We are looking to buy a home in Seattle and move sometime in the next 2 years. How is the Legacy scene?
I would figure Magic is pretty hot in the area since Renton is right there, but is it all standard and modern or is there a strong Legacy scene.

A recent Legacy event an hour north just had 95 players. The Legacy scene is awesome and still growing.
The Renton area Legacy scene is barely a thing. My crew of 4 are probably the most consistent players at the main Renton shop, Shane's Big League Sports Cards and for a long time we could barely get events to fire. The Modern scene is decent though. For legit Legacy competition you will have to drive into Seattle proper. We are also building up a small community (10-15 dudes) in the Bellevue area. Basically, if you don't mind a bit of a commute, there are great Legacy scenes around. But some people just wanna mosey on over after work and don't feel like traveling so the local communities can be somewhat slow to mingle. I drive and bus all over though so it's not a big deal for me.
The Renton scene has a lot of newer players. Like most things in life, you gotta go to a big city (Seattle) to find the real grinders.
Currently the closest legacy is 74 miles.
part of the choices that we are making is I am finishing up my Bachelors in Education currently and am looking to go back afterwards and get my Ph. D. In Computer Science / Engineering. I want to teach middle school so I do not need my doctorate but it is for personal growth since I have a M. S. in Computer Science/Engineering.
We have always wanted to live in Washington state and Seattle/Tacoma areas just seem like a great place to raise our children. Too much bull living in Arkansas with all the hate and intolerance. I want to raise my kids in a place where they feel free to express themselves fully.

Oh wow. Well the most you will have to travel should be like half an hour to get to a good legacy scene. If you live *in* Seattle it's even easier.
As far as the people, Seattle is a very laid back place to live. This is one of the most liberal places in the country. I'm sure you know all that demographic stuff already though.
I just moved to Seattle! I'm looking forward to my first legacy tournament here tomorrow at Exalted games in Tacoma.

If you can make it, I highly recommend Card Kingdom on Mondays. This week will be larger than normal because there will be a special Labor Day event.
We are currently planing on a spring break date to come visit the area. I want to get to meet and speak with a few of the professors at the university and talk about some of my current work and maybe see whose ass I have to kiss while in a doctoral program.
I grew up in the San Francisco/Santa Cruz /San Jose area so it was a huge cultural shock moving here to Arkansas. It will be so nice to be able to just kick back on a sidewalk without someone looking at me like I am insane, or try to give me money thinking I am homeless (note I am 35 have not done that in about 15 years now LOL) I have been in the area now for 10 years and we both think it would do us good to move back into a higher cultured area.

Wow, there are a ton of stores doing legacy tournaments in the area! Actually, there are just a ton of stores. I'll definitely make it out to the Card Kingdom tournament, but now I'm not sure if I should go to Green Lake Games on Sunday or if I should go to Exalted Games. Green Lake is way closer, but it seemed like it didn't have good turnout. Do you know?

I've never been to Exalted Games, so I can't say anything about that.
Green Lake Games is a smaller shop that specializes in masters drafts (I believe on Tuesday). It isn't as nice a place as Card Kingdom, but I like the owner a lot and suggest you check it out.
The Sunday Legacy events at GLG don't have nearly the attendance of Mondays at CK, despite the more convenient starting time. For a while, it was getting under 8 people per week, since it's one of the stores to more recently pick up Legacy, but the last few times I was there, it was getting 10-12 people. This varies greatly depending on whether any stores are running larger events that weekend.
I approach it as an event to hang out with friends (if I'm available that evening) and to try out decks I wouldn't feel comfortable piloting cold at a larger event. If it helps, GLG tends to offer better than 100% of its entry take as store credit in an effort to grow the scene, and I believe if the event doesn't fire, you'll get a free booster.
Edit: Given the presence of PAX Prime at Seattle this weekend, some of the events may have lower attendance than normal. Don't be discouraged by this!
I'll be at the Monday Card Kingdom tournament rocking a Hulk tshirt and hurting people's feelings with Elves. Lordofthepit will be somewhere yelling at people and challenging them to "FIGHT ME!". Flag us down and give us a Source high five.
And yeah, PAX may be killing some local attendance. Most of the Seattle grinders will be at the Card Kingdom tourney though. It's starting right as PAX ends.

Attendance for us usually fluctuates between 8-12 as of late, but there haven't been any issues with having to cancel tournaments.
The competitive level of players is about 70-30. Some of the more competitive regulars play decks like OmniDerp, Miracles and Maverick. A few play their pet decks and a few of us just play whatever we feel like playing for the week since it's not super competitive. Its like lordofthepit said about hanging out with friends and trying new decks (Every so often a couple friends and I will play bad/outdated decks for fun - Leylines, Nourishing Lich and Trix were the decks we played last time).
I hit up Exalted when I can in Tacoma, south of Seattle by a bit of time. But it depends on a few real life things as I'm only able to come about half the time. I currently rotate between High Tide, Goblins, & Prison Stax. The deck I've probably played the most at Exalted lately is Stax. One day I might actually play Stax at an Open, it's a fun deck. Once the tourney ends, a few usually stay after, sometimes playing magic as late as 2 am or so, it's a very fun environment & Jen & Joe who run the place are very friendly, as well as just about everyone else.

I play solidarity and goblins just because I hate to win. Depending on what I sell before the move over the next 2 years I am going to start to build me a new deck if there is a decent legacy scene to make it worth the time and investment. I do have hulk flash someplace waiting on its unbanning :p

I moved to Seattle from the Philippines around 11 months ago and have only joined one Card Kingdom hosted event held over at Seattle Center. This thread just made me want to make the Monday legacy even a weekly thing
What time does the Monday night tournament usually start and ends?
6:30 pm (although usually if you get there a few minutes late, you're fine). right now we are planing on Emerald City Comic Con next year for our first visit up to look at houses and go to COMIC CON.
