I would rather receive something unique, like the above list, related to Santa/The Source that some foil Japanese unable to find cards.

The only time I participated (2012?), this was the postcard that came with the gift that I enjoyed the most. I still have it above by desktop 3 years later. Thanks sdematt and nedleeds.

This looks like a recurring issue each year and I agree with both of you. I have hope like in previous years that these are the minority, but so far I do see some lower value items on most lists. I do understand that they are wishlists (an mtg player can dream of course!), but I think people should have realistic expectations on what they may receive. I saw an individual post brackets for value in one of the other years I participated. For example, an under $20 bracket, $21 - $50, $50 - 100, $100+ to provide options. I love that idea and will be using it when I post my own wishlist. If there is nothing accessible/not of high value on a list, then maybe they should be paired with someone else who has the same expectations. My .02, but GnuHouse is the shot caller this year.

Let's take a deep breath everyone.

Wishlists are exactly that...a list of wishes. You're not beholden to them, you don't have to fulfill anything on that list, it's just there as guidance.

From personal experience, a majority of people are reasonable, don't fill it up with ungodly wants, and try to keep the spirit of the exercise in mind. I've tried to keep mine reasonable in the past, had a few things that were larger (like LEDs and Forces), but kept the list reasonable. I've been "rewarded" as such, with each year getting some awesome stuff (including foil fetches from one generous Sourcer).

I'm going to keep my eye on some of the lists and make sure they don't get too crazy, but remember two things folks

1) Lists are suggestions and don't have to be adhered to
2) If your list is crazy, don't have any expectations that you'll get things off of it

It's a bit sad that we got the same bullshit going on as last year, and I'm not referring to crazy wishlists. If you don't like what you see, stay out of here and don't post it. I'm pretty sure everyone here is mature enough to understand that they possibly get matched to a crazy wishlist and then will do the best they can regardless to make that person happy. Please let the people who do join enjoy it.

With exception of 1 list (Noctalor) who has already admitted that his list is a stretch from getting fulfilled and he's ok with that, the lists are not bad at all. Keep in mind that this is a legacy forum where we drop THOUSANDS of dollars on decks. $35 is practically nothing. It's like 3 fetch lands from standard sets. Even double that amount, $70 is still very little by legacy standards.

People with crazy lists have been told that they should expect not to get anything off their list and yet they still sign up which is fine. They were given the disclaimer and accepted the terms.

There are some things that can be done to mitigate the rage and possibly make everyone happy.

1. People can opt into different values tiers. You could do $25, $50, $100 tiers (think someone else mentioned this). People can choose their tier and if there are enough people to fill a tier it gets granted.
2. People can choose whose wish list they want to fulfill. Obviously this would be kept anonymous but if you see someones list and you just happen to have what they are looking for ask to fulfill their wish list.
3. Set a default gift for people that can't fulfill lists. If you get a list that you can't fulfill then maybe just give a few staples such as a couple fetch lands.

Its really simple guys. Give a reasonable list or expect the default gift.

Also, if you are worried about a few extra bucks over the minimum than maybe you need to rethink your participation because if money is so tight save your money...

As the organizer last year, let me say two a few things.

1) The fail rate is actually extremely low. From last year, I only had two complaints of no gifts received. One the package supposedly got sent out, and one package I know didn't get sent out. While any failures I'm not happy with, I think that this is actually a pretty great success rate, considering that there were 67 participants. This could also have been avoided if I would have known how and when to use backup santas properly.

2) Almost nobody is unhappy with the gifts they receive. Every single year people complain about the wish lists being too extravagant. However, virtually nobody who actually has participated and received a gift complained about not getting expensive things from their wishlist. In fact we find quite the opposite in most cases: people astounded by how awesome their santas are. From having followed everything as organizer last year, I would say greed is far from how I would describe anything about the event.

3) A lot of people's initial wishlists are crazier than their final wishlists. It's really easy to write a temporary list and include all those crazy cards you've been dreaming about; however, people generally go back to add more depth to their lists as time goes on. In my opinion there's nothing wrong with putting crazy things on wishlists, as long the person also has reasonable things to balance it out. I don't think people that put these crazy things on wishlists actually expect to receive them, but wishlists are just that, wishes.

4) It's also sad to have people see a little bit negative in the event, fixate on these negatives, and then try to vilify the entire event. Nothing is perfect, but the Secret Santa event has been a very successful event year after year.

Wouldn't be Christmas without the Source Secret Santa. Year #4 for me.

While I do play Legacy, my real love is Magic 94! I'm always on the hunt for any cards from Alpha to the Dark, so pretty much everything and anything from those sets will get me excited. I play by the Swedes rules, so Unlimited is the only white border for me! Don't feel like you have to get me some from Magic 94, that's just my favourite format. I also play EDH, so cool build-around-mes or your favourite tech is always welcome. I used to be into foreign cards, but lately haven't really been feeling it, so my only request is English only cards please :)
