Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] Dual Land Draft @ The Batcave (Vancouver, WA) 29 Jun 2008

Bah, interesting? I think both Goblins and AggroLoam are way underplayed. Loam moreso, but Goblins doesn't seem to get any love any more. I'm really pleased to see them both placing in a major tournament.

And the Elves! vs Goblins! deck Wizards put out a few sets ago should totally have been these two lists, whatever they end up actually being...

Also, I haven't actually seen Brett (LinkXWing) in months. And I haven't seen him play anything besides Landstill since...um...well, long before the lists split. Back then it had Mana Drain. Since he cut that card and moved to several colors to offset that loss, I don't know that anything has changed. Must be nice to be so good that you can reappear from the dead, pick up a deck that has more dust on it than Harrison Ford, and Top 4 a major tournament.

    IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Aggro Loam squares off against RB Goblins in the finals! Who will take the title? Will Volt win his own dual land draft?

    They split. We'll never know.

Alright, so Nourishing Lich takes 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 7th, and 8th. There was an Ichorid Variant, a Survival Variant, and Aggro Loam variant, and a Landstill variant, and Next Level Lich port from Extended.

It's a Deck to Beat now. It's the rules, guys.

Yeah, major super double ultra mega hyper props to Volt for buying the duals, organizing, and promoting this thing. And then winning it.

And Teenie, he's thinking of doing another thing in August....

Anyway, we're going to go get foods, so I'll sign off and see you all later (with Anwar's feature match!)

I may be mistaken, but is this the first major tournament* to have both major East Coast and West Coast players in it? Of the Top 8, looked like Volt, Maverick, and LinkXWing from the West Coast, and Anwar and Quicksilver from the East Coast.

Where are Geoff, Trevor, and Brad from? Sorry, guys, I don't recognize your names. Freakish777 made it sound like 5 of the Top 8 may have been East Coast, which would make all three of you the other three guys that drove out here in that car? Awesome.

The latter (paired down, forced to play, lost). Of all of the 4-1s, I had the worst tie-breakers. Sucks, I was definitely felt like I was playing a 5-1 or 6-0 deck, but the wheels sort of fell off at the end.

    My list:

    4-Color Threshold

    4 Brainstorm
    4 Ponder
    3 Sensei's Divining Top

    4 Force of Will
    4 Daze
    3 Counterbalance
    3 Thoughtseize
    2 Spell Snare

    4 Swords to Plowshares
    1 Engineered Explosives

    4 Nimble Mongoose
    4 Tarmogoyf
    2 Mystic Enforcer

    4 Polluted Delta
    4 Flooded Strand
    4 Tropical Island
    3 Underground Sea
    3 Tundra

    Sideboard
    4 Hydroblast
    3 Engineered Plague
    3 Extirpate
    2 Krosan Grip
    2 Pithing Needle
    1 Engineered Explosives

Yeah, Ichorid would have smacked the hell out of me, I was betting I wouldn't face it.

In retrospect, I should have cut the maindeck EE for Spell Snare #3 or Thoughtseize #4.

    Round 1: 2-1 vs. U/G/b Threshold
Round 2: 1-2 vs. CounterSliver (fucked this one up seriously -- previously, in the bag)
    Round 3: 2-1 vs. Burn
    Round 4: 2-0 vs. U/R Painter Combo
    Round 5: 2-1 vs. U/G/r/w Threshold
Round 6: 1-2 vs. Next Level Blue (Legacy-style)

A longer report is forthcoming, since that's What I Do.

In the meantime, I extend deep and heart-felt props to T is for Tool, Alix and Jesse Hatfield, Anwar Ahmad, Dave Price and everyone else who went far out of their way to attend and to Chris Lennon (Volt) for organizing and making this happen.

Again, I'll get my report up in a few days. With pics!

Oh, no. I meant there were 5 East Coast names I recognized (Kreiger, the Hatfields, Dave Price, and Anwar) and 2 of them T8'd (Price and Anwar), thus 40% of the East Coast contingent made Top 8.

You missed T is for Tool who flew out for the weekend just to play, so it's 33%. Still, not bad.

Well, considering the number of players that the West Coast brought (41), and the percent of them who top 8'd (6/41=~15%), it's really not bad.

More specifically, Ninjas had 8 people there, and 2 of them top 8'd (so only 25%), but we did have a guy in the finals (ironically, the man who bought the duals).

    And speaking of top 8s:

    1 Thresh
    1 Enchantress
    1 Ichorid
    1 Goyf Sligh
    1 BGW Control/Rock
    1 Stax

So he hit one Landstill, Ichorid, and BGW Control. Not bad for a top 8 prediction.

And lists? We need them for DTB.

And yes, this tournament was the largest Legacy tournament that the West Coast has ever seen. You should be proud.

And yes, with the success we're pretty much confirming that there will be future events. The goal is to have something every season or so, but the DLD style stuff will be once a year, at summertime (this is the plan, at least). Other things will probably be smaller (say like $10-15 entry with like $400-600 payout in top 4/8), and Mike from Batcave also said we may see some Power tournaments in the future.

Next event is speculated for August, not exactly sure what that is gonna be though. I'm sure Chris will be keeping people informed as he hears things from Mike.

We had at least double that for GP Hollywood easy.

I would have been closer if I was there. :(

Seriously, I was pissed I couldn't go. My friend who I was going with was my ride and he called me early in the morning telling me how he couldn't go because he was going to the hospital. His grandma apparently fell, but is alright. Please, please do another tournament in August, Chris.

With engineered explosives, it is a good card to have against non-land permanents with converted mana cost equal to what you set the explosives to, but it doesn't hit those that have differing cc. Plus, engineered explosives has sunburst.
