Prompted by this exchange, I decided to create a new Adept Question.
I have blatanly ignored his suggestions for questions and created my own.Originally Posted by Zach Tartell

Leaping over a table to attack someone...
j/k
One night at a little draft, I was losing to a deck I really thought I shouldn't be, and it kind of got under my skin, and so when my opponent announced a suboptimal blocking arrangement, I made him stick to it and wouldn't let him take it back. Now, since this was just some pissant little draft, that was definitely reflecting poorly on me...until the game was over (his mistake cost him the match), when he WENT OFF at me. He spent three minutes nonstop calling me a giant dick, and more, and worse. I was really kind of shocked, and a little defensive because I knew I wasn't 100% in the right, but jeez.
It ended up happily though - at the Eventide release, we played again, and he began our match by apologizing for his overreaction, saying he'd been having a bad week, and I admitted I guess I WAS being kind of a dick, and it was everything short of hugs all around.
In the Top at the Columbus GPT in Rochester, I asked to count the cards in my opponents sideboard, and it was 1 short. I by no means think this is a scumbag move at all, but the fact of the matter was I basically knew I flat out couldn't win the match unless he gets really sloppy (he's playing Blue Skies, I'm playing Belcher). I've had people ask to count my sideboard, and, surprise surprise, I've been 1 short thanks to Burning Wish...
Some opponents I probably haven't been as friendly to as I should have been (ie, they're doing a good job of trying to have a good time and be talkative and friendly), and it's likely because I'm doing poorly and will end up dropping if I lose that match.
EDIT:
I know. Who does that??
No one. As I recall, not even the great bear himself made it across the table.
I seem to recall going to a tournament, watching a person in particular get pissy about the fact that he lost to a friend of mine when he felt he's the bigger, better, badder magic player and threw his deck across the room at the guild....
I also seem to remember this same person pulling a knife on ME and telling me he'd kill me after his friends binder got stolen. And no, I didn't steal the binder.

You cannot know the sweetness of Victory, without first dwelling in the agony of Defeat.
I'm pretty sure that I (and Braves, troopatroop, Afro, Watcher, B is for Bigjob, Mathman, and CA) used to play in the worst behaved local tournies. We had all sorts of nonsense to deal with, and you had to have a pretty thick skin to play there.
The old Gamer's Guild was like a den of thieves. You could leave your stuff alone for a second and it would be gone. It was so bad that when one of the known theives walked in, it would be announced that he was in the store and you should watch your stuff.
The people were also rowdy. JimP once got hit in the eye with a 20-sider. Players started showing up drunk and/or high. I think once a case of merchandise got tipped over (my memory is failing me on that one - maybe the top was just broken).
Also, players cheated like mad there.
Plus Mike Hayner would walk around and gay-touch your hands and shoulders. He'd also rest his big gut on your shoulders.![]()
Joe Snyder was a ruffian supreme. He was just rude and intimadating to other players (but never to little kids - he had a weird sense of honor). But the kid that annoyed me the most - the one that really went out of his way to break balls and be an asshat - was Matt Cole. He just tried to be a jerk. One time I had to play him and he took whatever card of mine that he didn't like and threw it across the room. Damn that pissed me off. So I took his whole deck a threw it across the store. (I know, I know, real mature on my part.) Cards were fluttering everywhere. He then said, that it wasn't even his deck so he wasn't picking it up. I countered with, "I'm fine with that." And then it brought me great immature joy to watch him pick up all those cards.
Anyway, multiple people were banned from that store. And then they'd sneak back in with hoodies and/or hats on.
Looking back at the Guild, it is no suprise that I am amazed at the atmosphere of stores like Hadley's Off the Wall Games. Everyone is soooo nice there.
I hated most of the guys from Albany for a long time, mostly because the people Matt just mentioned usually came along with them to events. There were a ton of people back in that era that just made events awful to play at.
Granted, I'm a sore loser, but I'm not an asshole on principle, and I'm only throwing my own cards (I haven't made that play in a while, and when I did, it was only onto the table in front of me).
I think Syracuse is glad Scott Wolfe (aka Dirty) isn't playing anymore. Kid was off the hook arrogant, even though his decks generally weren't amazing, and he refused to believe anything that we told him about his decks until months later, when he would "independently" arrive at the same conclusion. He was notorious for flying off the handle when he lost, it sucked. This is nothing I haven't told him face to face before, btw (no shit-talking behind kids' backs).
As for single memorable events, two come to mind:
1) The exchange between LegoArmyMan and Adam Phillips at Eli's D4D. Lego gets all noble about the playmat with pics of a scantily clad woman on it, and then won't drop the issue. He goes into rules-lawyer mode, Adam gets pissed, throws Lego's deck, and drops/gets DQ'd.
2) Joe Snyder and Jesus come to near-blows at Big Arse 2. Who gets in a fight at a Magic tournament?

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
I remember one of the first Guild tournaments I went to was when I was just getting back into the game from like a 3 year break. Not to brag but I'm a nice guy. In fact I could go out on a limb and say that when I'm playing Magic at a tournament I am one of the nicest, calm, and level headed person you'll ever meet. Anyways the first time I play against Curtis at the guild I am playing survival.dec. Anyways I start up some friendly chatter with this thug looking guy I have never met that goes on for like 5 minutes. He asks what I am playing and I politely say Survival. His first turn Cabal Therapy nets 2 Survivals to my yard. I was fucking heated like WHOA. Not the worst I've ever been, but it was up there.
Adam Chambers also is a dick to play against simply because he knows he is better than everyone else and makes sure you know it too. I was a huge nub when Trix with Necro was big in 1.X. He was playing Counter Sliver and I walked into a Disenchant both games unprotected. He would scream "20 POINT BOLT!!!!" throughout Flights. Still irks me to this day.
Yeah, that whole not responding thing in here is annoying. But This. Adam was a cool guy when he wasn't in a match, but dear god in heaven did he fucking turn into prickmaster supreme when you sat down across from him and he wouldn't need to outplay you because he'd just get under your skin and fucking irk you into making play mistakes.
Also: Albany crew, Guesses on who pulled the knife on me? Hint: He's a ruffian that liked kids unless he was shiftfaced drunk.

Discussion stifled because no one gives a damn.
In the Philippines I'm told it's very common practice to take bribes for concessions (I realize this happens in the US also to some extent, but it goes along with the culture here). One of my rounds at GP Manila (block portion) I drew and the guy tried to slyly ask, but I politely declined. I am an ambassador of Peace and Liberty after all.
I haven't witnessed a whole lot of crazy stuff, but people can get pretty heated over this game for sure.
