

    Round 1 play again vs ANT and win the first game over mana screw and the 2. game over counterbalance/top. -> 9:1

    Round 2 goes against a Bant survival which is outnumbered game 1 by spell snare and double standstill. Game 2 i waste 2 lands and he is stuck on a savannah for 3 turns while i dig for a good control-hand with 2 spell snares and 1 force. So when he manages to get finally a goyf into play, trinket mage on relic is already waiting for him. a 2. Goyf is followed by a 2. trinket mage on another relic and a 3. goyf is spellsnared. At this point he scoopes. -> 10:1

    Round 3 i play against Dimitry Nikitin, probably the best Aggroloam player in the world on the featurematch-table (not being featured by anyone lol^^) - Game 1 he mulls to 6 but has a start with double mox, land, knight of the reliquary for which i dont have a force. I play turn 2 nought, but he topdecks another Knight, a Goyf and a turn later ANOTHER Knight which is too much for me. We fight a long game 2 afterwards, in which i'm able to shoot his first chalice on 1 down with a explosive while a goyf deals some dmg to me, before i have the 1. relic. I never match to draw a counterbalance, while he draws another chalice and one more Knight, which is too much for my factories - he is on 6, me on 5, but i can't kill him with my factories and the trinket mage, cause my Lightning Bolt would only run into his chalice. -> 10:2

    Round 4 i play against Control-Rock. On the play i put down a 2. turn nought, force his removal, waste his land AND put a standstill to play afterwards. But he has another spotremoval, i draw only crap in the standstill and loose then against crucible / elspeth etc. ...
    Game 2 lasts quite long, he extirpates my wastelands / volcanics, but since he has no top in play, my standstills with 2 factories are devastating for him and beat him to 0. Game 3 is similar, after fighting a long game i have finally 4 lands +1 factory, top AND standstill over it with 2 trickbinds and another standstill in my hand, he has 4 lands in play and 0 cards. He is on 10 life when times are called and i dont have the timr to finally kill him -.- -> 101

    Round 5 i play the mirrormatch against Muradin and have simply more luck then him with my noughts. -> 111

    Round 6 i play against merfolk and win game 1 after breaking his standstill for dreadnought + trickbind with double force-backup. Game 2 i mulligan to 6 and loose to 4 (!) spellstutter sprites which even counter my Firespout. Game 3 i explosive his vial, but don't draw relevant cards, a red plast is countered by a sprite and when i finally match to get the game unter control i'm already on low life, which is enough for his final sprite. -> 111

    Round 7 i play against U/B Reanimator (similar to the build that won the GP). Game 1 he duresses me and plays show and tell 2 round later which brings an archon in against which i scoop. Thinking he plays dream halls i don't board in relics or the crypt but only the red blasts. Game 2 he does not play any relevant cards, while i draw ONLY lands. A brainstorm from my side brings 2 more lands and a nought (i had already 1 in my hand but no stifle). At this time he is on 8 life and i have 3 factories which ,are needled. Skillful i draw the 4. factory and FINALLY the stifle for my nought which wins game 2. Game 3 i have turn 3 the counter/top lock online and beat him slowly with a factory. EOT he plays wipe away on the balance and in his turn thoughtseizes it. I continue the beating and manage to have a force on top of the deck with some blue cards in my hand which he can't discard due to my game-winning sensei's top. When i find a 2. counterbalance my opponent seams to be quite angry and when he looses against the factory 2 turns later he slams his deck toe the table (as if the matchup would be so good for him...) -> 121

    In the Final Round 8 i play against again Rock (d'oh). Game 1 i have round 2 top/counterbalance but he has already his top too online. About round 6 he plays a tombstalker which would not a problem since i could play stifle/nought in the nxt round. But when he gets a moat into play i's scooptime for me. Game 2 he beats me to 1 (!) with a tarmogoyf, while i turn his manabase tu dust with waste/crucible, before i trade a factory against the goyf, which comes again the round after. His nxt goyf is countered by ma balance and i slowly move into the now turned over beatdown-mode. a sword on my factory gives me 2 life and the option, to force again. This option is used 2 turns later against his tombstalker. Since he has only 3 basics in his deck he cant play his expsneive spells and finally looses to 2 factories. After that there are 2min left to play and we draw, both being for sure in the top 64 (perhaps he even was in the top32, but that i don't know)
    ==> 122

    Greetz from Germany again,
    Marius Hausmann

    Re: [Deck] Dreadstill - Enter the Fist

    For the question what i would change about the Deck: Nothing, but if i would have played against more Bant i probably would have wanted some perishs (which would have won against Nikitin too)

    Awesome, it's 3am was just going to head to bed but noticed your report, thanks Marius. Looks like two of the draws was close to wins which would've shot you up to top 32, but still going 12-3-2 in a 2220+ tournament is amazing. As for your comment on adding perish to the SB, is that really worth it to add 2 or so underground seas?

    Nice job ^^

    By the way, I saw you used altered Dreadnoughts in another tournament. Were you allowed to play them here or did you use normal ones?

    1. Where is the list that you guys did so well in GP posted?

    2. IMO the power of Dreadstill is nearly inversely 1:1 with the number of answers an opponenty has to enchantment/artifact (most notably grip). As the hate for CB decreases this deck will put up better and better numbers.

    Marius's list is on Wizards website for undefeated day 1 guys:

    http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazin...day1undefeated

    It's the exact same list him and Mike Filler have been romping the GPTs in Germany with.

    I have Marius' match against Dimitry on camera, I will post it on SqueeTV.de during the next days. Sorry, got quite a lot of other stuff to take care of right now.

    Hey congrats Mar on your impressive performance. I'm going to try to attend GP Columbus and follow in your footsteps. Lots of ANT matchups for you...that's great to hear. ANT is basically a bye for Dreadstill so always nice to get more then three haha.

    That Ur list is as good as Dreadstill gets. It's one card main deck off of Rodney's build that won the Source Anniversary tourney more than 16 months ago. That's amazing stability in this constantly changing meta.
