Usually I use it this way: ramp up to 4 mana, swords a guy (or brainstorm), play Wing Shards. A huge swing in your favor. If not, its still 1 for 1. You also forget situations where they path/bolt/chain the possible blocker.

In the above mentioned situation, even Disenchant is better than Needle. Modern Survival runs up to 4xQP, postboard Grips and/or Nature Claims come in (they always board them), and its not like they have a lot of targets (we only run 2 jittes and maybe 1-2 Relics). If they don't have all that, Needle is golden, but they do, you just can not count on them not having the removal, because they have more of it, than you have needles. And suddenly its a do-nothing.
