r1 bye
r2 u/w standstill: g1: he shows me a tundra while shuffling so I choose to draw. I ddd for 4-5 turns just building up an army and never casting a spell, and then when he taps low for shackles, I probe him, he missteps, I probe him he missteps, i go land therapy, he lets it resolve, i nab his forces, see has has no more counterspells, and DR Primus, + therapy again to kill his shackles + a land, leaving him dead next turn to my army with no action.
g2: Expecting peacekeeper i sided in elesh norn. He keeps a hand with moat, EE and peacekeeper and no counters, He cant interact and thinks his perms are going to save him, primus for the moat, and forcing him to use EE and, elesh norn to kill peacekeeper and swing with some huge zombies.
r3: Lands with painter/stone. g1 I have a pretty explosive draw with Coliseum But by turn 3 he has Painter + grindstone + 3(tapped lands). I primus his grindstone, then therapy him killing his academy ruins, seeing that he has tabernacle in hand. He plays tabernacle, and draws living wish for glacial casm. I save my narcomoeba with my city of brass, and let woodfall primus and all my zombies die, Dread return primus killing tabernacle and pass with a like 12 zombies and a primus + ichorids in yard. He has no play except casm, go. I sac primus to therapy him, killing casm and swing at him for 20+.
g2:. Basically the same thing happens except he has EE and mazeinstead of tabernacle and casm I brought in the 3rd dread return so i had more options, but my draw wasnt as explosive. Primus took it home anyway.
r4:elves G1 i mulled to 5 on the draw, had a slow but fine pimp+thug hand, He went off t3 and had lethal coming at me t4 after i whiffed on my first 2 dredges.
g2: He plays a bunch of dudes, I firestorm him for his entire board, save an elvish visionary. Then I Iona green the next turn.
g3: he is land light and cant go off til turn 4, Im able to get down iona on green but his board is huge, and he is drawing to hardcast emrakul, Im able to get elesh norn out before he can draw emrakul and he loses.
r5: U/R/W stoneforge/lavamancer/jace type thing: Choose to draw since this is a "known" player and has a rep for playing control decks. g1: He has lavamancer + SOF&I. I primus his sword and white source, therapy his hand away and run him over.
g2: he mulligans, has no 2nd land and dies real fast.
r6: u/w standstill: I know the guy and know what he is playing so i choose to draw. G1 i just DDD and he cant beat it because thats just how the matchup goes.
g2: he gets down peacekeeper early, I therapy him hoping to nab his countermagic and return elesh norn for the win the following turn, instead I see wrath of god, so i have to dread return iona on white instead, and get elesh norn the following turn. I fade whatever outs he has and win.
r7: merfolk with maindeck SOF&I g1: I have a really nutty draw, multiple outlets, into multiple probes, into LED+Breakthrough, He concedes when he has no permanents in play and I have 26 power on the board on turn 3.
g2: he tanks hard on his 7 and keeps, I have 2xpimp, bridge, 2x needle, rainbow land, firestorm on the draw. I figure that his tanking had either means that he has no pressure or no counterspells. either way this hand is good against that. Turns out he has no pressure, but missteps my first imp and wastes me, I draw another land, and he dazes my 2nd imp. I try a needle and he missteps while beating down with mutavault. I resolve the 2nd neeedle and name mutavault figuring that there is no way he sandbagged relic for 5 turns. Obviously he plays relic(by this time I have a dredger in hand) I therapy him for lord of atlantis(he has no double blue) and instead see coralhelm+ surgical extraction(!). He plays coralhelm. Next turn I therapy him forcing him to use the extraction when my yard is land, pimp, therapy and nothing, no bridges no dredger.(he still has relic this whole time)he extractions pimp(!) I guess since I had no outlet and I would still have a therapy(the one on the stack) but it still seems wrong. he beats me down with coralhelm, and doesn't level so he can keep up relic activation mana(I guess). I draw a 2nd land, play it and pass. When he goes to level on his turn i firestorm away his coralhelm discarding Ichorid + my first dredger of the game, a thug. He passes back, I dredge 4 and hit another thug. I play the first thug and pass. he just passes back. I make a big show of going to my drawstep prompting him to use relic at the wrong time, He does. I rip breakthrough off the top and breakthrough for 1, he tries to misstep it, but it costs 2. I breakthrough into coliseum which I keep + grave troll which goes to the yard. By this time im at 5 life. I hold the coliseum to avoid wasteland and pass back. He draws and plays reejery. I play coliseum and pop it, getting a narco and some bridges, I therapy him for the misstep i know he has and get some tokens. He plays a LOA and passes back. I get back ichorids, and DR elesh norn for the win. This was a strange game.
r8: Goblins. g1: I keep on the draw, t1 discard grave troll t2 dredge, hitting stinkweed. he played t1 lackey, t2 lackey for ringleader then warren instigator so i have to go for it to not die + I know he has gempalm and warren weirding from the ringleader. The stinkweed dredge misses another dredger and I die. no action in my top 20 cards, this happens sometimes.
g2 he has has leyline and lackey into piledriver, play piledriver. shrug.
r9: u/w stoneforge standstill. I know the guy and he plays blue decks so i draw. g1: My draw is slow and my dredges are below expectation and i eventually just die to his batterskull + multiple plows.
g2: Again he has batterskull but i keep the game under control till i can find primus. Still this game take forever because of lifelink and him asking the jusge a question and then us not netting a time extension.
g3: I'm paired down this round , im X-1 and he is X-1-1 On turn 5 of turns he has no nonland perms, a hand of misty rainforest, and is facing down Ional on blue + woodfall. I cant do quite lethal to him(thanks batterskull!) Obviously he refuses to scoop even after i inform him that there is no possible way that X-1-2 makes day2. He wont hear it and I don't have much time to convince him since there are actual 4 judges watching the match who don't care about the fact that im getting fucked over and just want to go home or play EDH or whatever they do. So we draw and he obviously does not make day 2.
r10: U/W standstill. Since im in the draw bracket I just choose to draw, gotta stay on theme. He is u/w standstill and g1 is a joke. We both cast nothing and he just dies to ichorids + zombies.
g2: he chooses to draw(that in itself is a win) and has tons of countermagic for my early action + plow for my first ichorid. He gets out jace + crucible drawing an actual 3 cards per turn every turn foir like 8-10 turns, while I just dredge and pass. He sticks 2 peacekeepers, and i try and figure out how im going to win the game. After im able to therapy all his countermagic I have to primus away his shackles and his jace then pass, he brainstorms a bunch and passes back with me having 5 cards left in library including 2 remaining dread returns and a therapy. i dredge 4, hitting the 2 dread returns, meaning i know my last card is is therapy. Luckily i have been sandbagging a land since t1 for just this occasion. with just therapy left in my library, I use my last therapy out of the yard, which he missteps, then go for dread return on iona, which gives me 12 zombies. He counterspells it, leaving him with just 2 peacekeepers and 3 cards in hand and me with 12 zombies. I pass back, he upkeeps his peacekeepers and passes back. he has 2 forces in yard and 1 RFG(from the very early game) so i go land therapy naming counterspell, he shows me the last force, i flashback the therapy on force then dread return elesh norn and attack him with 10 4/4's with 0 cards left in my library.
r11: u/w stoneforge and ancestral visions. g1: I choose to draw(or maybe just lose the roll this round, dont remember) knowing he is playing control since he is a name player. he suspends an ancestral visions on turns 1,2 and 3, I miss on my first few dredges, he plows all 3 of my ichorids(not that this was unexpected i mean he did draw 9 extra cards) and sticks a jace. I die.
g2: I keep a slow hand and start DDDing, he goes t2 stoneforge t3 stoneforge in batterskull, turn 4 stoneforge in baatterskull and i just die, again whiffing pretty hard on my dredges.
r12: u/w stoneforge with standstill. g1 He has t2 stoneforge for sword of war and peace(!) while I am on the DDD plan and cant find any action, he hits me for 10 twice and i die on turn 6.
g2 i have a more aggressive LED hand and am able to run him over pretty quickly.
g3: Basically the same as g2
r13: Merfolk with stoneforge. g1 I beat him in a typical merfolk g1 where i just build a bigger board with ichorid and bridges and don't expose my bridges to cursecatcher until im ready to kill him.
g2: my one regret, I keep a really loose hand because it has double firestorm and do nothing and lose.
g3: he stoneforges up moartarpod(!) holy crap that card is good vs dredge, i get destroyed.
r14: Merfolk with stoneforge. This is the friend of my last round opponent playing the same deck. g1 he actual mulls to 4 and just loses.
g2 he mulls to 6 keeps a hand with no colored mana(he had moartarpod) and just loses.
r15: u/w/r stoneforge with magus of the moon. g1: I get dredging a bunch with probe and have coliseum next turn to finish him off but he sticks magus of the moon which slows the game down a bunch. eventually i slow dredge a bunch to find primus to kill his jace + white source and has to chump away his board and dies.
g2: before sideboarding he like mutters under his breath that he lost to dredge earlier even though he had tormods and surgical extraction. I pretend like i didn't hear him and ask him to repeat what he just said, he does, so its obvious that he has nothing. This is a terrible bluff(mindgame whatever you want to call it) and it totally backfired on him, i would have played more scared FOR SURE if he just said nothing but the fact that i got him to awkwardly repeat the hate cards meant that he had actual nothing. My suspicions were confirmed when he played ethersworn cannonist(lol) on turn 2. I was able to firestorm it discarding a grave troll, but he missteped the firestorm. I dredged 6 and played another land. He attacked with cannonist and a factory. I firestormed them both and it resolved. From there i dredged a bunch, and played and activated a coliseum to lock it up. He was pretty tilted and one draw step i dredged thug instead of troll so that i could cast it(so i would have enough guys to DR + rebuy my narcomoeba flip) he cliques me draw step, and puts thug on the bottom, I shrug and just dredge back another thug from the clique draw, and it was very over since he was so mentally out of the game at that point, also he was a dick to me and writes for starcity, so if you are so inclined you could figure out who this person is.
anyway i finished 28th with 11-3-1 so i won 400 and had a pretty good time. The deck felt perfect, every card was used and things generally played out the way I had drawn them up when i was brewing this list, although I think I just want to find a place for the 4th pithing needle in the board(or perhaps main, gogo sun titan.)
edit: and grats to our hotel room, especially reid and Ian who made t8 and 32 respectively.
Awesome list and report! I love some of your card choices, first of Probe over Carefull study. This allows you to dredge on a DDD turn when you dont want to play a land or dont have one.
I also like the inclusion of sun titan, i seriously never thought of him. I always used witness ^^.
Could you maybe tell us how you sideboarded in the different matches? How was the 4th ichorid in the board for you?
Congrats on the finish again!
I narrowly missed the top 8 of Grand Prix Providence on tiebreakers, finishing in 9th place out of nearly 1200 entrants. Qualifying for the pro tour is pretty awesome, especially because I usually only get to play in a few large events a year because of school.

My list is the same as Richard Feldman's except for the darkblast in the main and 2 ancient grudges in the sideboard. Overall, I liked the sideboarding plan of making the deck better postboard instead of diluting it with reactive answers to hate. Common sideboarding was along the lines of -4 breakthrough, -1 cabal therapy, +3 firestorm, +1 ichorid, +1 Elesh Norn/Angel/Ancient Grudge.

A big Congrats on the finish 2nd_Lawl! You have Sun Titan main, but did it actually got used? I can't find anything about that in your report. And concerning the titan: did you ever wished it was another creature? And if so, wich one would you have liked best? I really like your list and will be playing it the next tournament I participate.
And a small question on the SB. Ever regretted the Leylines? Since in our meta there are huge amounts of Leyline of the void rampant, I'n inclined to switch them for Claims.
Congratz to the finish, I think I saw you in the coverage of the GP.
One question occurs when I go through your list: How you deal with Leyline of the Void and a enough balanced sb-plan for dredge from your opponents?
As far as I know (and looked by myself through a lot of top16 decklists) GY-hate is totally underestimated in America, but only 2 Ancient Grudge seems so few to me... .
Maybe you could point out what h8 you faced and how the sb dealt with it, because I know that I would got my ass whooped when I would bring such a board to a tourney.
I just remenber the game you played against NO-Rug in one of the last rounds and this was a cakewalk (I think youll have to admit that). I am really looking forward to get to know how the sb turned out out against particular hate and what youve faced.
Congratz again, sad that you missed it!
PS: I dont want to step on anyones toes but I would ALWAYS play Dredge if I would play in America and go bonkers through nearly as half as much hate as I have ever played through in a tourney. It seems that 2 Relics in many lists are the extend to dealwith dredge, which is just ridicolous; seems that everyone there thinks that Dredge is still destroying itself due to mulligans into obvlivion playing LEDS... .
In response...Hypothek!
Yeah, I get the same problem here in Belgium. Everybody plays at least 6 GY hate and usually that is a split between Crypt and relic. And now it seems like evrybody is playing 4 LotV on top of that!
Yea it was used in alot of the games to dredge me more especially in game 1's (think of sun titan as a replacement for sphinx) i didn't bother giving the play by play for games unless something interesting happened. While sphinx is a blunt instrument that does one thing very well, Sun titan does most of what sphinx does in terms of dredging you more, while at the same time giving you a million other options, and is actually a big threat *in play* as opposed to sphinx.
I didn't board in leyline of sanctity except against the painter/lands deck, but that had more to do with the fact that i played against almost all U/W and fish. All around me all day there were decks that i would ave boarded leyline against: Junk, Painter/stone, ANT, burn etc. At SCG boston(where i also top32'd /sickbrag)I sided it in almost every match and it was incredible. If people are seriously just playing leyline of the void in more than 5% of the decks, I just wouldn't play dredge at all.
GJ dedicateddan, any chance for a tournament report?
I'm a bit exhausted to write a tournament report in the immediate future.
Here are some questions that I answered on the mtgsalvation forum. Much of the discussion on the thread had been about dread return targets, so I try to emphasize the importance of zombie beatdown.
http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showt...307947&page=37
Also, Leyline of the Void only came up once or twice in testing and never at the Grand Prix. If Leyline is widely played, dredge gets worse and we're forced to play reactive cards to sometimes deal with it. The GP metagame didn't pack much hate and there was probably an average of 1-1.5 Tormod's Crypt type cards in sideboards of decks I saw/faced.
I read your comments in that thread and i agree with you about the strategy vs the misstep decks especially. However I disagree vehemently about not having at LEAST woodfall primus or angel of despair main. There is no reason that you should give up game 1 against Lands, Enchantress, or any deck with moat just because you couldn't find room for 1 card in your 60. I agree that FKZ is a win-more and that a jillion zombies is going to be good enough against basically everything: until they play glacial casm or solitary confinement and you are drawing dead. primus has such good synergy with the deck and solves all of the really annoying cards in the format (except peacekeeper, but that's why i was sideboarding elesh norn in against every u/w standstill opponent) I also lost to drew and he beat me the same way he beat you: by just countering or plowing everything, asap game 1 and then getting aggro with stoneforge g2.
edit: Also if you dont feel favored against merfolk, that to me is enough of a reason to play LED: I tested more against fish then anything else and found it favorable in g1 and favorable in g2/3 as long as they had fewer than 4 real hate cards(dismember does not count). Gitaxian probe is VERY good in the fish matchup, either baiting their misstep or ensuring that your first therapy hits, which should slow them down an entire turn, Most importantly though is that it does not force you to expose yourself to wasteland until you are ready to cast something that you know will resolve. On the draw, discard go, dredge, probe is very powerful(especially if you hit another dredger on your first dredge) if they bite and misstep it, you can go land and slam breakthrough. If they don't have the counter, you know for sure you are safe and you can slam breakthrough, if they let it resolve and have daze or whatever you can either wait and play around it (assuming they have no waste in hand) or play through daze if you have more action. if all you were going to do with your turn was DDD anyway then gitaxian probe is just the best timewalk ever.
Congrats. We definitely had quite a few dredge players day 2. I finished 29th after drawing the 15th round (11-3-1) as it was unlikely I would make top 16 with a win and top 32 was locked in by a draw. Round 14 I had dredge players sitting to the right and left of me, was a pretty funny sight.
Also, getting my foily Ichorids altered by rk post on site was awesome. Pics in the altered art thread.
awesome
I hadn't come across much/any mainboard moats or other problematic lock permanents in testing and I didn't run into any at the GP. If you expect a substantial number of these, then playing a MD answer seems good. MD darkblast also helps us not scoop to peacekeeper.
Interesting sideboard plan. Against merfolk, I boarded:
+4 Firestorm
+1 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
+1 Ichorid
-4 Breakthrough
-2 Cabal Therapy
Perhaps leaving breakthrough in would give us a chance to overpower them?
vs fish I was siding out LED/Deep Analysis/Sun titan/primus /1x breakthrough for 3xfirestorm, 3xneedle, ichorid, Iona, elesh norn.
I understand why people side out 4 Breakthrough... But have you guys tried not siding them out completely? I've won countless post-Sb games when I go:
Me: Tireless Tribe
Them: Crypt
Me: discard Grudge, cast it on Crypt, discard dredger, Breakthrough FtW
To board in 4 cards, I usually take out 1 DR target, 1 Thug, 1 Ichorid, and 1 Careful Study.
The Source: Your Source for "The Source: Your Source for..." cliche.
Don't you guys consider siding out DR against Merfolk?
Of course an resolved Elesh Norn wins this match, but can we actually resolve DR?
According to the DDD plan, wouldn't the 4th Ichorid be often better than a DR target?
Congratz for the amazing results.
I played the same 75 that I did at the Boston scg open - link. I'll try and get some sort of meaningful report together if people are interested. I actually don't have my notes from the first half of the tourney since I met up with cdr and he gave me a Source scorepad, then I stupidly threw away my sheets from the previous rounds XD.Mind posting a list and a report :D?
awesome
