How much do discard effects hurt us? I understand our two main combo pieces are lands, but of they aren't in hand our enablers can be taken. I've seen some lists with Leyline of Sanctity in the side.

not really an issue. the worst is hymn because it takes lands, but you can't justify a SB slot for leyline.

Congrats indeed! Any chance we'll get a decklist and report? Found out it was a featured match, but can't play it on Twitch...

    Yeah good job !
    Could you tell us what did you beat ? I saw you went to an impressive 7-1 ;
saw a part of the final I think you made some missplay against patriot with siding (you should side out duress/seize/some scrying for grudge/clasme/deluge) and against patriot maze is awesome usually first land I search for. You stall with them (if not TNN)
then deluge/clasme the board and go with library+token ftw. Also mull to 5 in game 3 :(
Anyway maybe the deck will see some more play and happy you won 4 UndergroundSea with it.

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Finished 2nd (of 144 players) at the Prague Eternal yesterday! :). Played adrieng's version with slightly different Sideboard.

    R1: Grixis Delver - 2:0
    R2: 12-Post - 1:2
    R3: UR Delver - 2:0
    R4: Grixis Delver with green - 2:1
    R5: Death and Taxes - 2:1
    R6: Reanimator (with Blazing Archon .. *sigh*) - 2:1
R7: BUG Delver - 2:0 (opp. got Gameloss for marked sleeves and then T2 token)
R8: BUG Delver - 2:1 (killed my opp. in 3rd game with Hexmage beatdown :D)

    semifinals: UR Delver - 2:1
quarterfinals: Sneak and Show - 2:0 (how is Emrakul against 20/20 and KArakas :D)
finals: UWR Delver - 1:2 (had poor draw, played poorly second game :()

I would like to highlight few moments

    - I drew singleton Toxic Deluge against Reanimator when the Blazing Archon was on the table (which run into token as he didn't expected combo from lands Urborg, Forest, Thespian + Crop Rotation)
    - Karakas was used only once, in quarterfinals against Sneak and Show, when my opponent played Sneak Attack and for the last mana send Emrakul attacking. I said hold a second, Crop Rotated into KArakas, bounced token and in the next turn killed his Sneak Attack with Krosan Grip and Pithing Needle backup. It was nice moment.
    - 12post was so annoying matchup with their gain life for each Locus. They also play some bounce spells and Karakas. I played first, fired off Inquisition to see Pithing Needle, Sensei Top and some lands. I took Pithing Needle. Pass, Sensei, pass. I played land, Crop Rotation into Depths, Hexmage, Token, go. He looked at top 3 cards in the upkeep, played a land, Crop Roration for Karakas for my token. Well, such things happen...
    - It is so great to see the inevitability of death of UR/Grixis Delvers when you just play lands and then make 20/20 and they can't asnwer it. Priceless. Bug and WUR delvers are more diffcult though.
    - in the 8th round, I played against BUG Delver. It was 3rd game. He opened with Deathrite, I had Discard, Pyroblast, Needle and some stuff and decided to play needle first (what a fool!¨). He counter Needle, played Wasteland. I play Duress to see another wasteland .. fuck. Change of plan!. Then he pondered for 3rd Wasteland and I knew I will have a bad time this game (needed to win to getinto top8). So I played 2 of my Hexmages from Urborg (obviously my opponent didn¨t know the deck at all) and slowly killed him with them!
    - some of my games had been streamed yesterday and should be available to watch soon.

All in all, the deck is awesome. It has game against everything and the more imporant, some decks don't have game against us. It is very entertaining and challenging (is it really so? did playtesting only with DnT and monoR painter). I know I did several mistakes during the course of the tournament and I could've played better. Sideboarding was the field where I was the most uncertain about. As long as this meta won't shift, BGr Dark Depths is a great choice. I would like to thank you guys who are working on the deck and answered my questins (especially adrieng).

Maindeck is stock list with 4th Sylvan Scrying instead of Life from the loam

    Sideboard:
    3x Ancient Grudge
    3x Ratchet Bomb
    1x Reclamation Sage
    1x Krosan Grip
    1x thoughtseize
    3x Pyroclasm
    1x Toxic Deluge
    1x KArakas
    1x Bojuka bog

    To P-E - thanks! :)

To adriengs - congratulation on your run. Loss against Painter is unfortunate. From my testing they can't win even with Blood Moon after sideboarding (talking about monoR version) and sometimes we can steal the game 1 if they set painter on blue with Pyroblasts in hand.

Edit: yep, I definitely boarded wrong in the finals. Take in mind I've never played this matchup before. My thinking process was - needle the Wasteland, discard him as much as possile to get rid of Swords to Plowshares, put Sylvan into play and race him. With +20 from StP it should be possible. Grudge takes the equipment and occasional needles. Well, I was wrong. And didn't even boarded in Toxic Deluge in G2 ... just being greedy. G2 was horrible in general. for example, there was a moment when I had 2 black mana open and Thouightseize and Inquisition. I should've fire off Thoughtseize first to get rid of TC and then Inquisition into Daze. Maybe he would Force that Thoughtseize, but from the game went bad.

    Hey guys,

Ive been playing Depths combo in Loam Pox, but I am interested in this version of the combo as well. What are the keys to playing this deck?

Are the pithing needles for Wastelands mostly?

I saw this version of the deck as well: http://facetofacegames.tumblr.com/po...gacy-event-oct which first piqued my interest

    know all of the interactions

you can make a token with 3 lands, urborg, stage, depths

you should play a urborg t1 if you have a depths / hexmage in your hand because you could draw into the other.

    crop rotation protects against wastelands

things like that make you a better player.

pithing needles hit (usually in this order) wastelands (usually when blind T1 g1), karakas, maze of ith, knight of the reliquary, other threats not directly resulting in loss of token, such as liliana, jace, DRS, grim lavamancer, aether vial, mother of runes.

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Tested about 15 games against Elves last night. It seemed like a pretty favorable matchup pre-board. Didn't even bother with post-board games, as it'll get even more favorable with Pyroclasm and Ratchet Bomb. Tabernacle was actually pretty good here if they didn't have a Cradle. I won a few games my Crop Rotating for the Tabernacle to essentially Time Walk him by having him spend his turn paying the upkeep on his guys, disabling him from going off. This bought me the turn necessary to create a token my next turn.

Got all the cards I need so I'll be running adrieng's updated 4-Scrying list -1 Scrying, -1 Duress, +1 Maze of Ith, +1 Tabernacle this Thursday at my LGS.

Thanks! I will definitely try this sometime. What do you think of Dark Confidants/Living Wish in it? My pox list uses living wish and loam to assemble the combo, but Crop rotation seems better here. But could there be room for CR and LW?

  17. #337

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Living Wish is way too slow and forces you to play 3 copies of each combo piece - thus lowering your chances of drawing a combo naturally. Not really a position where you want to be against countermagic.

Sylvan Library is better in this deck than Dark Confidant because you see one more card and plays well with opposing Swords to Plowshares. Dark Confidant is also a magnet for the removals that are pretty often dead otherwise. Try adriengs version as it is and you might be surprised with the results. It has good Delver matchup (especially UR version) and everything else is also beatable. Maindecking Pithing Needles, discard + Pyroblasts is a thing.

Agreed with Lio. I used to play Junk Depths with Living Wish and it's definitely quite a bit slower. That approach might still be viable in a midrange shell that isn't all-in on the combo, utilizing threats like Knight of the Reliquary, Tarmogoyf, etc.

this is accurate. Living wish is better when you also want to use a wish board.

to break it down further to cast living wish you are required to have green mana. the best case scenario with it is

    T1 mana confluence
    t2 urborg, living wish
    T3 dethps hexmage

casting hexmage is not ideal. at least in my opinion just because it can be killed or you can be forced into an awkward situation with liliana of the veil.

if you have a crop rotation in the above situation you can crop away mana confluence for thespians stage.

if you are going with the stage route, expedition map is equally as good and results in a T3 token also since you do not need colored mana.

generally reducing the numbers of drawing into it you are crutching on your search spells and thats not really that great. Search spells can get discarded but lands cannot.
