GPT Win with GB Nic Fit - Lincoln, NE 12-1-12

This tale begins on a fateful Friday night with our hero driving around the great city of Omaha. While making casual conversation with the beautiful woman in the passenger seat, our hero's mobile phone did it ring.

"Hold on one second I have to take this," he said apologetically. After a short conversation, he hung up the phone and turned to the woman. "We have to make a little detour, this won't take long."

Our hero put the car in gear and hit the gas pedal. In and out of traffic, all the way to the other end of the city they sped. They arrived at a humble abode somewhere in the middle of Omaha. The streets were silent and the stars could not be seen.

"If you don't want to freeze, you may want to come inside with me, my friend likes to talk alot," he said as he stepped out of the car. The woman obliged and walked with him to the front door. "Watch out for the dogs, they'll love you to death," he warned. He turned back towards the door and rang the bell. They stood as they listened to it echo throughout the inside of the house.

"Come in!" came the call from the other side. Our hero grasped the doorknob, turned it, and pushed the door inwards. He and the woman were greeted by a couple too happy canines bearing teeth and slobber. Our hero settled the dogs down and introduced them to the woman before they made their way downstairs where the houseowners and their two other guests did they gather. Introductions were made all around as the woman had never before met these companions of our hero.

"Do you have any Flooded Strands I can borrow for tomorrow?" one of the companions, Mikaela asked.

Our hero rammaged through his backpack and procured them for her. "What do you need these for?" he asked.

"There's a Legacy GPT for Denver tomorrow in Lincoln!" the other companion, Brandon chimed in. "I figured you would have been one to know, being the Legacy guy. It's just Mikaela and I going, we have plenty of room in our car if you want to tag along."

    "YES PLEASE!"

After some discussion about life, the universe, and everything, our hero and the woman left the house and enjoyed a few more activities before dropping her off at home. On the return to his residence, our hero pondered on his possible deck choices. He went to bed still completely undecided. As he tossed and turned on the couch, he finally drifted off into a deep, long sleep.......

I awoke with a start; noisy neighbors will be noisy. I left for work at 5:30 AM. I make my way through the short workday mostly thinking about the upcoming tournament. 10 AM came about, and I bolted out the door and sped back home to shower and gather my stuff. I tell my roommate Kirby (RandomGestures) about the GPT and he asks if there's room for one more (there is). We hopped in my car and head over the bridge to meet Brandon and Mikaela for our spur of the moment trip to Lincoln. On the way, I failed to convince Kirby to play Manaless Dredge over TES, helped Mikaela flesh out her 75 for her Miracles deck and decided on my trusty GB Nic Fit for my weapon of choice.

We arrive at HobbyTown USA with no problems, register our lists and are off to the races! For those interested, the list!

I'm going to apologize in advance. This was awhile ago, the details are a little hazy but I will do my best.

Round 1 - Mikaela Mielke with U/W Miracles

We obviously travel to play with the members of our car. No need to run the tournament at a kitchen table.

G1- I Abrupt Decay a Counterbalance, land a Thrun which forces her to Terminus. I land a Deed and sit on it for awhile. She starts Vendillion Cliqueing me to death. I float a Maelstrom Pulse on top for the inevitable Entreat the Angels. I pop the Deed on my turn, she untaps and miracles an Entreat the Angels for 4 dudes. I untap and flip the Pulse I had in the waiting. Treetop Villages and Garruk clean up.

Sideboard: -4 Veteran Explorer -2 Cabal Therapy -1 Diabolic Intent -1 Pernicious Deed -1 Scavenging Ooze +3 Carpet of Flowers +1 Cranial Extraction +1 Memoricide +2 Thoughtseize +2 Duress

G2- She leads with a Top and I come back with a Duress and nab her Counterbalance that my hand would have lost to. We durdle for a bit and I don't remember much else but towards the end of the game she lands a Jace. As we enter extra turns, I ignore Jace and go after her low life total with Thrun and Treetop and finish her on turn 3.

Round 2 - Mark Simard with Junk

G1- He gets a well balanced draw and gets there on the back of enough pressure without overextending, discard and removal. I had a pretty lackluster draw and drew mono Cabal Therapies towards the end of the game.

Sideboard: -2 Hymn to Tourach +1 Damnation +1 Nihil Spellbomb

G2- I do what Nic Fit does. Killed all his dudes. Multiple times. Thrun kills him.

G3- Didn't finish in time but ground the game out to where he had nothing and I had Top, Thragtusk and Treetop for a two turn clock. Couldn't close it before turns and he wouldn't scoop.

Round 3 - Kirby Kaufman (RandomGestures) with The Epic Storm.

Again, could have played this one back home, and we do quite often. Whatever.

G1- I know what he's on and am forced to mulligan my first two hands. I keep Deathrite Shaman and 4 lands. Fortunately he kept a slower one. He was forced to use his only fetch to find an Underground Sea early on and couln't do much. Shaman eats cantrips and hits him for about 6. I find a Therapy and name Burning Wish. Hit one and flash it back for triple Rite of Flame. I land a Thragtusk the turn after and kill him in two turns.

Sideboard: -1 Acidic Slime -2 Abrupt Decay -2 Maelstrom Pulse -1 Pernicious Deed -1 Grave Titan -1 Primeval Titan -2 Garruk, Primal Hunter +2 Duress +2 Thoughtseize +3 Extirpate +1 Memoricide +1 Cranial Extraction +1 Nihil Spellbomb

G2- Kept a sick hand with lands, Thoughtseize, Therapy, Explorer and Hymn. He kills me turn 1

G3- He can't beat all of the discard!!

    Round 4 - ID into Top 4

Semifinals - Chris Van Conett with Elves

G1- He is unfamiliar with Nic Fit. He dumps his hand. I Deed him and kill him with a giant Scavenging Ooze.

Sideboard: -1 Acidic Slime -1 Veteran Explorer -2 Garruk, Primal Hunter +2 Thoughtseize +1 Golgari Charm +1 Damnation

G2- He plays a turn on Pithing Needle. He names Top. I awkwardly draw one. I rip his hand apart with Therapies and Damnation him. Ooze gets there again

Finals - Brandon Downs with Dredge

Did it! Played everbody in the car! Could have hosted this tournament in our apartment!

G1- He kills me on turn two after my turn one Deathrite Shaman

Sideboard: -1 Acidic Slime -2 Abrupt Decay -2 Hymn to Tourach -1 Liliana of the Veil +3 Extirpate +1 Nihil Spellbomb +1 Cranial Extraction +1 Memoricide

Details about the next couple games are pretty hazy but I ground him out with Extirpates and cleaned up with Scavenging Ooze and Deathrite Shaman.

Good enough for 1st place, some product, and 3 byes at GP Denver! Hope to see all of you there!!

    As always thanks for reading!!

And it wouldn't be too hard to protect him in counter-heavy build.
