Thread: [DTB] Blade Control

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

Hello guys, i've been reading this thread looking for some advice on stoneblade decklists, playstyle and so.. and i want to take myself one step further playing a nice event this weekend at my local store. This kind of format doesn't draw too much attention in my area, which is perfect for people around my homelands, 'cause they can usually claim the price (in this case, big time Ravnica box's.. but i'm ok with just credits :B).

I want your help, as little as i can offer in return, to take this one down. Much of what's beeing discussed here has been drawing my attention, but i really feel that the perfect enhancement is going to be the right feedback on:

    1- MB tunings
    2- Meta & SB

    Nowadays i'm playing Emanuele Marcotti GPs list, with little- to-no changes;

    4 Snapcaster Mage
    4 Stoneforge Mystic
    2 Vendilion Clique

    3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

    1 Batterskull
    4 Brainstorm
    1 Engineered Explosives
    3 Force of Will
    1 Inquisition of Kozilek
    2 Lingering Souls
    1 Sensei's Divining Top
    3 Spell Pierce
    4 Swords to Plowshares
    3 Thoughtseize
    1 Umezawa's Jitte
    1 Supreme Veredict

    4 Flooded Strand
    2 Island
    2 Karakas
    2 Marsh Flats
    1 Plains
    3 Polluted Delta
    1 Scrubland
    1 Swamp
    3 Tundra
    3 Underground Sea

I've always said that the more important cards in my deck are 15, but i want to build that along the way for this particular event, once i've settled a solid MB.

Event is 6 days away; hoping to get some eye-catch, i salute you.

ps: recently, i re-read Ben Friedman's STF vs RUG article to get some inspiration, what do you think about it?

Solid list there. Mine is almost the same as yours except I am playing 3 Snapcasters for one MB vindicate, 2 spell pierces with 1 counterspell, a 2-2 IOk thoughtseize split and 1 Karakas for academy ruins which is awesome in recurring E.E and our equipments. What is your sideboard like?

Hello guys, what do you think of goblin MU with esperblade? Is it unfavorable so that we should bring some engineered plague SB? My list already have 2 EE's to take care of pesky siege gang's token. And what SB card is good to fight RUG delver other than perish and supreme verdict? Thanks

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

Well, I like Rest in Peace against RUG, since it really shuts them down pretty hard, while being amazing graveyard hate elsewhere. Yes you lose some power on Snapcaster, but there are a few solutions. First, you can board them out. However, I don't think you even have to if you don't want to because if rest in peace resolves you're in a good position against RUG. If it doesn't, then snapcasters still remain useful.

Also, Goblins can be pretty rough, so I would recommend extra hate if you expect Goblins. Goblins tend to prey on slower more control-oriented decks because they have a strong aggro plan backed up with mana denial and card advantage. Having equipment definitely helps a lot, although it's not a cure-all for the matchup, as many miracle lists with SFM still struggle. I like engineered plague quite a bit for this matchup, but I also like it for it's ability to target humans in the Maverick match as well, hitting Mother of Runes, Noble Hiearch, Thalia, and Knight of the Reliquary.

Thanks for the insight, guys. So I guess, I was right about goblin MU not being favorable. Which card do you think more powerful against goblin, supreme verdict or Engineered plague? I lean toward supreme more cause its a more general creature sweeper compared to engineered plague.

i'ld say plague, since it's less mana intensive.. the thing is not to get greedy and fetch for scrubland, as wasteland/port might own that line.

like you, i'm now -1 on Snaps, and splitting IoK-TS. I don't have a SB yet: mine is from a previous tournament and i haven't been able to re-build it, as other decks were relevant and now i'm against the following:
    BG NicFit

    Goblins

    High Tide

    Reanimator

    Maverik

    RUG

    Ominscience

    AND MIRROR!

and i feel like i need advise on all fifteeen cards! im on to win this!!

what about you actually start by looking at what you are taking out in each matchups first before trying to cram in cards? That's usually a good place to start if you don't know what to put in your sideboard and don't want to copy a sideboard without understanding why each card is in there... now what you want is probably something like that :

    Goblins: sweepers

    High Tide : disruption, countermagic

    Reanimator : grave hate, countermagic

Maverik : sweepers, creature removal, some enchantment hate, probably something they can't awnser

RUG : creature removal, sweepers and probably something they just can't awnser

Ominscience : same as high tide

AND MIRROR! : sweepers, counermagic, diruption, and maybe something they can't deal with, and artifact hate

Yeah, I find the best way to sideboard is to have a very specific plan for every match-up with a lot of overlaps. When I play against Show and Tell I better have at least the amount of cards i'm taking out to put in.

So I have a question. How is Vindicate these days in the deck? It seems alright, if only just a little underpowered with decks like Show and Tell existing. Also, how does everyone feel the Zombies match-up is? I've been testing the match-up and it doesn't seem terrible, but certainly not good. Personally i'd say we're unfavored, but only slightly. Does that sound right, or am I doing it wrong?

I've come to the conclusion that cutting black for basics, Supremer Verdict, and a small red splash is preferably to Esperbade.

Supreme Verdict is better against the current meta and your toughest matchups (RUG, Gobos, Merfolk,) the the black splash, and REB is better then discard against Miracles since the match is really about Jace. You really need 6 basics to make Verdict a consistent proposition.

Your combo match weakens, in particularly Storm, but who's playing that now anyway? What you lose against show n tell you make up for in the other matches.
Calls for banning are almost always the scrubs way out. Real men view a challenge as something to overcome, a puzzle to solve, an opportunity to be had, and the source of evolution.

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

RUG is a tough matchup, but not unbeatable. Engineered Explosives is one of the best cards in that matchup. Goblin MU is bad, but a turn 2 Stoneforge or Snap + Swords to Plowshares can slow them down enough to pace.

Hand discard is incredible in almost every matchup, especially in the mirror and Miracles. I couldn't see myself ever cutting the hand discards. Combo such as Omniscience is very rampant in most organized tournaments at least in some numbers. Not having discard game 1 means you will have a greater chance of defeat. I could get behind a UWr Stoneblade deck with a couple of Restoration Angels and a Venser teched, maybe even Vendalken Shackles. But the format may be too fast for that. I have a copy of Supreme Verdict in the sideboard. Supreme Verdict is not very realistic against RUG since they have Stifles and Wastelands and may be able to kill you before turn 4 even. Cards like Engineered Explosives are more cost efficient, and with hand discard, you can strip them of their Stifles to ensure the EEs will go off.

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

Talking about RUG matchup, I would agree that it is quite hard. and I agree that EE is the best card for this MU. I want to know what you guys think of relic of progenitus / Tormod's / nihil against RUG. do these gravehate gets sided in ever?

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

As poster above wrote, bring in Rest in Peace against RUG - its really bad for them.

Rest In Peace nomboes with Snapcaster though, and stops you from using Academy Ruins to recur artifacts. If your plan is to keep RUG from growing Mongooses / Tarmogoyfs, Relic Of Progenitus is IMO a better bet. You can even tutor it with Trinket Mage, if you play one maindeck.

    Re: [DTB] Blade Control

All those are one-shots that can be stifled. RiP does interfere with Snapcaster, but when RiP is out, Snapcaster simply becomes a body that can attack for 2 or block their Mongoose. And if RiP is not out, Snapcaster retains its main function. Its a win-win for us IMO. But yes, it makes Academy Ruins useless. On the other hand I don't see much value in Academy Ruins vs RUG's 4 Wastelands.

Better Ruins than Tundra.. also, EE, Lingering and Snapcaster can buy time until Verdict shows up. If RIP is out, those 3 cards become average where they could have been great.
