Thread: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

Tried the same list as above, but with these changes:
    -4 Sandstone Needle +4 Mountain
-2 Koth of the Hammer +2 Pyromancy

Needles were changed, because of this: You: t1, Needle. Opp: Wasteland. You: sh*t. It proved to be a problem: without needle, it's harder to get sneak attack/TtB on T2, although wasteland problem is solved - if you play tomb/city, you can still get your mana before land is wasted (as compared to needle)
Pyromancy - just wanted to give them one more chance. It worked.

Quick report - local tournament, 2-2
    R1: Death and Taxes, combo'ed G1 T1 and G2 T2. 2-0
R2: mono U martyr. This matchup is so bad, that your grandchildren will learn at school how bad it is. 12 free counterspells, creatures with countermagic installed (judge's familiar, blue martyr, cursecatcher), more counters in SB - BEB, Spell Pierce. Horrible. 0-2
R3: Don't remember, but won this
    R4: lost to Pox due mul to 5 both G1 & G2

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

    Back to Koth:
    1. I play 12 mountains
    2. Koth's Emblem is forever
    3. Pyromancy takes more turns to kill. That gives your opponent time to deal with it.

    Quick report:
    R1: Shardless Bug
    G1: Mull, draw garbage
G2: I have Sneak Attack (no mana for activation), 2 Emrakuls and another Chalice (on 1 is already in play), he plays Hymn to Tourach. Promptly randomizes both Emrakuls. I fail to topdeck any fatty...
    0-2
    0-1

    R2: Deth and Taxes
G1 and G2: mull to 5, draw garbage
    0-2
    0-2

    R3: BYE
    2-0
    1-2

    R4: Reanimator
My worse matchup, but ir works like swiss clock:
    G1: I mull to 5, draw garbage
G2 and G3: sol land, defense grid, sneak attack for grisel AND emrakul.
    2-1
    2-2

Overall - not impressed. I had really horrible hands, even more horrible draws, so no reasonable data recorded :(

    Jupiter Games Report

Hey guys, haven't played mtg in a while. Went to a local 6 round 1K and chopped top 8 (cause my first opponent was in my car) with this little bit of spice. I didn't take notes so I'll report what I remember, if I played you and misremembered our game, please correct me.

Tournament: Jupiter Games, Johnson City, NY. 35 players, 6 rounds cut to top 8.

    List

    4 sneak attack
    4 through the breach
    1 pyromancy

    4 emrakul, the aeons torn
    3 griselbrand
    2 worldspine wurm

    3 chalice of the void
    3 trinisphere
    3 defense grid

    1 commune with lava
    3 inferno titan

    4 simian spirit guide
    4 seething song
    3 lotus petal

    7 mountain
    4 ancient tomb
    4 city of traitors
    3 sandstone needle

    //SB
    1 tormod's crypt
    1 grafdigger's cage
    2 koth of the hammer
    3 blood moon
    1 trinisphere
    1 defense grid
    1 red elemental blast
    2 pyroblast
    2 pyroclasm
    1 sudden shock

    Round 1 Burn
Game 1: I have turn one emrakul on the play. I play mountain go. He plays mountain goblin guide, I hold my emrakul until turn three to get a pair of goblin giudes and some mountains, win shortly after.
SB: In trinisphere, 2 pyroclasm / Out 3 defense grid
Game 2: I need a sneak target, I whiff 4 turns in a row. die at zero with emrakul on top of the library and no cards in oponnents hand :-(
Game 3: I'm pretty confident I can beat burn on the play every time. Unfortunately opponent gets a game loss for deck reg error.
    1-0

    Round 2 UWr Truename/stoneforge
Game 1: Hes on the play, and ponders, I turn 2 trinisphere after he plays stoneforge, he whiffs on land turn three and four and I land a pyromancy. 2 turns later I dump my hand on his life points. win.
SB: In defense grid, 2 pyroblast, reb, 2 blood moon / Out 3 chalice of the void, 3 trinisphere
Game 2: We play land go for a couple turns, then fight over a defense grid, it resolves, I through the breach emrakul the next turn and find a finisher before he can build back to 3 land.
    2-0

    Round 3 Miracles
Game 1: I land defense grid and trinisphere early. His counterbalance hits Terminus as I commune with lava for 4. I cant find a sneak effect for about 4 turns as a snapcaster tics me down and some angels finish me off.
SB In 2 koth, 2 pyroblast, reb, trinisphere, defense grid / Out 3 chalice 3 inferno titan 1 lotus petal
Game 2: I start casting spirit guides turn 3. He starts casting hate bears. I cast 4 mountain apes. He casts 2 containment priest, a meddling mage, and I REB his snapcaster. Monkey beatdown wins the game.
Game 3: 7: cards 2 city of traitors, bunch of fatties. 6 cards: 1 city of traitors, bunch of prison effects. 5 cards: no land. 4 cards: tomb, sneak, emrakul, x. Keep. Top counterbalance comes down immediately, I can't do much. lose
    2-1

    Round 4 dark maverick
Game 1: Chalice at 1 into worldspine wurm>A batterskull+stoneforge (unless hes playing pulse, turns out he was, but not enough) win.
SB: In 2 pyroclasm, sudden shock / Out 2 defense grid 1 trinisphere
Game 2: He gets to 8 permanents before I can emrakul. I lose to a leftover batterskull and germ.
Game 3: From 16 life with 6 points of damage looming but a tapped out opponent, I tap out to sneak in a grisel, draw 7, whiff on a manasource, draw 7 more, get there.
    3-1

    Round 5 UR Delver
Game 1: On the play a turn 1 defense grid resolves. I kinda go nuts.
    SB: In 2 pyroblast, 1 reb, 1 defense grid, 2 pyroclasm, trinisphere / out 3 chalice, 1 pyromancy, 1 commune, 2 griselbrand
Game 2: I ship my 7. Accidentally draw 7, have to ship down to 5, no land, keep a good 4. Needle needle tomb mountain lets me play defense through daze, daze, pierce, fow via REB. I resolve an inferno titan to clear the board and close the game.
    4-1

Round 6 ID into top 8 locked in 3rd place

Top 8 Round 1 Miracles (who I was riding with) agree to chop. Get home before dark.

    Some thoughts on the day:
    1. New tech, commune with lava: I like it. I walked it into a topdeck terminus counterbalance trigger the one time I drew it but I'm going to keep trying it.
    2. Miracles matchup: I've always kept chalice in against these guys because of top and all the cantrips. I think thats wrong. Today I went with the chalices out and the REBs in, I was way happier. I felt much more confident in the matchup. Also approximately 20% of the field was miracles, ugh.
    3. The list: I was pretty happy with it. I want to fit a second commune but moving a chalice to the board and maybe cutting a clasm is my only idea. And I'm not sold yet.

    Cheers mtg land

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

    Hi all,
I haven't played with that deck for almost 2 years, but I decided to give a new try tonight at a small weekly tournament but with good players
My titans can't wait to smash some DRS and Delvers

    The list I'll play :

    //20 lands
    4 ancient tomb
    3 City of traitors
    13 mountains

    // 8 Mana accelerators
    3 seething song
    4 simian spirit guide
    1 lotus ptal

    // 20 Combo
    4 sneak attack
    4 TTB
    4 Emrakul
    4 Worldspine wurm
    4 Inferno titan

    // 9 Lock
    4 Blood moon
    1 Magus of the moon
    4 Chalice

    // 3 Others
    3 magma jet

// Side ( really not optimized, just wanted to test a kind of transformational plan against miracle with rabble and koth)
    4 goblin rabblemaster
    1 koth of the hammer
    2 defense grid
    1 ingot chewer
    1 human breaking artifact (2/2 for 3, I can't remember his name..)
    1 sudden shock
    2 pyrokinesy
    1 trinisphere
    2 sulfur elemental

You'll get my feedback tomorrow :-)

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

Well, it went very good finally with a 4-0 :-)
    Quick report:

    - R1 vs Miracle mentor
G1: I keep a 2 mana hand, and get mana screwed.. A quick mentor will end the game..
G2: Mull 6 for both of us. I go for TTB at the end of of t2. He decides to let it go, hoping for emrakul ( he thought he could rebuild after). But a fat wurm comes for the win.
G3: Remake of the first game, I'm mana screwed, and I'm just able to sudden shock his first mentor. While I'm struggling to get moountains, he struggles to get a second mentor without succes.
Instead of draw, he decides to let me win. Gentleman!

    - R2: Elves
    G1: Sneak emrakul t2
G2: Keep an average hand but with pyrokinesie. I pyro his board end of his T2, go for magus at my t2. He has only 1 forest, not enough for Natural order that he has in hand :-)
T4 inferno titan for the win

    - R3: Miracle mentor
G1: T1 chalice, T2 blood moon, T3 Simian beater. It will strike for 20 life :-)
G2: 1st TTB countered .Koth get countered, then titan countered , then 2nd titan goes on the board, kills some snap, get sworded. 3rd titan will finish the game

    - R4: Reanimator ( more casual player)
g1: He mulls to 5. chalice T1 countered, other chalice T2 for the win
g2: We both mull to 6. Blood T2 countered (fow). Then he gambles into show and tell for Iona, but I have Emrakul.

Happy to perf again after 2 years without playing it.. I was globally lucky, or at least not to unlucky, except for the mana .

I'm glad to see your success with one of my favourite decks!
What if anything would you change from the main or side boards? Any reason your not running Griselbrand?
    Thanks for the report.

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

    On my main list:

    - Chalice and blood moon are still awesome. And titans too.
    - I would say I was not impressed by the magma jet, but I didn't really have the opportunity to use them. And I don't see anything really better ?
Maybe going back to 4 seething song would be good.
    - Why not grisel ? Well, I used to play it in the past, but I always prefered the other monsters : Basically, if you resolve a TTB or Sneak, you have to win , and so I prefer to directly swing with the wurm or 'Rakul than Grisel, which is only here to allow you to find the kill.
And as we're constraint by available slots: Wurm> Grisel, and Inferno titan > Grisel as it's a true game A AND game B win plan.
But I'm maybe the only one thinking that, so who knows..

    - Regarding the sideboard plan, I was eager to test the rabblemasters, bu I didn't have the opportunity to draw them..

One interesting point is the postsideboard plan vs Miracle: our deck just plays some many threats (especially with titan, some extra koth, rabble or anything from side), that you just have to play them one by one until you finally find a breach in their line :-)

Hrm...How useful is NUlamog (Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger)? That is almost as backbreaking as Emmy, as it exiles two [i]target[/cards] permanents the opponent controls.

The exile only happens when you cast Ulammog. The only creature this deck will typically cast is Inferno Titan. Also the mill 20, is irrelevant in most match ups.

3rd place, Mythic Games, Elmira, NY: 1K

Hey guys, haven't been playing regularly so my list probably isn't perfect for a large event, but I have a new friend and her name is Rakka.

@oathbreaker:I don't like the maindeck pyroclasm. Game one wants to be aggressive, pyroclasm is too defensive, there aren't enough creatures stopping us in game 1s to warrant more removal than titan. I also think if you're running 3 maindeck moons, you should have a 4th city of traitors to power them out turn 1. I go back and fourth on 3/4 sandstones but with a moon build I think 3 needle 4 traitors is better. Good luck at your event!! (And put some work into your sideboard, its worth it)

    Current list:

    8 mountain
    4 city of traitors
    4 ancient tomb
    3 sandstone needle

    4 simian spirit guide
    4 seething song
    3 lotus petal

    4 sneak attack
    4 through the breach
    4 emrakul, the aeons torn
    3 griselbrand
    2 worldspine wurm

    3 inferno titan
    1 rakka mar
    1 koth of the hammer

    3 trinisphere
    3 chalice of the void
    2 defense grid

    SB
    1 defense grid
    2 sulfur elemental
    1 pyroblast
    2 rakka mar
    1 koth of the hammer
    1 pyroclasm
    2 blood moon
    1 tormod's crypt
    1 chaos warp
    1 grafdigger's cage
    1 trinisphere
    1 sudden shock

I didn't take any notes and don't remember much from the tournament so no report but some notes. 5 rounds swiss, cut to top 8. I lost round 1 and won out. Got the pair down in the last round, had to play, crushed, and ended up seeded 1st in top 8, woohoo on the play all day! Lost to a shallow grave/goryo's/griselbrand combo in top 4.
-I want to say that rakka mar earned herself some spots in my 75. I've been looking for another card that can win on its own. There was a push for goblin rabblemaster but he didn't cut it for me. Unchecked, sure it's a fine clock...so is rakka! Abrupt decay? nope. I also like she can be used defensively if need be since the tokens don't have to attack.
-1 rakka 1 koth in the main deck because I wanted some versatility. I think game one should be super aggressive, but knowing the meta I was in, I assumed to play against control a majority of the day, in a large event, these slots would be dedicated game 1 aggression or lock.
-Sorry pyromancy, I just didn't miss you yesterday.
    -Hope everyone is well!

This is what I have at the moment for the sideboard.

    4 Ingot Chewer
    4 Grafdigger's Cage
    1 Cavern of Souls
    1 Ashen Rider
    1 Surgical Extraction
    2 Defense Grid
    2 Pyroclasm

Your point about the Pyroclasm's main board has me seriously considering moving things around though. Great points.
    Thanks.

Having lost to Andrew Hiser and this deck a number of times, I can say that this thing is the real deal.

Wurmcoil is there because 6 mana is easily achieved turn 2-3 with the deck. It leaves 2 bodies after it's been breached/sneaked as well. A 6 point life swing is always good especially in a deck that plays sol lands. Having been playing with Hiser's list now for 2 weeks, i can say that I've cast them turn 3 a dozen times and they can go the distance until i'm able to breach/sneak a griz/emrakul

He is exactly right. When I ran it I always was able to hit hard but never able to finish the job. Adding wurmcoil added a more long term game plan. I've made some more changes but they are in early testing. I'll post them once I feel comfortable.

And if you couldn't see from my feature match the answer is yes, the deck is all foil.

Re: Big Red (Mono-R Sneak Attack)

Ran Hiser's list at a local legacy over the weekend. Hiser actually stopped by half way through to witness my first loss (to painter combo). I ended up finishing second overall. Only loses were to Painter and Infect. I mean the infect player survived a emrakul board wipe, i drew gas and no threats he drew the balls to kill me, both games.

I did 1 minor adjustment. I ran 1 mainboard Koth and one in the board and he felt extremely clunky each time I cast him. Overall, the deck is extremely fun to play. So long as you don't run into a counterspell heavy meta. I'm considering running a boseiju who shelters all in this list just for extra insurance on the Through the Breach.

10/10 would & will play this list again.

Has anyone tried testing with the new commander card, Magus of the Wheel? I will be trying it as a one of in place of a Griselbrand. It may turn out to be total trash, but feel it's worth a try.
I also just noticed this list made 13th place at the Star City legacy IQ this past Sunday in Philly.
Seems like our little pet deck is starting to catch on!
