swords of x and y and painters servent

If I name a color with painter that the sword gives protection from does it make the sword fall off of creatures. example, I name red, would it make sword of fire and ice fall off an equipped creature?

Yes. Protection from x means that the permanent can't have things with quality x attached to it. You can still equip the sword but it will fall off before any player receives priority.
