As the title states, I want to play MTG online for free - any recommendations for MAC users?
Cheers!
Cockatrice do work on MAC though? :)
I thought Cockatrice is down?
Oh well - maybe it's just the German side of things:

Yep, The german cockatrice got shut down some time ago, after being told to take it down, otherwise he'd get sued (the one running it).
Woogerworks decided to host it afterwards.

Does Cockatrice actually work well on MACs? If so, I'll be downloading it tonight.
yes. In fact, i like it so much i fear i'll be disappointed if i ever switch to mtg. It seems like ppl on cockatrice complain about the common riffraff and noobs that play but are much happier with the interface. MTGO ppl complain about the interface but are happy with the opponents because they are more serious.
Additionally, you can even change the pictures displayed for each card that is played. So if you opponent is playing an ugly version of a card you can change it to whatever version you would like to see.

I played against CapnCook last night a little bit as he helped me walk through the mess of an install. It automatically was pointing files at a directory that didn't exist and then wouldn't function because of it, either way, problem solved. I haven't played any sort of online magic since MWS 8-10 years ago, it was certainly fun even if it took me a little while to get used to the hang of things.
Two things of note if you want to make the most of your Cockatrice experience:
- Using the Buddy List and Ignore Lists is key. Ignore the 10%-20% of users that do stupid things, and then never play them again. Add the quality opponents you encounter to your buddy list, and you can expect to play good games vs them in the future more easily. Additionally, ignore the "unregistered" users completely and you will eliminate most of the really bad opponents.
- Single Player mode is excellent for testing certain cards in rapid fire succession. It lets you step through games (with you playing both sides at once) without worrying about being technically correct or completing all steps of a typical game, so you can focus completely on how certain cards function and how variance applies to any particular deck.
