Basically. Removing mana burn is the only way to open up the "life matters" area of game design.
For my confessions, they burned me with fire/
And found I was for endurance made
Let it be known that I played Enchantress at Feinstein's Mox tournament on Saturday and can attribute my Round 3, game 3 loss (sitting at 1-1) to mana burn. I was land screwed, my only lands being a triple Utopia Sprawled Forest and a Wild Growthed Serra's Sanctum. I took 11 from mana burn that game and lost in pathetic fashion. I don't have a strong opinion on either side of the matter, but nobody can say that mana burn is irrelevant.
I once lost a game to Blessing of Leeches.
Mana burn is irrelevant.

What's the deal with these new card refering to the "battlefield"?

Haha, awesome. I'm sorry to admit, while the 'battlefield' is a little hard to swallow, I appreciate wizards making an effort to add more flavor to the game.
Further indicating that mana burn is out, or at least heavily changed, Rosewater mentions in his article today that he'll talk about mana burn in a column a few weeks from now, right around when 2010 previews might start up.
Personally, I don't think mana burn is that complicated and while it doesn't affect most games, it comes up often enough that I'd rather it stayed. I play Eva Green a lot, and mana burn can become relevant with awkward dark rituals.
I won three games yesterday in a row with Hunding Gjornersen as a kill condition in Landstill. I've also lost a tournament because somebody Deflectioned a Flare to my Keeper of Kookus and my red was tapped out. Retarded shit happens all the time.
Mana Burn things happen far more often and in far more relevant decks.
Wizards is whoring themselves to the kiddies with all the new keywords, abilities, mythic rares etc., but I think they should at least bring back "Bury" while they're at it.
I agree, the best piece of text in all Magic history is "Bury all creatures.".
I too hate those changes!
I too will get over it like I've been doing since '96.
But while I'm at it, let me bash WotC a little.
Nice that they came up with a name for the in play zone, but couldn't they be a little more creative and less dumb? Battlefield isn't overused enough?
I don't care if removing mana burn opens up "life matter" design space. It closes "mana in the pool" design space, an area of the game that should've been explored better.
"Want all, lose all."
