[podcast] - Legacy Breakfast - Episode 22 - Legacy Staple - Swords to Plowshares

In this episode we do a bit of ‘housekeeping’ and catch up with people who have emailed in. We also have a look at the next in the long line of iconic legacy cards: Swords to Plowshares. We discuss its history, its uses relative to other types of removal, functional reprints and how different archetypes tend to use it.

I put this on last night and found it to be a bit of a ramble. You need some better answers than "it depends" on how to play cards...

I am yet to listen to the podcast, mostly because I'm sick and only get to write a post or two when I wake up, but I still got a (two) question(s): have you touched the fact that StP costs nothing even though it's arguably the very best one-mana removal in game, and do you think the price will grow up over the years? I find it a bit surprising that Swords hold the value and did not rise. Yep, they were a 1 dollar card, so the price definitely moved over the years, and they were printed in ABUR4 and Ice Age (not to mention the marginal prints), so it's not like there is some scarcity, but I'd still expect a bit higher price of such a card with such a demand and effect.

I think the answer to your question is right there in your post - Fourth Edition. After Land Tax and Sylvan Library Swords is one of the most expensive cards in Fourth Edition; StP is worth 5x most of the other uncommon cards in the set!

First of all, nice work on the podcast thus far. I enjoy all the legacy content I can get and I think you guys are hitting a nice blend of a casual yet knowledgable and humorous approach to the format.

I have a wish for a future podcast. One of you Stus seems well versed in combo decks, particularily storm. I love the combo part of the legacy meta and I would love it if you could dedicate an entire cast to discussing the different tier 1-1.5 combo strategies. Storm Combo, Show and Tell variants, Reanimator, Belcher etc. Their strengths, weaknessess and so on. Which combo deck would YOU bring to a large tournament and why :) Stuff like that.

Anyway. Keep up the excellent work!

    Hey Guys,
Good ep, I enjoyed it and thanks for the shout out at the start. In response to Stu's comment about living in paradise and shouldn't be inside listening to a podcast. I need something to listen to that 1 day a week when I'm driving to work (I bike the other 4) to earn the money that allows me to swim, run, cycle, kayak and race in this amazing country :)

    Cheers

PS: Yes NZ has penguins however most of them live down in the South Island where I grew up not up here in the North where I live now :)

Thanks for the feedback :) It never feels nice having to say that as we want to try and give definitive answers. Unfortunately, "it depends" is often the answer as there are so many factors to a play that need be considered. I can see how it's frustrating though, so we'll think about including scenarios that are more clear-cut. I do think that us discussing what "it depends" on, is probably more useful to the listener and if we aren't doing that, then we should be.

As for the rambling... yeah, we do that a lot...

    1) Yup :) it's in the podcast - for the reason the other commenter gave.

    2) Probably not. There are plenty of copies in circulation and not really much likelihood of a demand spike.

Thanks for the questions and get well soon!

Thanks for the comment! Out next episode (25?) is going to be an on-air brew. I can't guarantee it will be storm, but Stu T does have some inclinations that way...
    Stay-tuned is my advice!
