Thread: [Deck] Turbo Depths

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Took Depths to a small GPT 17 people

    4-0-1 First Seed

Easily beat Jund/Infect/Storm/Grixis Delver and drew with a friend on Infect

Lost my quarters to Loam Pox. He drew a perfect hymn and 3 crop rotos to beat my 2x NoTW +Scrying for Steppe

Hello all! I'm looking to buy into Legacy with this deck. I've done some testing on Cockatrice and I've really enjoyed it. However, my local metagame is obviously going to be very different to what you would see on Cockatrice. Here is my decklist, which is definitely on the Turbo Depths gameplan. My local metagame, as far as I know, consists of a lot of Rb Reanimator, Burn, and there is one Infect and one D&T. What I'm trying to figure out is if I should remove the "Turbo" part of the deck to include some answers. The deck is very fast, but I wonder how it will do against D&T, which is a terrible matchup. Thoughts?
3 Bayou (Read: Overgrown Tomb, because I'm poor)
    1 Bojuka Bog
    4 Dark Depths
    1 Ghost Quarter
    1 Sejiri Steppe
    1 Snow-Covered Forest
    1 Snow-Covered Swamp
    4 Thespian's Stage
    3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Verdant Catacombs (Probably going to be Windswept Heaths for the time being because I already own them. I'm trying to reach a playable 75 before optimizing it.)

    8 CREATURES
    4 Elvish Spirit Guide
    4 Vampire Hexmage

    20 INSTANTS and SORC.
    4 Crop Rotation
    2 Duress
    1 Inquisition of Kozilek
    2 Into the North
    3 Not of This World
    4 Sylvan Scrying
    4 Thoughtseize

    9 OTHER SPELLS
    1 Expedition Map
    4 Lotus Petal
    4 Pithing Needle

    SIDEBOARD
    4 Abrupt Decay
    1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All
    2 Duress
    1 Golgari Charm
    1 Karakas
    4 Rite of Consumption
    2 Surgical Extraction

The Death and Taxes matchup will be more manageable with a few changes.

    1) Cut Into the North for more Expedition Maps. This allows you to have an easier time finding Stage and Ghost Quarter in the matchup.

    2) Get some Sylvan Library in the sideboard. Death and Taxes doesn't have very many ways of dealing with this card besides applying a clock, and if they Swords a token you can draw a lot of cards with it.

I like the Boseiju + Rite of Consumption in the board for Miracles. I would like to see some Sylvan Libraries as well to help assemble this plan ASAP (because otherwise you will be vulnerable to Mentor or especially Entreat out of the newer Predict builds that turbo out an Entreat. I went back to testing Rite of Consumption last night and beat Predict Miracles and Legends Miracles (will probably be making a video series).

    My current sideboard online:
    1 Boseiju
    4 Rite of Consumption
    4 Abrupt Decay
    4 Sylvan Library
    1 Pithing Needle
    1 Karakas
If you're wondering how I produce blue mana, I copy my opponent's Island with Thespian's Stage

My Youtube and Twitch usernames are DNSolver.

    I am the Legacy metagame:

-2016 Eternal Weekend Europe won by BR Reanimator (I wrote the primer)
-2016 Eternal Weekend North America won by Turbo Dark Depths (I write about and develop the winning version specifically)
    -Refiner of Hogaak Depths.

Welcome! Also, save even more money and avoid Submerge blowouts by playing Blooming Marshes over Tombs. This seems even more beneficial if you're in a burn-heavy meta. My deck is currently on 2 Verdants, 1 Bayou, 3 Blooming Marsh (1 Shizo instead of a 7th Dual source but it's probably getting cut) but I was on 4 Marsh 1 Verdant for quite a while and found it fine. Also I think you would benefit from going to 8 discard spells.

Yeah I think rites of consumption +boseiju might be a very good plan for miracle ; also rite of consumption might be great against death and taxes if you can stall with something like dread of night
    befre assembling the combo.

I need to test that plan.

DNSolver wrecked me pretty hard yesterday with Rite of Consumption (I was the Predict Miracles player). Both game 2 and 3 I thought I was safe with a Swords in hand and Termnius floating on top, and then out of nowhere boom dead.

I do feel like Library is what really won both of those games, though.

Didn't realize that you were playing a full 4 of them. That seems like a solid sideboard plan though, last time I played this deck I was on the 4 Chalice plan, which never felt that great. Gonna give Rite a try! What other matchups do you bring it on for?
Nobody plays Legacy anymore, the tournaments are all too crowded

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Thanks guys! I tried it out with a few tweeks and it feels a lot better!
    -2 Bayou
    -1 Verdant Catacombs
    -2 Into the North
    +3 Blooming Marsh
    +1 IoK
In the sideboard, I went with the following changes
    -2 Abrupt Decay
    +2 Sylvan Library
I might try to squeeze a third into there somehow. Thoughts?

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Golgari Charm and Duress in the sideboard are weaker than Abrupt Decay, which can deal with Counterbalance / Blood Moon / Mentor out of Miracles (while being uncounterable), kill a clock out of Delver, or kill creatures out of Death and Taxes.

I used to be a huge proponent of blooming marsh until the CITP clause lost me quite a large number of games. I'm down to 2 now. I'll try out this rite of consumption nonsense :)

same here and it feels smooth and solid (used to play 3 Bayous and no Marshes).

regarding Rite of Consumption - what is the line of play as it is a sorcery so no reactive play? I assume you make a token, keep prio and throw it at their face straight after using the might of Boseiju?

  11. #1511

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

That's the general plan. However, sometimes on Sylvan Library openings I get to a point where I've grinded them down quite a bit, and then just Thoughtseize -> make token -> Rites without needing Boseiju. Be aware that in order to beat all removal with this plan, you will have to make the token in your main phase.

    SB:
    +4 Sylvan Library
    +4 Rite of Consumption
    +1 Boseiju
    +1 Pithing Needle
    +4 Abrupt Decay
    -8 fast mana
-3 Not of This World (Rite is better, you will have time to make land drops)
-2 Crop Rotation (I like the flexibility of being able to get Steppe, Bog, a combo land, or Boseiju, so 2 stay in)
-1 Dark Depths (don't need multiples of a legendary land.

This turns your whole deck into a pile of Top hate, Decays/discard, an uncounterable win condition, and ways to find the win condition.

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Do you ever find 4 Library too much? I usually play 2 max. I guess it makes you more resilient to Abrupt Decay and helps guarantee you draw one when you want it.

I play my 2 maindeck as I don't see many matchups where you don't want them.

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

I am happy with my maindeck configuration right now. Against Miracles, I always want to be able to play one on turn 2 after a discard spell or Needle (that might get countered), and having a second one is fine because you can replace it after it gets hit by Wear/Tear. Against Death and Taxes, it's the first card I look for in my opening hand, followed by Needles and Decays.

I am clearly missing something here, but how is sorcery speed Rites good versus instant Miracle or instant Plow? Happy to learn more :)

You make the token and hold priority as you are the active player, and just cast rites with boseiju ftw. They can't plow the token/karakas bounce in responce cause sac it is part of the cost of consumpiton.

What is your current mainboard? Thanks for sharing! I definitely need to get a Boseiju and some Rites to try out as well.

Off topic, but man the foil BFZ Sylvan Scrying is beautiful. Still super cheap too.

Any reason why we don't play Grafdigger's Cage?

I've also been trying Fatal Push and want to try Collective Brutality.

I run a Grafdigger's Cage in my SB for Elves, Reanimator, and Dredge--along with 2 Faerie Macabre for the graveyard decks. So far it's been really good for just crushing Reanimator, which can be a little bit of a coin flippy match-up otherwise.

    Re: [Deck] Dark Depths

Maybe it is a dumb question but why not playing rite of consumption maindeck instead of not of this world with a random boseiju ?
Rite is very good against miracle with boseiju and correct against death and taxes it can steal games
