Commune seems worse than siege or chandra. I really like siege in standard and could see playing it. It could also be really cute with welder. I really like chandra and it's playing a similar role.

hi mapson !
it's a long time I'm hesitating to play assemble the legion, and I just saw you played it main deck. What's your feelig about this slot ? 5 mana ccm isn't too expensive to play ? was it very relevant ? which deck was easier to fight against cause of tis card ?
Had to post this. Apparently, a "Blood Moon Tetrad" is a bad omen. Let's hope that goes more for our opponents.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/a...alypse-debate/
Also, Mapson I'm also interested in your multiple one-of alt. win cons. How are those working out for you? Why in the main board vs SB? Curious inclusions to say the least, although I also run one Chandra main and get behind the thought process.
I played it maindeck because I was expecting plenty of Miracles. I was wrong but I was happy with it. It was more relevant this past weekend at the Legacy IQ. Especially against rug. And its fine as a five mana spell. It basically wins.
I want to try a really trolly deck with 4 assembles, fast mana, tutors, and smokestacks. No bearing on this thread but want to share
Hi everyone, i'm usually just a reader and not a writer in this forum. Saturday I won a 72-people tournement (Eternal Clash) in northern Germany (Flensburg) with Imperial Painter and decided to write a little report.
At tournaments I usually play DnT (almost a year now). A few month ago I wanted a legacy combo deck which also has different angles to attack from. Painter was the perfect choice. During Treasure Cruise-Meta I didn't played the deck, because... yeah, the lack of fun you have when someone plays ancestral recall. After the bannings I started testing again and with the list below I had really good results:
Creatures (14)
1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
1 Magus of the Moon
1 Spellskite
2 Goblin Welder
2 Simian Spirit Guide
3 Imperial Recruiter
4 Painter’s Servant
Instants (8)
1 Enlightened Tutor
3 Red Elemental Blast
4 Pyroblast
Enchantments (4)
4 Blood Moon
Planeswalkers (2)
2 Koth of the Hammer
Artifacts (13)
3 Ensnaring Bridge
3 Lotus Petal
3 Sensei’s Divining Top
4 Grindstone
Lands (19)
1 Great Furnace
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Plateau
3 Arid Mesa
3 City of Traitors
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Mountain
Sideboard (15)
2 Sudden Shock
2 Ethersworn Canonist
3 Containment Priest
1 Chandra, Pyromaster
1 Pithing Needle
1 Phyrexian Revoker
2 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Viashino Heretic
1 Phyrexian Processor
1 Circle of Protection: Red
I really like playing the deck as a control deck, but the white splash is far too good (especially sb) to cut it. This is all from my memory, because my notes are just bad (if someone realizes a mistake, feel free to correct me). So here's what happened:
Round 1 - Against Calvin with Miracles (2:1)
Game 1
I think it's a tough mu, but I really like playing aganist miracles, because it's never a boring game. I lose the dice roll and keep a land heavy hand with 4 lands, top and two blasts. The game is over really quickly. My draws are almost lands only, altough I have the top and fetches. I counter two counterbalance with my blasts, but an entreat in his fifth turn is game over. Good start...
Game 2
+1 Chandra, +1 Phyrexian Processor, +1 Needle // -1 Magus of the Moon, -1 Enlightened Tutor, -1 Petal
This game is quite long, with him killing/putting under the library my Painter several times. But no Top for him this game =). At one point I resolve Koth and start attacking him for 4 each turn. He casts Stoneforge while being at 8 Life and searching his Batterskull. He takes another hit from my mountain and Koth's ultimate (from turn before) is enough to win the game.
Game 3
10 minutes left. We both have no top, but he has a counterbalance and I don't have any blasts. But I have the combo on my hand. My next two draws are blasts (damn, too late -.-). One minute before turns, I try to blast the counterbalance end of his turn. He triggers, but only a tundra on top (yeah, there is my luck). Then he forces my first blast, I blast his force, he forces my second blast. Now he is empty handed and tapped out, with me having the painter in hand and grindstone in play, but only 4 mana available. I topdeck a land -> my game! Nice =)
Round 2 - Against Amin with Reanimator (2:1)
Game 1
I start this round. Before we start he shows me Chancellor of the Annex (my first spell get's countered, if I don't pay one extra mana) and I'm thinking he's on Dredge... But in his turn he draw's says go and discards Griselbrand, which get's reanimated the next turn. My hand is just crap against his monsters so I die quickly. I only saw Badlands and swamps and no blue card at all, so I decide to board out Moons.
Game 2
-2 Koth, -4 Blood Moon, -1 Magus of the Moon // +3 Containment Priest, +2 Thorn of Amethyst, +1 Needle, +1 Revoker
The only card he casts is an Faithless Looting, discarding lands... I have a turn 3 kill.
Game 3
He plays Unmask on me his first turn, discarding my Bridge. But I have a Recruiter in hand. Then he has a turn 2 Ashen Rider which attacks me down to 5 life before I can geht my Bridge back in with my Welder (searched this one with my Recruiter). The next turn I have Containment Priest and he's quite disappointed when he sees it. Then it's just draw go for a while, until he hardcasts Sire of Insanity. I already have Painter at this point and several blasts in my hand. So I blast a needle on his Side (Grindstone) and his lands, before discarding my hand. without any lands he has to discard everything he draws until I find my Grindstone.
Round 3 - Against Peer with UWR Stoneblade (1: 1 :1)
Game 1
Peer's a good friend of mine and we decide to draw, before we start playing. So we both can still take a lose and make it to top 8 (I know it's not the smartest move but it worked well this time =)). I can't remember this game very well, but I think a Bloodmoon gets rid of his white sources and I counter the bolt on my painter after activating Grindstone -> my game =)
Game 2
-1 Magus of the Moon, -1 Enlightened Tutor, -1 Jaya Ballard // +1 Needle, +1 Chandra Pyromaster, +1 Sudden Shock
Game 2 I keep a hand with a turn three Koth, which gets him down to 6 life and then gets needled just before i can ultimate him Koth got bolted few turns before). My Ensnaring Bridge does good work against his creatures, but a Jace on his side which is fatesealing me, wins the game. He disrupts the combo several times with his 8-10 removal spells (4 swords, 4 bolts, 2 snapcaster mages).
Game 3
Game 3 is really long an grindy. I attack him for 3 a turn with Ape and Recruiter. I have an Ensnaring Bridge and Moon, so he's quite limited in what he can do (one island and one plains). But nevertheless he disrupts the combo whenever I have it. At some point he's at 3 Life from my beatdown. I draw Suddenshock, look at top three cards with top and find my Chandra. I shock him end of turn play Chandra and ping him to death (happened in 5th extra turn). I would have won this one, but I get my win later anyway =)
Round 4 - Against Christopher with DnT (2:1)
Game 1
Game 1 is pretty short. I get killed by Stoneforge, Mother, Revoker (on Grindstone) and Sword of Fire and Ice. He's playing the version with 4 Leonin Arbiters and 4 Ghost Quarters, 4 Wastelands and 4 Ports, so I keep in my Moons because this version is even more agressive against our manabase and if they didn't have Vial you sometimes get them with their greedy manabase.
Game 2
-1 Koth, -1 Enlightened Tutor, -1 Magus of the Moon, -3 REB // +1 Needle, +2 Sudden Shock, +1 Viashino Heretic, +1 Chandra, +1 Containment Priest
I have a turn 3 kill, with him having nothing.
Game 3
Again a turn 3 kill, which gets interrupted with Path to Exile. I play another Painter the following turn and kill him.
Round 5 - Against Felix with Lands (2:0)
Game 1
Maybe the best mu in magic history? Preboard its just ridiculous... I have a turn 3 kill, with him loaming a bit...
Game 2
+1 Needle, +1 Revoker, +1 Viashino Heretic // -2 REB, -1 Koth
I have a turn 4 kill. My combo is online by turn 2, but because he has 3 ports I need another fetchland/Petal/Monkey, which I find in time. (I have a plateau in hand but he has the wasteland)
Round 6 - Against Max with BUG Delver (2:0)
Game 1
This game is really close. I have the combo like 3 times but he decays painter everytime. At one point I have top, lands and Enlightened Tutor in hand on 7 life, with him having 2 Goyfs, 1 Bob, 1 Delver and 1 DRS. I search for Bridge resolve it and get drained by DRS. The last possible turn, I find Moon + Blast in my top 3 cards. Cast Moon, he forces, me drawing a card with top and blasting his Force. Moon resolves, with just 2 lands in graveyards. Hadn't expected to win this one with this board state...
Game 2
-2 Koth, -1 Jaya Ballard // +1 Needle or Revoker (I know he's playing Lilli), +2 Sudden Shock
I keep an Hand with 2 Lands, 1 Petal, 3 Moon effects and one sudden shock. He plays a delver which I Shock after flipping with Ponder I think. I draw a Blast, but no more lands or mana sources, so I decide to just go for it. He Brainstorms in response to my Moon (obviously he has no decay) and didn' find Force or Daze. So it's my game... can be that easy sometimes =)
Round 7 - Against Torge with ANT (ID)
We draw into top 8 with me as best seated player. Nice luck I get the ANT player in an irrelevant round. We play one round just for fun, which I win... O.o... Must be one of the days nothing's going wrong.
Top 8
Quarterfinal - Against Christain with Miracles (2:1)
Game 1
This game he has turn 2 CB and turn 3 Top. I had kept a land heavy hand with top, but just lands in my top 3 cards. An Entreat for 3 angels is game over.
Game 2
+1 Chandra, +1 Phyrexian Processor, +1 Needle // -1 Magus of the Moon, -1 Enlightened Tutor, -1 Petal
Early Blood Moon buys me some time, with him having just Tundras, Fetchlands and Top for a while. He Forces my Koth and I finish him with my combo, because the lack of multiple white sources on his side. He managed to get a plains and an island, but my Blast counters his STP.
Game 3
Again I have an early Blood Moon, with him keeping a very greedy hand with just one Tundra as only land. With his Top he gets two basic islands into play but no white sources, so the combo wins the game for me. After the game he shows me his hand of 2 STP and one Snapcaster and Councils Judgement.
Semifinal - Against Philip with Sneak-Show/Omnitell Hybrid-stuff (2:1)
Game 1
Game 1 is almost not winnable... Bridge and Koth are my friends here. I keep a hand with turn 2 Koth OTP (I think it can't get better...). Koth gets him down to 8 life then I get killed with Show and Tell into Omni into Burning Wish into Enter the Infinite into Burning Wish into Spiraling Embers... (against Spiraling Embers my Circle of Protection is a very good out post board )
Game 2
-4 Grindstone, -4 Blood Moon, -1 Magus of the Moon // +1 Needle, +1 Revoker, +1 Circle of Protection: Red, +1 Phyrexian Processor, +2 Ethersworn Canonist, +3 Containment Priest
I keep a very good hand with Jaya, Recruiter, Bridge, Blast and Lands. He don't have a fast combo kill and so I can get together my dudes for beatdown. He hasn't many lands so end of turn I start killing lands with Jaya and Painter in play. At the end he has one fetchland and dies to my beatdown.
Game 3
Again I have a very good hand (Canonist, Priest, Petal, 3 Blasts and Lands). Again no fast combo kill from him, so it's a draw go for a few turns until I can cast my Canonist with 2 blasts back up. After he has taken several hits from canonist I resolve Needle on Sneak Attack, which he topdecks and plays the turn after that (I had the Containment Priest anyway...). At some point he casts Show and Tell which I Blast and he can't counter back because of the Canonist. After me showing him 3 more Blasts he realizes he can't win anymore... After winning this mu, I guess everythings possible today. =)
Finals - Against Peer with UWR Stoneblade (2:0)
Game 1
Yep, again Peer. We made jokes about playing in Finals after the ID from round 3... Defenitly strange day...
This one is pretty short. I Moon him quite early and win by countering his Bolt on my Painter, after activating Grindstone.
Game 2
Boarding: Same as Round 3 I guess.
This one took really long and involved lot of removal on my Painter (he killed all 4 of them), Moons, Bridges, Top on my side and Stoneforege, Jitte, Batterskull, Jace on his side. I have 2 Grindstones and enough lands to activate both each turn. At one Point he starts fatesealing me with him having 31 cards left in his library. He also attacks a few turns through Bridge with giving his Stoneforge -1/-1 with jitte and then pump, but it's obvious that Jace and my milling are just faster than these hits. In the end I get ultimated by jace with 2 cards in my hand (so I have another 2 turns) and him having 7 cards left in is library. I draw my last card milling him during his upkeep for the win -> won through Jace's ultimate... quite nice =)
Thanks to the team behind the tournement. I had a great time!
The deck performed pretty good (like during the testing) and I wouldn't change anything in my 60, but maybe make room for another canonist, because this card is insane when it comes to winning counterwars in bad mu's or at beating Storm/Elves. Also Spellskite was always good when I had him. Although I didn't mentioned him, he always got sworded/decayed immediatly after playing (it really stresses opponents removal). Thanks for reading =)
@G le p
First, I will say welcome. Always good to get more input into the painter hive mind.
Second, I will honestly say congrats on winning a tournament through some relatively bad MUs. To get through miracles twice, reanimator, omnitell, D&T, and RWU stone blade is impressive.
So, on to your list... Somewhat similar to Mapson with multiple copies of alt win cons in your list. I'm a little curious about the processor in the board. Doesn't sound like you ever got to use it but has it been good in testing? Also, I am very interested in your 3 Containment priest, 2 canonist SB with no other grave hate. So, you basically completely disregard the grindstone combo when playing against something like sneak or omnitell. Interesting strategy.
Finally, why the CoP red? What MUs is that for? If it's burn and pyromancer decks, I can comfortably say that sphere is just better. Are you bringing it in for other reasons?
Thanks again for the report.

Also, I noted that you took out Magus in almost every MU except BUG. I've had the same experience and I'm starting to think its a SB card just for BUG, 12-post, other sol land decks (MUD) and maybe lands.

I've had the thought about magus in the board as well, but feel like that's only acceptable if you're running an extra e-tutor for an extra virtual copy of blood moon. Recruiter for Magus is so valuable, particularly if the game comes down to top-decking.
Ah, just skipping back a bit to Commune With Lava vs Outpost Siege / Chandra, Pyromaster discussion.
How about Coercive Portal? Colorless, 4 mana and DRAWS you an extra card on your turns.
Well, here's my $.02...
As for the first three, I think Chandra is by far the best option. You can use her the turn she comes into play. If she isn't dealt with she gains you consistent card advantage over multiple turns. Her second ability can affect creatures even without killing them (I have won games swinging past a Griselbrand that couldn't block) and her ultimate sometime (although rarely) has value. The only benefit of Siege is that it's searchable with tutor, but I can't imagine ever searching for it, other than maybe against Miracles.
As for Coercive portal, if it worked like Council's judgement where you ultimately had the choice of its effect, it would definitely be worth considering. Unfortunately the Nevy's disc effect would only work if both players voted for it. So no, I don't think the portal is playable. Also just remember, because we sometimes lean on ensnaring bridge a lot, drawing the card isn't necessarily better then just plying it off the top of the deck, especially if you have a top to manipulate the top of your deck.

With ensnaring bridge in our deck I often find exile drawing to be the correct way to go (miracles MU aside, kind of).
I have used all if chandra's abilities in high level play to great effect. The cannot block ability cannot be under stated as drude indicated. The plus ability can take over the game against somewhat difficult MU's like death and taxes, elves, or even pyromancer.
That being said out of the sideboard koth is a strong finisher for decks like sneak or miracles.
I'll echo support in the Chandra camp.
In drawn out G1's with Ensnaring Bridge and Jaya in play *cough* DnT *cough*. Chandra makes it easier to draw into an answer. Though I do side Chandra out against Miracles in favor of Koth as he is harder to answer.
"Unfortunately the Nevy's disc effect would only work if both players voted for it."
True, but the effect we however always will have, is the card draw. So basicly it's a colorless, tutorable and Welder-fetchable Outpost Siege, that draws instead of exiles. Chandra's +1 is indeed also relative, so wether she's to-go instead of Portal depends on how much you want draw over utility.
@G le p
I really like the addition of Phyrexian Processor, it sure brings back memories from it was in standard, now I read your report and I don't think you actually got to play it but if you did how much life would pay vs miracles?
Ive played a bit with Processor, and usually pay enough to end the game in 2 swings if it doesn't seem possible or safe to end it in one.
@ drude1
thank you. =)
I really like the processor against miracles. It was nice during testing and works as well as alternate win con against the bad mu like omni and sneak & show (although processor is a bit slow there and I just want him if I have enough bad things to board out). You're right I completely board out the combo against those mu, because our 2 card combo becomes a 3 card combo, still needing RIP or Relic. I think searching for 3 cards to kill another combo deck is just too slow, especially because these decks combo pretty fast.
With Magus, you're right. I thought about putting him into the SB. There aren't many mu were I want him post board. On the other hand, sometimes it's nice to tutor for him. Maybe I try him in the SB the next weeks.
In the slot of CoP I usually use either CoP, Sphere or Warmth. I have chosen CoP because I had good experience with it in Dnt, but I see you're point that Sphere is just better in Imperial Painter. What do you think about Warmth? It's faster but you don't have that much synergy (compared to Sphere) with Painter naming red.
@ lilevo
The amount of life I pay depends on the board state (I think it's a really hard decision because an entreat from the top can just be a loose if you'd payed too much life...). Under Bridge I would only pay 4 life. So I can still attack (and trade with angels!), reduce my handsize to 3 and making it impossible for him to attack with angels.
If miracles player is lowlife already, you pay enough to kill him with one to two swings.

Just finished up a small 8 man tourney (3-0'd) And wow I played with Uba mask for my first time ever and holy cow I think it did a lot of work. Now I could be bias towards how that card specifically preformed but it was great. Help make Griselbrand's draw seven pretty lame and stopes enter the infinite/Omnitell. I can't say it won me the games but it added that extra layer of security while going for win. (Did awesome job with a bridge in play)
*sidenote want playing iPainter per say, simply now in the Uba Mask camp. Plus being on stream was awesome as no one knew what it did and had to read it so many times.
PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS THIS DECK ON THIS THREAD. It's here due to request only.
