Though derided initially, "Nourishing Lich," the potent storm-based Nefarious Lich+Nourishing Shoal/Autochthon Wurm/Arcades Sabboth combo deck is tearing up metagames around the world, most notably Germany, which is getting rolled over by this beast like the Battle of Kursk all over again.
It's easy to see why: Nefarious Lich, Zuran Orb, Culling the Week, Nourish Shoal, supported by Soul Spike and Bottle Gnomes out of the board, well, it's easy to see why our DTB has been turned upside down, practically overnight.
Good luck stopping NL w/ Counterbalance. What are you going to reveal Brine Hag? Good luck with that. Is it time to start packing Krosan Grip in your sideboard? Desperate times...
Metagame upheavals are a good thing. It invigorates our format, causes us to reasses long-held assumptions (that are apparently false) and spur us to create answers to menacing problems.
So, are you prepared to face Nourishing Lich at your next tournament?
Recent testing has revealed that Canadian Threshold is woefully unprepared to face Nourishing Lich. While It used to be safe to bring Canadian Thresh to an event, hoping to dodge those Lich players, or hoping that they don't show. But now with it's popularity on the rise, especially in Germany, I can no longer compete, and I am debating switching decks altogether due to the massive amount of sideboard changes it would require to beat Nourishing Lich.
This deck effectively forces the Thresh player to mulligan into their singleton Wipe Away, and pray they can draw 3 lands before the Lich hits.
It is for this reason that I am abandoning my deck of choice in favor of a deck better prepared to beat Nourishing Lich. From now on I will be piloting Pitch World in attempt to compete with the metagame juggernaut that is Nourishing Lich.
I've actually resorted to a set of Chrome Moxen and main deck meddling magi to help deal with this monster, as well as the full set of sideboard Erases, in a weird metagamed version of Uwb fish. Even then I'm barely hitting 50/50. Something needs to be done about this.
they haunt minds...
