As much as I really like the design of Vexing Devil (especially for Burn), I agree that such a narrowly-useful card shouldn't be as heavily-priced as it is right now. This card is being over-hyped as we speak. Having said that, the retailers aren't the only ones to blame, as the players are largely responsible for the hype that goes around.

I'm as open minded to exploring new cards as anyone, but this thing has no chance in Burn. Even if he was good, or even great, how is burn going to protect a Planewalker that comes into play with 2 counters? Are we going to keep creatures back to protect it? We would have to because almost anything could kill it and there goes our investment of a turn.

And the "random" part in the +1 makes it useless in Burn to start with.

I'm sure someone can find a use for it somewhere but its not going to be in Burn. The very nature of Planeswalker leads me to think there will never be one printed that is worth putting in Burn.

Then again, any card with Miracle is bound to induce inconsistencies without the proper supporting cast.

Ignoring all other possible issues, it's just too expensive. I would need 3 mana to make it into a counterable Volcanic, 4 to make it into a Flamebreak.

It's going to be a great card for Standard. RDW decks are going to love it. Remember, a lot of creatures that are good in Legacy tend to be good in Standard as well.

Definitely not worth playing in burn, but hot damn is that some cool art.

Yeah... and the worse part about it is that you have to have the mana to pay the Miracle cost, and also draw into the Miracle at exactly the right time to make sense of the card. Besides, you're not running any creatures anyway, so why bother with something that tries to be a one-sided board-sweeper.

Yeah, I guess so... so does that mean that it will be futile to wait for the price to go down before getting a full set? hehe

Hey Roguebuild: just saw this posted on the Avacyn Restored card dicussion thread, may be relevant to you. I thought I saw that you were running Earthquake. If instead you were to run Rolling Earthquake it would be strictly better. Same casting cost but it hits flying creatures as well.

Standard players will realize soon , that the devil isnt for T2 competitive , the players will take 100% of the time 4 damage , and they dont have the reach of our spells like pop, fire blast , ok they dont even have lighting bolt...they only have shock and incinerate... so for me the devil is an eternal card not t2 playable..

I'm not actively aware of the Standard meta game, but this is also my expectation - unless something else gets printed in the yet unspoiled cards from Avacyn, which, in fact, would be more good news for us.

The decks listed in a certain category on this website really have no bearing on the current Metagame, as Nic Fit is not even a deck anymore and blue based combo (Hivemind, High Tide & Dream Halls) is out in numbers. Sneak Attack is listed in DTB & that deck is a pile that spends the entire early game assembling their combo, playing their combo & then still not winning after doing both. Yet Dredge is somehow not good enough, even after getting Faithless Looting & putting up pretty damn good results.

Maybe the DTB section just doesn't count SCG tournaments or something, but there's a fairly big Legacy tournament every single Sunday and these forums don't seem to keep up with the weekly Metagame.
This isn't really the place for this discussion, but I want to address this point.

Very close to half of this website's traffic comes from Europe. That means we're just as responsible for including Europe's metagame results as we are for including SCG's.

This isn't Your Source for American Legacy. It's Your Source for Endless Bickering About Banning Brainstorm. No, wait.

But seriously, it's important to us that we're inclusive. The decks in the DTB forum are performing consistently somewhere. It might just not be North America. The alternative would be to have separate DTB forums for different geographic locations, but I suspect that could become incredibly cumbersome to maintain and confusing to navigate.

For example, if RUG Tempo is doing well in both America and Europe, do we have two separate threads for it in each DTB forum? That obviously doesn't make sense.

In any case, be aware that the mod staff is aware of your point and are not deaf to it. We'll discuss it and and see what we think.

I don't want to derail this thread any further. If anyone wants to respond to continue this discussion, they can start a thread for it in the Community Forum or PM a mod about it. Thanks.

Just noticed Burn is no longer a DTB...

    Saw that coming.

Now we can go back to being the red-headed stepchild every ignores and take our victories a few at a time and try not to get noticed.

That's fine. That never changed my love for burn.

Maybe it will make some of the elitists go away as well, resulting in more constructive discussion.

    Re: [Deck] Burn

    Burn is a great deck.
I cant say this deck is bad because i went Top 8 Yesterday on a 128player Turnament.

But there is something bothering me. The Top 8 has to play against each other again after the Tournament is over. So i had to play vs the best of the best.
Problem is they dont make that many mistakes and the less mistakes people do the less effective is Burn. I got a good matchup in my first and only game vs Maverick but he just outplayed my deck.
Maybe iam just not good enought but i think Burn doesent have the consistency like other Top decks have and you end up never ever getting top 3 with it.
If you look at recend tournaments its more likely for Burn getting Top 8 - Top 16 then top4.
In my opinion for a Deck beeing DTB you should always have a good chance to play top 4 with it and not only "lucking" into top 16 to top8
    regards

Burn won two consecutive SCG Opens. Theoretically if you can make it to top 8 you can win it.

I would have to agree. I don't believe that Chandra's Phoenix belongs in burn. It is too slow and not enough damage for the mana you invest in it. Although it makes me want to try some sort of deck that uses it along with firestorm. But even with that idea, I think it is still subpar.
Chandra's Phoenix is not "too slow" if we are comparing it against Sulfuric Vortex.

    Chandra's Phoenix:

    - Deals two damage right away instead of waiting for the opponents upkeep.
    - More resilient to removal compared to Vortex. Requires a swords to remove, which means one less swords for your Guides or Devils. Bolts and blockers won't stop it forever.
    - Doesn't deal damage to you, making it better against other aggro decks looking to race you.

Both cards kill at about the same speed. The Phoenix is better against blind matches compared to Vortex. If you were considering main-decking Vortex, put that may birds in it's place and put the Vortexes in the side board.

Not that great for burn considering we lack good library manipulation. Having it in our opening seven is pretty bad. We also run very few lands to begin with so we likely can't burn the same turn we cast it.

Maybe a good tool for U/R burn?

I have no issue with Chandra's Phoenix but your discounting of the importance of preventing life gain. Most of the decks that can gain life have the ability MD, that is the biggest reason for running Vortex MD. Also, you only need to cast Vortex once.

Having the same issue with being bad in your opening draw, you don't want to draw it until you are at or near top-deck mode. Getting it on T2, pitching your hand for 7 new cards only works out if you had a crap hand full of lands or had to mull down to 5 or less. Otherwise the window in which it would be useful is really small, basically turns 4+. Before that it will just slow you down.
