Already my memory is not so great with a few of these matches. I any of my opponents read this thing, forgive me if i get any of these details wrong.
Also I apoligize in advance for so few details on the delver match. I was too busy trying not to die to remember the details.
I'll leave a link to my decklist on tappedout in the signature. Feel free to ask me deck related questions there.
Round 1: Grixis Delver
I recognize my opponent from another tournament. Nice dude.
Game 1: I get smashed by a fast delver hand while I drew jank.
SB: +1 pithing needle, -1 worm harvest
Game 2: I got there with a marit lage. don't remember too well how.
Game 3: Drawing a blank here. I think i made a witch defensively at some point against an angler and some other dudes and also had a chasm to protect me through the turn.
Round 2: Bug Thopter Sword
Game 1: I get to see a basic island, basic swamp, sword of the meek, and a call the bloodline (super spicy) before I assemble a T3 DD + thespian's stage.
SB: +1 pithing needle, +1 sylvan library, +1 Bojuka Bog, +2 Krosan Grip
-2 Wasteland, -3 (?)
Game 2: Loam, Punishing fire, and glacial chasm all get surgically extracted. My opponent also landed 2 pithing needles, one naming thespian's stage, the other naming dark depths. without a whole lot to do, I had to maze some of his guys every turn while i kept drawing lands that didn't seem to do a whole lot. At 2 life and no way of surviving for an extra turn without making some blockers, I top deck a gamble. I gamble for worm harvest and get to keep it. I ghost quarter my own tabernacle to let me keep my guys and I proceeded to make 11 worms then 12 worms off the retrace. The next turn i got to cast it twice, retracing with the dead lands in my hand (riftstone portal fixed mana really well for this situation) the first time getting countered, the second time making 14 worms, then i start swinging and close out in 2 turns.
Round 3: RG Lands mirror Match!
After the match, we have a chat and I found out this person is a fellow member of the source. Always cool to meet other lands players![]()
Game 1: My opponent mulligans deep, and I feel terrible. I keep an ideal hand and do lands things.
SB: +1 pithing needle, +1 sylvan library, +1 primeval titan, +1 bojuka bog, +1 Karakas, +2 Krosan grip
-2 Punishing fire, -2 Maze of ith, -1 Grove of the burnwillows, -1 Glacial chasm, -1 (?)
Game 2: Early on, i get bojuka bogged with my life from the loam in my graveyard. I end up finding another one and ghost quarter and go to town on his mana. We wish each other well and I hope he wins out to make it to top 8
Round 4: ID
Round 5: ID
TOP 8:
Round 1: RG Lands Grudge Match
My friend from round 3 broke into top 8 and we got to play one of the most ridiculous games of magic I've ever experienced.
Game 1: I did not run bojuka bog in the main for this tournament and my opponent showed me just how good it was. Despite being on the play, I got demolished.
SB:
SB: +1 pithing needle, +1 sylvan library, +1 primeval titan, +1 bojuka bog, +1 Karakas, +2 Krosan grip
-2 Punishing fire, -2 Maze of ith, -1 Grove of the burnwillows, -1 Glacial chasm, -1 (?)
Game 2: Both of us find explorations and we fight to keep eachother's boards and graveyards in check. I think my opponent was in better shape than me since he found a wasteland and port first. We end up in a board state that was something like this:
Opponent has wasteland, karakas, thespian's stage, rishadan port, and some other lands.
I have 3 thespian's stages that are copied forests, a rishadan port, and a bunch of mana producing lands and 2 dark depths in hand. I had to do some counting to see if i could stage 3 times and port in the same turn. after verifying that i could, I played Dark Depths and passed the turn.
My opponent kept most of his lands untapped going into his end step when i started making moves. Our battle over my DD went something like this:
I tap his karakas with my port.
He floats mana with it.
I copy DD with stage #1.
He lets it resolve.
I sac the original DD.
My thespian's stage thats a DD checks for counters.
My opponent responds by wastelanding it.
I respond by using thespian's stage #2 to copy thespian's stage #1 (thats a DD).
My opponent responds by using his rishadan port to tap down thespian's stage #3.
I respond by activating stage #3 to copy his karakas.
There can only be one marit lage in this fight
Game 3: To be honest, i was pretty fried from game 2 so my memory is a bit poor in this game, maybe @djxstream could jog my memory here. I dredged 3 thespian's stages on turn 2 or 3 but when i went to loam all of them back, my opponent crop rotated for bojuka bog and wiped them all out. I think ghost quarter helped me pick off all of his colored sources and I got to enough mana to cast worm harvest and made 7 tokens, then some more on the next turn to close it out. the rest is pretty fuzzy.
I end up splitting top 4 and go home with a mana crypt for edh.
I played one of the other top seeds to see how the finals would have worked out and i lost to grixis delver in 3.
Overall, I was pleased with the deck. I used run the list with abrupt decays but after playing with straight RG, I didn't miss them.
Of note:
I played ghost quarter and Worm harvest to hedge against miracles instead of abrupt decay. i still haven't gotten to see how effective they will be in that matchup, but both cards over performed in my other matches during the day that i think they are worth keeping in the main going forward.
Riftstone portal helped me hit the GGG of worm harvest in more than one game. i think they come as a package here.
Not once did molten vortex do anything (counter magic + abrupt decays). It could probably come out for the 4th punishing fire.
