You can still play with them even if they weren't legal, so long as you owned other lightning bolts. Point being, if I have six thousand dollars in lightning bolts, I don't think there's really a question about tournament legality there: if the Judge has a problem for SOME reason, I'm sure anyone running six thousand dollars in bolts would be happy to show they either own or borrow other copies.
I'm pretty sure Occam knows what he's talking about, considering he's a Summer and rarities collector, and has probably played these in tournaments.

Don't think my word should be taken for granted, least not outside of stuff I collect. In this case, however, the confusion is actually easy to clear up. Misprints can be played as long as they do not obfuscate fraudulently. A card that doesn't have a name (textless, or altered) or doesn't have a readable name still actually has an actual english name, even if it isn't visible or in a language the opponent understands. If you are asked to identify the lightning bolt, the card's name is still "lightning bolt", and the Oracle rules can be retrieved from that if necessary. The card still has to be identifiable, though, so that portion is up for debate, but a card like lightning bolt shouldn't have an issue, least not in a legacy tournament.
The head judge still has the jurisdiction to deem them unrecognisable, of course, but I've never heard of such a case before. I'm going to delete away some of the posts I made as I don't think they really belong here, so this will be the end of that story.

Oops scanned the planar cleansing twice accidentally, should have been another card that I can't pinpoint right now. I play with japanese and korean only since I can read them along with chinese cards, the only exception are the set of german fows that I have in another deck.*I stay away from chinese though I can read them very well, since the older stuffs are hard to come by.
