If you're playing a blue deck, prepare to deal with the THREATENER, as he'll be playing merfolk. I did pack his sideboard with super-secret tech for the meta. (and not the unhinged card.)

    Psyched.

The loam list was 4 color. Black for thoughtseize and confidant as well as white for swords.

Also, white weenie. Just awesome, lol.

He gets a token turn 5, Gets Narcomoeba off a dredge, and brings ichorid in, and Flashes back dread return and gets Hypnotist, with 2 more zombies from the one bridge. I discard a hand of pulse, regrowth, BtQ, damnation, and a land. 5 Lands out, I topdeck the one of HAUNTING ECHOES! WOO!

    Round 5, game 2
Affinity - Turn 2 Hymn Master of E and myr enforcer, turn 3 deed, turn 4 pop deed, and turn 5 HAUNTING ECHOES. Took out all creatures cept Diciple and all his G/B/U Mana sources.

Re: MEANDECK OPEN: October 25, 2009!!! (Columbus, OHIO)

Awesome tournament yesterday! Here is a report based on what little notes I took during my games. I apologize in advance if I forgot your name or specific plays.

Round 1 – Jacob (Team Lucksack member) playing U/G CB Control

I win the roll and lead off with a first turn Bob off a Mox Diamond. KotR follows a turn later. He resolves a Vedalken Shackles, but by the time it became active, ‘Goyf had joined the mix to seal the deal.

This game is much slower. I keep a hand with Wastelands green mana and Goyf. He Forced and Spell Snared most of my relevant spells until I was finally able to stick a KotR. I wished for Chainer’s Edict to kill his only creature and swing twice for lethal.

In general I don’t like this matchup. I believe Jacob had bad draws as I never saw a CB or very many ponders/brainstorms. KotR is really, really good because of its ability to get around Shackles, CB and Spell Snare.

    (1-0)

Round 2 – Eric (Media314r8 from Team Lucksack) playing Faerie Stompy

These games were pretty swingy. Two cards which are troublesome for me are the pro-red faerie and Sword of Fire and Ice. I win the first game with a pretty narrow margin.

The second game involved a big whoops on my part and I still feel pretty bad about it. I mulled to 6 and drew 7 cards, I looked at my hand and immediately put a card on top. Eric grimaced but allowed it (which was very cool of him). He plays Island, Relic, go. Fearing Wasteland I skip my first land and pass. He plays a turn 2 Faerie and passes. My hand was wasteland, loam, Maze of Ith and some red cards. I play Maze and pass. I eventually end up losing by not drawing a red source to Burning Wish for Pulse to deal with dualiing Trinket Mages which joined the fray some turns later along with a pair of Relic of Progenitus.

Game 3 Eric leads early with Drake, Mage, Faerie then SoFI on board. I find Dreams with Top and Dreams for 3 with a Goyf and KotR on board leaving him no mana to equip the Faerie. Kotr Finishes him off several turns later.

Eric wins out to make it to Top 8. Goooo Karma!

    (2-0)

Round 3 – Opponent playing Goblins (good list)

I made a conscious decision to cut cards like Deed and Explosives from my MD in favor of discard. I saw turn one Mountain Lackey and immediately smacked my forehead for removing all but a few of my MD answers to goblin swarms. I played a Wooded Foothills and passed. I had a top in my hand but I did not play it in hopes that my opponent would overextend (Dreams in hand). He attacked with Lackey, triggers, puts SCG in play, then plays a second Mountain and a Goblin Piledriver. Giddy with excitement I played a Mox Diamond and dreams for 2, leaving his side of the board empty. He had a long road to recovery at this point. I eventually found a loam and we shuffled up for game 2.

I boarded in a few Deeds and a random wish removal spell from my board and took all the discard out. My hand is pretty solid: wish, loam, 3 lands, top, 1 cycle land. He leads with Aether Vial and passes. I play Foothills, crack it for a Mountain and cast Top. He casts Relic of Progenitus and I promptly gulp as I scramble for what to do next. I play a land and pass the turn. My plan at this point is to get him to tap out so I can find a Deed to deal with his Vial, Relic and whatever other cards he plays. I resolve a turn 3 KotR and pass. When he taps out to cast Warchief I was pretty sure I had him beat. On my turn I have nothing in my yard (THANKS RELIC). I play a fetch and sac it (he activates Relic in response). I then tap my Plateau and Taiga for RR and sac the Plateau to KotR. I search up a Tabernacle at Pendral Vale and Dreams for 2 leaving me with 2 mana-producing lands, a huge knight and him with no way of keeping anything alive for a long while.

In hindsight I got very lucky my opponent didn’t know what I was playing Game 1, but I’m happy to have the win regardless.

    (3-0)

Round 4 – Matt (Team Cincinnati) playing Canadian Thresh

There were three people in the room I specifically did not want to play. A guy from Wadsworth playing burn, and Ben Weinburg and Matt who were both running Canadian Thresh. Because I opted into a deck running Thoughtseize and Bob, I knew I had to play things very tightly. Knowing that this game was going to help secure one of us in Top 8 made it more nerve racking.

Game 1 ends pretty quickly as I draw my Goyfs and he doesn’t. I don’t remember much here.

Game 2 goes very long but ultimately ends with me thinking I’ve got the win on board and getting double lightning bolted after activating a fetchland on 7 life.

Game 3 Rather than try to recant the entirety of this game I will give you the final few turns. In the late turns of the game I resolve a Bob. During his turn he Submerges (hard cast) my Goyf to the top (I have no green mana at this point because of Wasteland). On my upkeep I cycle a land so I can reduce the damage from Bob, but I end up flipping a Witness. Next turn I flip another Bob, and the turn after that a Kinight of the Reliquary. At this point I am at 5 life. On his turn he taps out to Bolt me putting me at 2 and hoping my string of luck with Bob stays strong. I flip a fetchland off of good ol’ Bobby and crack it to get my second green source for Witness. I swing with Goyf, cast Witness and get Swords back to Swords my own goyf to put my back at 5. Matt doesn’t draw a land, waits to see what Bob flips, and then extends the hand.

    (4-0)

Round 5 – Max? (Wadsworth Crew) playing Ninjas

At this point we both know we’re in the Top 8 if we ID. We play one for fun and I see cards I haven’t seen since Rav/Kami T2. Lucky for me I playtested the crap out of the Ninjas match when the deck was in T2, and was able to resolve a Dreams for a whopping 4. We sign the slip and I get an hour to grab a bite to eat at Jersey Mike’s across the street.

    (4-0-1)

Round 6 – Bobby (Wadsworth Crew) playing CHOOCHOOCHOO Trainwreck

I ragged on Bobby the previous round for running a singleton Forest over another swamp. He sat down across from me with a 5-0 record and instead of IDing, insisted in playing me for HONOR. He was clearly mad that I insulted his Forest and vowed to beat me with it in play. Since we were both guaranteed a spot in T8, we shuffled up.

Game 1 I win the roll and lead with, what else, a basic Forest. He Thoughtseizes seeing KotR, 2 Goyfs and some land. He take s the Knight and passes. I play my creatures, he wraths, I play more creatures, and he finds ways to deal with them. Eventually I stick a big guy while he’s stuck on 5 land and scoops them up.

Game 2 goes pretty long with Bobby casting multiple Hymn to Tourach and me futzing around with Loam and Top. Eventually I cast a Countryside Crusher and pass the turn. He has no play and passes. On my upkeep I flip one land making Crusher a 4/4. I crack a fetch 5/5. I cast dreams for 4, 13/13. With Bobby at 15 life, I activate my Wasteland targeting a Taiga and swing with my 15/15. He taps his Staff and goes to 1 >_< He flips over the top card and it’s not a removal spell, and with his singleton Forest in his graveyard, extends his hand.

    (5-0-1, first in Swiss)

We are all very happy to split ~$800 in top8.

    Props:

Steve and Kent for a great tournament
    Eric for great karmic justice
Harrison, for being first on my wall to wish me a happy birthday
KotR for always being bigger than Goyf when I cast him
Cincinnati and Wadsworth crew making the hike to C-bus

Re: MEANDECK OPEN: October 25, 2009!!! (Columbus, OHIO)

Why the Meandeck Open didn't have an extra 3 players

At about 8:30 am, three of us from Ann Arbor/Brighton, MI hit the road in anticipation of tearing up the Meandeck Open. At some point, the Driver (Soldar on the source) turned on some "rizz-ap muzz-ak" and missed the part where we stay on US-23, instead aiming us somewhere towards Adrian, a good half hour out of the way. By the time we figured out where we were and how long it would take to get from there to Columbus, we stopped at a Subway and ate. We then went to our local Ann Arbor shop 15 minutes before they open, and played EDH, tested for the upcoming Legacy event (Mox Jet). Hell, we even tried to get a Zendikar draft going, but the shop didn't have enough packs.

That's the story about how we almost went to the Meandeck Open, and almost drafted Zendikar.
"Michael opens with Lotus Petal, Academy Ruins, Phyrexian Dreadnaught, and Stifle. I Force of Will the Stifle, but he has Force of Will backup. I Ponder on turn one and again on turn two, but fail to find a Swords to Plowshares before he has smashed me twice. " That's losing to Mike Sanchirico.

    Team Bad Guys.

I've got one up in the Landstill Thread. Poor reads before the tournament and misplays at crucial points sealed my fate

I got into a serious groove, and then we were going entirely in the wrong direction.
