    Re: Magic 2010 Rules Changes

I am currently teaching 2 new people to add to my play group, and they are catching on pretty well. I first introduced them to a deck full of vanilla creatures, to get them to understand each steps, phases and combat. Then I slowly introduced other things. They don't really find the old rules confusing. Every new player will have to learn the rules no matter what, nothing will change that.

Based on the random casual scenes I've played, I could just imagine them doing a tweak on a few things, that I could already imagine. As those randoms I've played were somehow confused on a few things.

    1) Doing things on my 2nd main phase. It seems like right after I attacked, newer players tend to think that your turn is over as there's nothing else you could do (in their opinion). Sometimes they tend to get a bit overboard and draw in to their card when I finished my attack but not saying "I end my turn".

    2) Loss of Life vs Damage. Some thinks and do not understand why they couldn't use Circle of Protection: Black versus cards that would cause them to lose life. I could imagine this being tweaked in the future >_>

    Re: Magic 2010 Rules Changes

I understand that Wizards wants to make the game easier to understand so that more people pick up the game and beginners have an easier time as this makes them money. But, in my oppinion, 'dumbing down the game' aka making it more intuitive/easier will have the opposite result; not only for veteran players quitting the game, but once those 'new' players have played Magic for some time, they will get bored and quit as well.

Many of the younger kids that play in my group have said that they tried Pokemon and Yugio, but Magic was more fun because it is more challenging. This also brings up the argument, why do/did they label the packs 'Expert' and then attempt to simplify the game? This seems very counterintuitive if you ask me.

I think that Magic the Gathering is what it is because it is more difficult than other comparable CCG's. Changing that takes away from the game as a whole. I think that if they want to make a more simplified game that caters to a younger crowd, then make more portal sets to help them into the game or make annother game entirely for them. Don't change the dynamics of the most popular CCG every printed just to try and make a buck as the success may be shortlived.

Why not, though, it's not very "intuitive"!

Haha. Well, it *mostly* would suck for mages and casters of spells -- Tendrils, naturally, comes to mind, but several spells cause loss of life... The loss of life spells are what decks run specifically to get around CoP's! ...so, that "intuitive simplification" would, imo, suck.

I cannot do as I wish because they took that from me.

"Not THAT bad" means you don't like it, and you wish it wouldn't change, but you have it in yourself to look past it for whatever reason. I've probably played longer than you and have gone through more changes in the game than you have. I don't have it in me to watch the game get easier, get boring, and get turned into a giant money tree with no thought to the fruits it's sowing--again.

And the reason(s) you are happy about the "LED stuff" is because:

a.) You don't play storm combo.

b.) You didn't just buy Japanese LEDs (about $400 a set) right before they came out with this nonsense.

c.) You want to win, and this makes it easier to win against storm combo.

    d.) All of the above.

Besides, all the other players around here are quitting, so I would have no one to play with even if I had been able to look past the shit they are changing--again.

Jesus. That better not ever happen. If it does, I will light at least 6 magic players on fire.

I don't know if you are kidding or not, but comments like these are why I tend to not take the "veteran" players seriously: they over react to anything that might "change".

There are so many drama queens in that thread, it's almost like a telenovela...not that I'm complaining, it's entertaining, but I can't believe most of them really mean what they write.

    That was my valuable contribution.

Well yeah, i would like it to stay as it is, i can't denie that, but unlike others i'm sure that i will still enjoy the game after the changes that will come. Im not sure when i started, i think it was somewhere between edition 6 and 7.

But Magic is still better than Yu-Gi-Oh (played that for 3 years or so), cause there you basically had to get a new deck every 3 months, so im kinda used to that stuff.

    a) True, i dont play Combo, cause i don't like it, i hardly play anything but control.

    b) Right, but i know what you mean, happend to me when my Affinity pet deck was halfway done when they knocked it out.

    c) I don't consider storm a problem, i just don't like it, thats all there is to it, but i can't denie that i do not say no to additional wins.

    Re: Magic 2010 Rules Changes

Question regarding the new combat rules,

    From the article:

If multiple creatures block the same attacker, the attacking player orders those blockers to show which is first in line for that attacker's damage, which is second, and so on.
Are 'first blocker', 'second blocker', etc. identified as such in the rules? I.e. Would a card that worked only on the 'first blocker' be allowed under the new rules?

It will not be possible to reliably answer that question until the new Comprehensive Rules are published. My own guess is that referencing 'first blocker' and the like will probably be allowed.

The Ferrett's article on the M10 changes were spot on and far more eloquent than I could produce.

Really? 'Cause I thought he picked only the most stupid complaints on M10 he could find and then proceeded to use them to write seven pages of his habitual preachy screeds.

I enjoyed the article (as I do most of the Ferret's, as opposed to Ferris', work....) but he completely ignored the major irritant of many players - namely the loss of deciding how to split combat damage. Quite frankly, I don't remember seeing any response/alternative proposal from anyone yet. There were several good ideas in Sullivan's article (via EDT & some guy) that we can hope WOTC heeds.

Some points of his were solid, but of course the style of the article, whose insults-per-page-ratio would make IBA proud, didn't really help. Also, he went out of his way to tell us that the game absolutely needs new players to stay alive, but doesn't seem to care at all if established players quit the game because of the rules changes.

    Re: Magic 2010 Rules Changes

I played some matches with the new rules and different decks.
The LED tricks, and the Exiled zone are hurting combo decks quite a bit.

I then played Zoo (Pridemage, Lavamancer) and Goblins (fanatic, incinerator, SGC), and I'd say it's not changing much with the new rules. Also, double/triple blocking + damage split NEVER happened in like 30+ matches.

If they errata the 6 Wishes to work with the exiled zone than I'm ok with the changes.

Obviously, Wizards should now print activated abilities for creatures (sacrifice effects in particular) that are damn more stronger. Otherwise people will just play more vanilla dudes than it is now. And it's already too much (thanks Goyf).
