I'm still mad at Merfolk for sucking after MMs was banned. It was the first tier legacy deck I built after months of saving and collecting, then bam! misstep gets banned.

Seriously, I've played against a lot of Merfolk with a few different decks. Every time the maindeck Chalice builds are the ones that fuck me up. It shuts down removal for Lords, shuts down one drops, cantrips, and is quite good against decks like:
Reanimator: no cantrips, no Reanimate, no Entomb. No discard. No Spell Pierce.
RUG/UR Tempo: Most of their deck. Cantrips, they play mostly one drops.
BUG Tempo: They play a heavier discard suite, usually 7, and it shuts off Spell Pierce, cantrips, Goose, Delver, etc.
    Storm combo: Ritual acceleration.
Dredge(?): Counters their draw spells all of which have 1cc. Counters Cabal Therapies, forces them to slow roll you.

It also shuts off common red post-board hate which Merfolk can encounter such as REB and Pyroblast, which basically one shots your Lords.

Also, if you draw a 2nd one, you can try to get it X on 2 considering you have Cavern of Souls to bypass countering your own lords at 2cc, and have Vial, etc.

Seems pretty good if Merfolk is to make a comeback. I think its much stronger than Standstill; why draw 3 cards and replenish your resources when you can better protect the resource you already have?
Luck is a residue of design.

This card will be around the 7-10 dollar range since many many people need to upgrade their merfolk deck in legacy.

Then there is the need for a merfolk deck in modern.

I think it will be closer to 10 dolllars than 7

    Re: [Deck] Merfolk

    $10 is ridiculous.

Commander was never more than a $3 card on TCGPlayer. And is down to $1.50 right now.

This guy will surely be more popular, but I can't see it being higher than $5 in the next few months, then it will drop like cards always do unless they see Standard play.

Edit: Right now they're $3.99 on SCG for Pre Order...

    Re: [Deck] Merfolk

I agree with vacrix. The only counter I can think of is that the combination of augur, adept, and image could generate enough card advantage that the protection from chalice wouldn't be needed. This is all conjecture though. I haven't tested the combination of the three yet. Again, right now I do think chalice is needed, but that may change come when m13 is released.

And it's sold out... A lot of people were buying it on Ebay with the $20 B.I.N price and it sold like hot cakes. It will stay within the $4-6 range.

I think I'll try out the Cavern + Vial + CotV. Hope I can make room for all 3.

I am looking forward to making sushi out of this deck. It still has no good way to beat Mother of Runes + Umezawa's Jitte.

How about playing with a black splash for perish and virtue's ruin? Mono U builds really have a hard time beating Maverick in my experience.

Hmm, apparently, this is a Food Cycle. Your deck eats Fish and pretty much dies when facing off a big Spaghetti. And those Fish usually can stand and eat some spicy Demons.
Let your Dredge 6 be: Narco, Narco, Narco, Bridge, Bridge, Dread Return

With 8 Lords that provide islandwalk now, how about Spreading Seas somewhere in the 75? Maverick won't be able to race us in most situations if we give them an island and can't block our creatures.

8 islandwalk lords + some islandwalk enablers (Aquitect's Will, Tidal Warrior) + your own Jitte might work, though.

Dungrove Elder is a rare from M12. It sees decent play in a much, much larger format. It is $3. You're crazy if you think this will be more than $5 a month after M13 is released.

    Amateur speculation.

Edit: For the ~$10 price estimations.

Yea. If anything it will just replace Lord of Atlantis as a better 2CMC lord.

8(12?) lord of atlantis sounds better
