It's not just the instants and sorceries it doesn't stop, although those are worth mentioning- not just Show and Tell, but Terminus, it's not astounding against say, Breakthrough; situations like a Wear/Tear with only your equipment as a legal target.

It also doesn't hit, y'know, artifacts, enchantments, creatures and planeswalkers the way Force of Will does.

No, it saps mana from the other guy and hijacks his spell. It's also doing something outside its colour. Fork for free is good, a upgraded and Red Misdirection is not.

It's not remotely outside of red's slice of the color wheel. Red has the ability to steal things temporarily. Would it be more obviously red if it said, "Gain control of target instant or sorcery until end of turn. It gains haste."?

It is a tactic by opponents of banning to avoid talking about banning, because they can just print shitty red cards instead and that'll fix the meta.

Todd Anderson and Pat Sullivan were discussing the banning of Brainstorm in passing just now in round 3 of SCG Atlanta. They seem to think it's probably ban-worthy but that the large amount of players dedicated to the format probably wouldn't support that decision.

I think that describes the situation pretty well. Beloved by many, yet still above the curve.

If people weren't attached at the hip to Brainstorm it would've been banned like four and a half years ago at the latest.

I'm not opposed to giving extra leeway to very popular cards- that's part of making the format more fun. I think it ought be applied more evenly- a lot of people really enjoyed Survival, for instance.

But Brainstorm is pretty clearly testing the limits of that rationale.

If you wanted, you could make it more like a mini Powerstone Minefield and have it when creatures attack or block. Either way, I doubt this card would completely destroy either of those strategies. They would adapt.

The original B/R poll is testament to how silly the majority of the cries for bans and restrictions are. Go ahead and update it with whatever ban the circlejerk is crying for and in 2-3 years, people will look at the closed poll and continue shake their head.
