Starcity's new buy list - Consequences?

What do you think starcity is aiming to do with this new big buy list? All I see happening is the price of staples going up. Alot.

This dude along with the whole SCG will monopolize the format. That is my guess. Who cares anyways, the world is going to end in a year and a half. Didn't y'all watch that John Cusack movie?

honestly, I think they HAVE to do something to get their legacy stock up, they are generally sold out or near it constantly. Also, with the new split format invitational... the standard people in it are going to HAVE to aquire them to play. Unless they are selling the legacy cards with a much smaller margin of profit than usual .... then yes, the cards will be going up.

I have never been happier about investing into Legacy, Vintage, and EDH in 08-09 than I am right now.

I just got alot of my staples in the past 6 months or so, looks like I quickly finish off my duals and whatnot before they skyrocket.

Thankfully I have Tundras Volcanics Seas and both blue Onslaught fetches

Wow. Started playing late 2009, kinda feels good to catch the tail end of the gravy train.

Good thing I have the staples that I (generally) want right now, I hate to see the cost of entry into this format in a year or so.

I just looked at the new prices for some of the cards, $50 wastelands and dual increases +$10-$15. I think forcing the standard players to buy legacy cards will cause a rather large price increase the closer we get to the invitational. I am glad I have invested in 1/2 dual lands already otherwise this would scare me away from the format right now.

Re: Starcity's new buy list - Consequences?

I have playsets of pretty much all the Legacy staples already, except for Sneak Attack, Time Spiral, and Candelabra.

I had previously said that increases in the price of Legacy staples was a sign that the format was popular and healthy, but I might have to retract those words. If SCG is buying Wastelands at $30, those things will probably run for $40-50 in NM condition. That represents way too steep of a barrier for new players.

Legacy is going to go the same way Vintage went!

I am both glad that I bought most of the staples before they got so expensive, and disgusted that this format is going to become even more expensive than vintage... I guess we may start seeing more proxies non-sanctioned tournaments.

Their buy prices were similar up till now. That's the same price they offered on U. Sea a month ago. I think that the difference is now they're making it blatantly obvious that they are looking for this stuff instead of just having that small "see our buy list" button off to one side.

I don't know if I should be happy or sad about this.

Having a lot of existing staples, good.

Pricing people out of the format, not so good.

Because they're such a huge dealer, they can afford to buy and sell at these prices. The problem? This "artificially" raises the prices of the staples, because all I'll hear is, "but Starcity is BUYING them for this much!"

Just because they're buying them doesn't mean anything except it saddens me. Immensely.

Hey DrHealex, you know that small trade binder I had with me the other day? That + my Moat is worth $732 from Starcitygames (as in, the amount I would get if I sold to them). I think now is the time to sell.

I can't see myself playing any deck I don't already have most of the cards for because even if I kept my expensive ones like the Duals, Wastes etc I would have to pour so much money into buying the other very expensive cards it wouldn't be worth it. Now is the time for me to cash out everything but my pet decks it seems....

Re: Starcity's new buy list - Consequences?

I have most of the staples sans Duals. I never really cared about duals because my pet decks didn't require them. It's just unfortunate that as time goes, you will be stuck playing the same archetype. If you want to play something else then you either have to give up your old staples or try to break the bank for them.

At least in Vintage, once you have power you're set.

Whatever, like what I said, give it a year and a half.

i think it is more due to the fact that they are planning to have what...6 sanctioned tournaments in the next 2 months. they will be the only authorized dealer permitted to sell cards there.

having cards people need for tournament is key

Re: Starcity's new buy list - Consequences?

    I find it hilarious:

    "Legacy/Vintage Standouts"

Candelabra is on the list $150. Seems like they're trying to push the price to unload them at $200 comfortably. Seems like a bold move to be even buying Candelabras prematurely due to 1 tournament's success.

Anyways, I'm unloading some cards to SCG at these prices (Candelabras who cares, and some other non-standard Eternal staples, like Candelabra!!)
    Decks that I care about:
    Steel Stompy
    UWx Landstill
    Dreadstalker
    DDFT (10% practice)

Starcity is buying Wasteland at 30$? That seems really high, what do they want all of them?
