Hey guys, I have a Standstill version that I haven't played in a while. I just got my Mental Missteps and am planning on running this deck in an upcoming tournament. In an unknown meta, how should my sideboard look like?
Thanks in advance
Well I got two opposite answers to my question, so yeah...
So looks like you merfolk people had a good showing in the open today
You both did, sorry about that, I was glancing just over your replies while watching star city's legacy coverage.
Wow each top 16 list from this weekend had different meta slots and pulled different things for MM, looks like there are a lot of strong routes to take right now. I'll be interested to see which strategies hold for next weekend's open. Anyone know what Bertoncini's list looked like sunday?
"Dredge isn't a deck, it's public masturbation with graveyard triggers."
there was only 1 list with standstill in the t16, is this card dismissed? im going to play folk on a big tourney this we and wonder if i should run a list with or w/o standstill
This post is lacking. Please see our Site Rules, especially the parts about writing skills and posting in this forum. Thank you.

I think that it just shows that with or without standstill it's a strong (and popular!) deck, and with misstep it is still (maybe moreso) extremely competitive.
So I am starting to think as long as you have the 20 dudes, 10-12 counterspells, and manlands, the other choices aren't that detrimental, and may vary by playstyle, skill, and meta.
I don't think any of those decks' choices were "incorrect" or "correct."
Right now I've been testing Dark Confidant in the 4 flux slot. I can't tell if he's a perfect fit yet, but so far he seems quite powerful.
While Speaking about choices like Dark Confidant, i have to say i test Dismember atm (In mono Blue Merfolk). Losing 4 life and pay 1 seems to be good, especially against creatures i had Problems with.
So here's my List:
4 Aether Vial
4 Force of Will
4 Mental Misstep
4 Daze
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Coralhelm Commander
4 Merrow Rejeerey
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Cursecatcher
3 Dismember
4 Mutavault
4 Wasteland
13 Island
Dismember has worked well in my friend's testing too but 3 main seems like too many. At most I'd probably do 2 main 1 side, I'd be more likely to play 1 main and 1-2 in the side though.
"Dredge isn't a deck, it's public masturbation with graveyard triggers."
Well I was hoping nobody would suggest Dark Confidant until after the SCG Seattle, but since it's out here's my list followed by what I've learned from our gauntlet.
Bobfish:
4 Dark Confidant
4 Cursecatcher
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Lord of Atlantis
3 Merrow Reejerey
3 Coralhelm Commander
4 Aether Vial
4 Force of Will
3 Daze
4 Mental Misstep
2 Umezawa's Jitte
4 wasteland
4 Mutavault
4 Polluted Delta
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Underground Sea ( i only own 2)
5 Island
SB:
1x Daze
2x Echoing Truth
2x Llawon, cephalid empress
3x Relic of progenitus
2x Sower of temptation
2x Kira, Great-Glass Spinner
3x spell pierce
I made this version about a week ago to beat combo and mirror. So I only have one night's testing. I've listed a few points about this version of the deck that I thought people might find helpful.
Although it feels Lord-lite, I cut the 4th Merrow Reejerey for a second Umezawa's Jitte. There were some games where I was doing 12 to myself within 4 turns. (mental misstep 2, Force of will 1, Fetchlands 2, Bob revealing fow5/2cc merfolk)Between 4 adepts and 4 bobs it was usually pretty easy to find one of the two jittes. To be fair I was winning those games without jitte unless it was G1 zoo.
Match Analysis:
While Limited and useless for statistical research, I hope you find it helpful. 5 game 1's and 5 post board games against each deck.
Team America:
We are heavily testing against this deck currently. Hymn, Goyf, their removal suite, and Dark confidant are 2 CC. I've been contemplating switching the pierces in the board to spell snares for that reason. Spell pierce also comes in against combo though. Suggestions please!!!
G1: Win 3, Lose 2. G2: Win 3, Lose 2.
Generally went like this, Did he T1 thoughtseize me?--> Did he break my hand by taking vial etc. Did he get a blowout with a protected hymn? Otherwise, win. Having MM, Daze in hand vs their (Hymn, Daze) is quite bad. It may be a considered bad play but I wasn't tapping out T2 unless I had Fow+Daze or a fistful of swimmers. This decision is much easier with T1 Vial but it felt like T2 was always going to be Hymn or Goyf. Every one of my losses contained one of those T2 plays.
Zoo: G1: win 1, Lose 4. G2: Win 3, Lose 2
Although MM lets us protect against their removal suite it still isn't pretty with Bob MD. Either I would reveal a Fow/Reejerey or my life total would be unsafe to cast bob. I was usually forced to just vial him in for a blocker G1. G2 Kira and Sower get things done. Makes me want to play perish. Needs more testing before I do that. Another note is that Mono U Merfolk went 4/1 against zoo game 1 with 2 kira, 2 Sower in the 4 flex slots.
TES: G1: Win 4, Lose 1. G2 Win 5, Lose 0
Obviously none of these match results are worth anything for statistical data. Mental misstep is pretty nuts against their protection. I drew well... Neato.
Mono U Merfolk:G1 Win 4, Lose 1. G2 win 3, Lose 2
G1 loss he Sower'd my Bob. Otherwise Jitte/bob got there.
G2's were kind of Llawon battles. The only thing of note here was lord count. It felt like a wash between his lords vs my lords + confidant+Jitte.Jitte being MD was nuts (surprise).
So misstep makes Standstill a much better card, and you people are talking about taking it out for...
...an out of color draw engine that costs life.
Srsly, can someone explain this to me?
"Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."
"Politicians are like diapers. They should be changed often and for the same reason."
"Governing is too important to be left to people as silly as politicians."
"Politicians were mostly people who'd had too little morals and ethics to stay lawyers."
How do I rate threads? I like the 1-star on this thread and would like to give it a 1-star if I can figure out how to rate threads.

Good job on the recent performances Merfolks :)
Decks that I care about:
Steel Stompy
UWx Landstill
Dreadstalker
DDFT (10% practice)
Mangara on MWS? You must be masochistic. -kiblast
Have you tested it? I'm testing it because I have been having trouble against Dark Confidant's. They start off with hymn and lead into confidant destroying my tempo. I think standstill is equal against zoo, bad. If you have T1 Vial + MM + T2 Standstill on the play, Standstill just became amazing. Besides that, isn't it like MD standstill pre NPH? I'll be completely honest and say that I've only played Merfolk in 2 60'ish player events. I played the saitou black splash before in smaller events for perish/E. plague. It seemed fine then. I just feel that the meta is going to flood with Merfolk and was looking for MD trumps. (maybe it's just jitte?) I think it's better then standstill in the mirror which is why I went forward with testing it. Standstill is definitely the nuts against combo. I don't think Combo is a terror match up though. I apoligize if people think the idea is bad. I'd rather share my small testing with it and have it dismissed on the forum then to leave it an open question. Saves others from testing.
