    Ovino 2014 - 18th/476, Storm

Deck: Grim Fullmoon Uber Storm of Flips and Tricks
    Event: Ovino 2014
    Place: 18/476 (9R, Top 16)

by hardcore Storm palyer from Prague

this report was meant for ANT thread originaly therefore involves common storm card accronyms, It got bit longer and expands on Ovino experience in general so I decided to put it here. If you're interested in the deck and SB construction, my views on builds and MUs check the Ant thread and my older mediocre reports here and here

    list:

no news is Italy is infested with Miracles with strong presence of UBG... therefore my list change from previous tournaments where I prefer Bolts MD... also multiple Miracles mean mediocre Miracle players and REB, no Ponder versions - so the Pithing Needle tech and deck construction should catch many people off guard, the CoV is a last minute change and won't probably be there next time

    Intro
We decided travel here in July, I got accompanied by my LGS friends Tomas Vlcek (remember that name well, you will read that at SCG next month) on Schonegger Miracles, he's a mirror specialist with strong aversion to "american" cute lists, Svaca 18 old card shark on a signature BUGr build, both crush every local tournament the get into (top2/top8 at the Prague Eternal) and Martin on 12post which should be great meta call... We land in Milan by Thursday afternoon meet with Sawatarix and our "host" Prague/Italian expat Igor (on Svaca's deck, report) who is from Milan, go get some delicious thick pizza and check the site - interesting "Mental games club" where people play Bang next to greedy Mtg traders in the midnight..

    Friday
morning = sightseeing (the Duomo is really impressive), afternoon =

    Friday Trial
list feats +Notion Thief +Pithing Needle -2 CoV

    UWr tempo w Snapcasters 2:0
    G1 - discard everything -> T4 Pif
G2 - Pyroblast his BS, combo into FoW with spare IT on Top was boss

    4C Loam (Niklas Kronberger) 1:2
Name seemed familiar but had not recognized him at first
G1 - he mulls 5 -> T1 Cotv 1, while we draw-go and I play just fetches he repeats the trick in fear of AD, so crack fetches and kill him
G2 - he takes EtW with Sculler, Liliana hits the table before I can eot AD into goblins of hope (I have wrong fetch-dual interaction that cost me the game)
G3 - I go for PiF against 1 unknown card... Chalice deck plays a Crop rotation obv.

    S+T 0:2
    older guy
G1 - slower hand, 0 discard till turn 5 he showed me Grizzly, my attempt gets fowed
G2 - mull 6 both I Probe seeing Grizzly, 3x Fow, Fluster, land,... his T2 he shows me a Grisselbrand obv.. at the last turn his hands are really shaking, he counters nearly everything when i try to go off last turn so I get to IT -> Karakas... he drew 28 cards so Emmy gets me next turn

I'm pretty pissed after this turn - but 8 man just opens (5E - winner gets 1 Bye + free entrance = 30 E - Whaaat?) and I get to play the 1st one of them

    8-man trial

    Omnitell 2:0
    guy looks like Miracles
G1 - shows me Emmy, I show off
G2 - he mulls and shows me a Leyline T2 =D, I Notion Thief Eot, he has to FoW, next turn Goblins get there in 2 swings

rest of the 8 man is Miracles Mirror, cool UGB Deedstill vs Jund, Infect vs. Miracles, outside of my Infect in my bracket everyone is still in G1 so we start playing

    Infect 2:1
    cool guy
G1 - keeps slower hand w multiple counters and dies
    G2 - has T3 discard proof kill
G3 - does something infect instead of RiP and I punish ultimately

other matches still have not finished R1... so i get a snack and watch an hour of Deed on Miracles (Manlands vs. Clique under standstill, resulting into crack and last turn Keranos kill was cool, anyway Deed win...)

    UBG Deedstill 1:2
(I think the he won a 200 ppl tournament recently with it), I saw his SB and 90% of the deck which is slow as hell but I'm pretty worried, I have to be pretty lucky to take it home, he has wastelock, Standstill, SDT, Liliana, Deed, Pulse, Sb feats Swansong, 2x Extraction, 2x Cage... Extraction is really the worst
    G1 - my 7 is a possible 12 Goblins but without B source - mull 6 = the same + GP and B source, he has FoW without U card = dead...
G2 - this gets super long, Needled his Top, he beats me with a Factory, I try to play around SE (got BS and IT extracted (intentional, but maybe slight mistake there)), break 2 Standstills, he draws like 5 cards from Jace... I'm alive because of inhand ToA and but can't reach the last 1 storm everytime he CS something... at last I get rid of all the counterspells and get to Ponder with 9 mana in pool into possible 4 outs (2 Pif, 2nd Toa, EtW) and do not find even a cantrip... anyway this felt pretty winable despite him drawing 10+ cards more
G3 - I shread his hand to lands in first 4 turns while he locks me on 2 basics with his 2 Wastes, he extracts my Ponders and again I miss 1 Storm with in hand ToA, I continue to draw just rituals until he draws Liliana and diminishes my handsize, double Factory beats mean I lose without a single counterspell cast drawing just mana

italian foil DCi Path to Exile leaves me bitter in the end of the day... Legacy trial ends by split around midnight, my Miracle and Burg teammates are here as well as Sawatarix, Tomas beats Svaca in quaterfinals and wins the trial at 2 am

    Saturday Legacy

I changed the SB a bit after thinking more about Sawatarixs super green plan (AD+Krosan Grips - which top 16 guy also adopted) and CoV, I feel like underestimating them lately and after discussion with Tomas I changed literaly in last seconds.
The tournament starts 1 hour earlier than expected - just half hour later than announced... 10 rounds are announced in italian

    UR Sneaky Omnitell 2:1
this one look familiar, my guess is Miracles and insta regret my CoV choice, I win the roll
G1 - I probe him, see T3 Show+Grizzly with SP, Misdirection and Intuition I regret even more... I get something misdirected and he Shows me T3 with Island untapped, I Duress into it, which gets SPed... great I go for it and he has 0 FoW in 14 cards... ok tide turns, I get to be lucky today...
G2 - mull 6, he T3 Shows me an Emrakul, I show him a Notion Thief, he Misdirects my Therapy, and blind PiF do not get there by 1 card
G3 - he mulls 5, me 6, at some moment he has 2 Omniscience (which I haven't seen yet) 2 FoW and Grizzly - CTherepy -> FoW, Extirpate your FoW -> gg,tnx, bye
SB: -Swamp -LP -CR -Duress -Ponder -ToA +2 Needle +Extirpate +Notion Thief +2 Pyroblast

    Oops All spells 2:0
very friedly opp - as he sits down, his lifepad has 18 nothing and 18 nothing for both games, instant red flag, this means Belcher or very lucky S+T deck... hi wins the roll
mull 6, he has 2 GP and passes
G1 - I probe seeing both black guys, 2 DR, 1CR, no initial mana source, CT his DR, check his hand few times into T5 kill ... I played against the deck at BoM, and he SBed into Belcher back then (dunno why Ithing it less consistent)
G2 - he mulls 6 or 5 I keep a hand that does "nothing" - Probe, Needle, Extripate, Therapy, something... he just passes, I GP - he has multiple Spirit guides and some other mana I make his hand even worse... I keep Extripate open and when I play Needle on Belcher he scoops after seeing my hand
SB: -Swamp -ToA -2SDT +2 Needle +Extirpate +CoV (because of Belcher without activation)

that was fast, I get a long break, but much longer than expected - I watch Kai losing to a good Miracle player - it's a fake match because both players are not on the pairing due to byes, they get manualy paired to play against each other... just to get rufunded with a bye later instead... you don't understand? welcome to Italy!

    Losset Miracles 2:1
    looks like Miracles
G1 - and he is, I check his hand discard a Top or CB and perform a FoW proof kill tnx to inhand PiF around T3 or 4, I think I see a REB
G2 - I get a slower start, know he has FoW, get Cliqued and I draw EtW and ToA, I make 8 goblins into his 2 untapped mana, he lets it, I save CTherapy for extra ToA storm to be a turn faster (and since he can FoW it in case of EE), he has a Staticaster (dunno, probably should have tried a Therapy he might let it resolve as Staticaster is really inprobable target - I think I could make that out if thinking really hard, but I think he'd play it safe anyway, I haven't had such next level thoughts about the situation and I lose my Goblins and the game)
G3 - I'm not sure, both Miracle matches blend together, but I think I have 12 goblins T1 or T1 PiF kill and he has CS, REB, SP and irrelevant
    SB: -DR/CR (draw/play) -2LP -2SDT -Mire -Ponder/-GP(draw/play) -Duress +2Needle +Extripate +Tropical Island +3AD +2Pyroblast

At this point the system crashes due so we have like 2 hour uplanned break, this gets ridiculous, we can play separate tournament meanwhile... Svaca repeats his losing story over and over again - he lost to a UR Burn guy playing ridicolous burn spells feat Browbeat which repeatedly Swansonged his spell just to kill the swan with another ridiculous burn he hasn't seen played yet... he claims that a 2-1 draft pile can beat this weirdo and is pretty pissed how unbelievably has his deck betrayed him and complains about it for the rest of the day constantly

Miracles with REB and Clique, no Snapcaster 2:1
I know Tomas played him in the Trial yesterday, so I know what he's on, I doubt he saw me back then
G1 - he keeps REB+FOW +irrelevant, I discard FoW play into REB, has has just lands but draws into CB with untapped fetch, I go for it, for DR it shows a land, I proceed, he shuffles (only a 2 stops me now) and again a land ends it...
G2 - I keep a landless possible T1 with Probe or T2 with discard and draw a land like Turn 6.. while he beats me with a Clique, I play on to see his deck and hope for Extripate to see it all, I don't draw it but make sure he sees a Notion Thief I will SB out
G3 - I Needle his SDT early, the game gets longer, but he has nothing relevant I do not discard or Decay... I contemplate going for it but decide not to as he represents a CS with 2 islands untapped, next turn he Ponders and plays a Top, leaving just 1 open, so I think he has SP, I go for it, he tries to flip his Top - I point at Needle and he dies, obv. he had CS in hand and FoW on Top...
    SB: -DR/CR (draw/play) -2LP -2SDT -Mire -Ponder -GP -Duress +2Needle +Extripate +Tropical Island +3AD +2Pyroblast +Notion Thief (not quite sure why I did that G2)

Tomas is joking we can finaly play together... hell no I hope for an ANT mirror - I'm sure I remembered all combo deck players on top 40 tables

High Tide (Top 16 Roberto Libanore - lost to very good Dredge player there) 1:2
huge bald guy in violet shirt and violet sleeves, how comes I haven't seen him around? I have no idea but my tip is S+T, he starts
G1 - island, GP, Preordain go, Omnitell then?... I get to GP and see altered Hightides, Meditate, Dig Through Time, FoW and something, a Swansong? (he plays them MD, these are comical vs Storm, he can't really counter anything effectively the whole match)... I'm so happy playing against Tide after all, I have overload of discard and Top to find them... Now I make a calculated rick/mistake... he has Meditate, High Tide and Candelabra in hand... i have 2 asditional discard spells on Top, IT+DR+LP in my hand... I think that if he doesn't draw a Spiral naturaly I check him twice while digging and I can hardly lose, or I can burn a Petal and discard again... I should have thought it through better, he has more outs in consecutive turns... I pass he topdecks a Spiral and kills me
G2 - I mull 6 and keep something that makes Thoughtseize + 8 Goblins T2, I think he can't kill me before T3 or have an answer if he MD Echoing Truth... Thoughtseize reveals just 1 land Hightides and cantrips and he dies
G3 - around T5 I see his hand - 2BS 2FoW, I have just 1 therapy and possible Therpy into FoW proof next turn, so I pass - he has sick endstep, both BS and Dig, I get the feeling this doesn't go well... in untaps, Turnabouts like there's no tomorrow, double Spirals and BFreeze me, Pyro is no help and I get a Swan afterall =)
SB: -LP, -ToA, -Swamp -Grim? +Extirpate +Notion Thief +2Pyroblast

this player was great, played well a cool altered deck in a field of Miracles, I wish him the best, DiG looked sick in that list... Thomas is perfect 5:0 as always, Martin gets a draw - good strategy - now he finaly gets to to face all the Miracles

    Manaless Dredge 2:1
a Russian, looking serious, I guess some Delver deck, I win the roll
G1 - I keep a standard hand, he draws and discards a Phantasmagorian... hell yeah... BS -> discard and he dumps his hand in resp but doesn't get a chance to dredge...
G2 - I mull and he starts Leyline of the Void - reveal 2 Chancelor of the Annex - I play a Ponder into it and Therapy away 3! Chancellors next turn.. I feel pretty good about 4x Timewalk, IT for a DR, unfortunately my Grim Tutor gets unmasked - +2 timewalks... I get 1 more timewalk thanks to dicard but my deck fucks up and I'm unable to find a Tutor and lose to Ichorid beats when he can't kill me quick due to Needled Phantasmagorian... pretty retarded game
G3 - he gets to start and opens with Leyline... I timewalk few times, Needle a Phanzasmagorian and start to get pretty nervous, I'm not sure if he gets to dredge or not but I Extirpate his Stinkweed he discarded first, then topdeck IT-> Ad Nauseam in time, tripple check and win... my opp does not look very happy
SB: -LP, -PIF, -ToA, -Swamp - +Ad Nauseam +2Needle +Extirpate

    Burn 2:0
once again a friendly italian, I start to like those Italians, I know he was sitting next to me around round 3 or 4 - which feels like eternity due to rounds lenght, I reduce it to Burn or S+T while shuffling, I start
G1 - GP reveals Burn, no Eidolon, he does not draw it and dies T3 after my long thinking I had to apologize for - I really did not want to screw up the Tutor chain - i had 3 CR 3IT DR in hand and had to make sure threshold and searches go in the right order into ToA for 20
G2 - I keep GP ->12 Goblins... he starts with Relic of Progenitus, GP reveals me another LED = T1 PiF kill ... he takes it well and claims table 10 is his unluck place, he sat there 2 times at the same chair and lost both
SB: -Duress -USea -Grim -SDT +2CoV +2 Needle (I remember he was talking about relic when he sat besides me)

Thomas is perfect, got dragged to feature match area by judges after he complained about organization... Martin got his worst - paired against the High Tide guy who somehow drew with Miracles, Svaca lost to a inovative UWR list with Geist, TC and no RIP the same way Igor did round before (SB Golgari charm vs no targets)... there are about 4 Storm players around my table.. come on! this is gonna be a win and in, the tournament got cut to 9R and top 16 due to lenght problems

    4C Deathblade (top8/16 Gabriele Tocchi) 1:2
no storm... I saw this guy before but dunno, I think about some Delver, Esper or Miracles...
    G1 - T1 12 Goblins.. and GP reveals Deatblade
I really do not know what to SB, I hate this MU the most I get swayed be CoV a little, If I hadn't have it, it would have been much easier... no I recall he played with Tomas around R5 and I saw some Extraction
G2 - I lose to T2 MM naming Infernal tutor when I have a T2 kill, no bounce/Massacre encountered I get to see RiP and Liliana
G3 - we both mull 6, I don't want to go to 5 - so I keep a semi decent Top, GP+Therapy, Pyro, something - he has Liliana, MM, DRS, I opt to discard his DRS , he insta topdecks another one and I know I lost, counter MM, and get locked by DRS+Liliana, I do not have Ad Nauseam in the deck anymore and even if I had I don't get a chance to play it, I have a chance to get the game longer with CoV+STD+EtW LED interaction but he correctly goes for Liliana ultimate instead of discard and I'm done...
SB: -? +Ad Nauseam +2Needle +2CoV +2Pyroblast both times different mix of these I do not remember, he had too diferentiated hate, I really do not know how to SB against it

this deck is my Nemesis after GP Paris yet again I really can't feel better than random against it, they can have anything (and my opp had very varied SB of course), in my perception it's a pile of shit with no concept just "best" cards jammed together - it's frustating knowing Sawatarix would have certainly won (might be a tax for my version of the deck), Martin losses too - Goblins w Bloodmoon

    Merfolk with CotV 2:1
I have no idea what he plays, he starts
G1 - he CotV 1 T2 and I really do not get much chance to play I have an attempt which is soft to everything and gets countered... I'm pretty down after this, I look left and right and I'm surronded with Enchantress, Burn and Elves on Manaless (my previous Opp) UR and more Elves
G2 - I set up a in hand 2 ToA PiF situation but he topdecks a Phantasmal Image and copies a Cursecatcher, I start with rituals, no response, I know about his Negate and have just 1R, so ToA for 22 does not work because I can pay just 1, so I have to blind flip a 0 manasource with a Top or spin it and find a discard, which I do and PiF him out... he shows me a Relic in hand
G3 - he CotV 1 I Decay it EoT and PiF kill him
SB: -LP -Grim -PiF -Ponder +2Needle +2AD

All my friends won last round, Tomas drew last 2 rounds after 7:0, I'm 18th with 2nd best breakers among 21 points... Martin is ~ 39, Svaca ~50, Igor right behind... decent standard for our team
I pick up my beaten prices - 1 of 4 foothills looking at least Ex.. seriously? at lest english, 2 are signed - Alex__ and Al____ ... a price for 24th - Karakas is worth more than this in my country unless it's beaten as hell

I watch the top 16 - Tomas almost lost to a russian Ant guy who wasn't playing exactly tight... next to him spanish Canadian Build with TC and Pyromancers wrecked Miracles beautifuly as well as typicaly looking Dredge guy with pink playmat defeated the High Tide... I have no more energy to watch last Miracles mirror, this way the tournament ends at 6am and I leave. Tomas walked into our room around 3 am explained top 8 split prices and those who are interested play out for glory at 10 am

    Sunday

half of the top 8 did not show up so Tomas plays the Dredge and his friend Angelo a Miracles pseudo Mirror (vs. Losset version), Tomas shows some pretty tight play losing G1, than winning nerve wrecking G2 on mull 5 decking his opp, and winning G3 again... both players played excellent, this and finals should be on coverage as a prime example of brilliant MTG, no weekly SCG bullshit.. is it? OF COURSE NOT!! stream last rounds of legacy, ignore the TOP8 - italian style, they have like 5 spectators feat. judges and an Italian has to record the finals on his fuckin phone! I hope he uploads it somewhere... Angelo won his mirror, while our heroes played pure 75 on 75 mirror in the finals a technician was calmly setting up the camera for some Vintage/Modern sidevent action... the finals were real chess game, where Tomas won G1, Angelo found his 1 outer EE to Tomas angels G2 (EtE is normaly sided out in theory of the Mirror match in this school of Miracles both players prefer) and won G3 thx to Flusterstorm winning decisive counterbattle...
so congrats to Angelo, Ovino Champion! I'm sure both finalist will elaborate on their stories later

    Outro
Svaca is really dissatisfied with his performance and decides to play his BUGr deck ported to Vintage (he played 5 vintage tournaments in his life and won 3 of them with it), because 50% vintage players simply suck, and joins a car of czech vintage players if he's doing good, he was 3-0 when I left and hasn't flied with us... and obv. top 8ed where he lost quicky due to manascrew... afternoon we meet with our host Igor his wife and child, accompany german guys for a snack on the top of a building next to the Duomo, and then hastly depart for the airport where Tomas nearly lost his ID and phone, 6:2 against his BUG on the plane and midnight arrival my Prague home...

    - I'm quite satisfied with MD, STD works great, natural fit,
    - still do not like CoV (my SB does not support it without overboarding)
    - Krosan Grip is interesting tech I have to try out
    - Needle in the SB is overall boss - and both finalists agreed Needle it is a powerful plan vs Miracles...
    - I cast the card Ad Nauseam once in the whole weekend

I'm not very satisfied with my play and in retrospect my placing, If you'd like to be really cynical this report can be R1-R4 lucky, R5 misplay, R6-R7 byes, R8 stupid, R9 lucky... but you have to go forward to your luck, someone said there are bad and less bad players in magic...

to say something good about organization
    - pairings online were perfect, minutes earlier then printed were pinned
    - vendors? - you have 3 overpriced shops at a legacy GP that have nothing, you get like 10-15 private seller tables overflowing with binders, pimp and beta in Ovino!! incredible - I guess it's because the organizer doesn't care about cash trades between players and offers a table for a small fee for shops and sellers...
Despite understaffed terribad organization (ok reporter crash was not orgs fault), I might go there next year If I have time to, for me Italians as people and players were pleasant surprise compared to better organized french BoM events, the flight was cheap and fast, excellent affordable hotel nearby, many restaurants open till midnight and food simply fantastic

btw. You might meet Me, Tomas and others at similar 10 000 Euro event in Prague in November

Congrats on your finish. (Shame that Tom had such a miserable luck. Btw, is he on Source?) Interesting build, I miss your signature mix of ANT+Burn deck, but yeah. I guess it was a right call seeing how you met zero Thalias all day long.
Why are you so disappointed with Chain of Vapor? I thought that it's a versatile answer against anything possible and as such, it should be always kept in sb even as a mere one-of.

But reading the report makes me a bit more unsettled. Honestly I'm more and more realizing how this all stuff is passing me by; it's 2003 all over again when I quitted visiting concerts... Too much time and will consuming, something like a partial job with official journeys... etc., etc., enter the usual tirade.
I'm going to feel like a stranger in this community even more. And that's how it should be.

If things go well, we may meet on Thursday, but frankly, I think I'll wait until the post-Ovino dust settles.

Drawing lots was not practiced enough the 8th round was real misfortune

CoV - I can't fit it in my SB (where I try to be universal otherwise) without tendency to overboard in every relevant MU... I might be to afraid to have soft answer for hard threats but outside of Maverick and probably Deatblade - where you just jam 3 into Ad Nauseam build and call it a day I don't like it (and jap foils are expensive you know ;)

About Tom - I guess you know now

I feel the opposite, these tournaments are why you play Magic //gets me to understand why someone wants to be Pro in a children game... you travel with friends, make new ones across nations, discuss with someone who understand your passion about the game outside of internetz and finaly - show your abilities, play unknown opponents at "high" stakes level ... for me occasional large tournaments like this are more meaningful than hours of reading, constructing and lgs play (if you take out the social parts)

I'm going today, I have some family session next Thursday

That top8 versus miracle was really one of the best match i ever played, rarely you see someone prepared as your buddy, i was so happy even if i lost.
You earned it! I appreciate people who know their deck and MUs and I'm glad Dredge is not dead, you don't see matches like that every day...

Well, not to be Debbie Downer, but I feel the exact opposite. Long tournaments are boring even without the unexpected delays, long trips are boring as well, discussing the same subject for hours brings me beyond edge of sanity, desultory skills are overrated and finally prizes suck compared to the costs, see the breakfasted Foothills. I guess that it takes a lot of austerity and force of will to play in the competitive settings.

I stayed at home, I'm waking up at 4:30 AM with a twelve-hour shift awaiting me.
