Thread: Most unfortunate Magic Art

Sneak attack is unfortunate in some way. The picture is the exact opposite from what that card does. You sneak huge dragons into play to fly over those littl gobos!

    Isn't Italian just Latin 2.0?
If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's probably delicious.

For being, arguably, the best creature ever printed, Tarmogoyf needs better art. Comparing Tarm to Psychatog, Tog wins hands down.

It's more like Latin 3.11 into Latin 95.

I agree with the Tarmogoyf comment, but once again no one really cares because he is so overrated.

Who cares if she was dead, we did her anyway...

Another card whose illustration doesn't quite match with the text...

...the guy is just having a heart attack because the creature now can't damage him any more?

    There's also

...which are clearly not the worst, but if more cards looked like these ones, I would definitely feel more stupid playing Magic.

Phil Foglio seemed to just make up what creatures existed in mtg. Green Cyclopses and Georgian Humans were certainly not the allied races in Ice Age.

And now we have surfing goblins in swimming trunks. Doesn't life make sense?

    Re: Most unfortunate Magic Art

Back when the Foglios were doing Magic art, there was no art direction like there is now. Usually, all the artist was given was the name of the card - and sometimes even that changed.
“It's possible. But it involves... {checks archives} Nature's Revolt, Opalescence, two Unstable Shapeshifters (one of which started as a Doppelganger), a Tide, an animated land, a creature with Fading, a Silver Wyvern, some way to get a creature into play in response to stuff, some way to get a land into play in response to stuff (a different land from the animated land), and one heck of a Rube Goldberg timing diagram.

Still, other artists managed to get similar looking art to one another, or at least art which doesn't look completely out of place on a magic card.

    Re: Most unfortunate Magic Art

It's true that Phil's art ruined the flavor of his cards lots of times (most often in Portal, though maybe he thought people buying Portal would likely want VERY dumb art). Like...

But sometimes their humorous drawing fits pretty well. Usually when there's Orcs or Goblins involved. I like this one...

What most people don't know is that Phil Foglio was, at that time, popular and one of the more in vogue fantasy artists. I've seen a ton of books from around that time featuring his art too.

Must cleanse the name of the Foglio's!

I never thought dicks are looking good and printing it on a magic card with legs and teeth won't change my opinion.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet. I mean, it fits the name, but that thing is hideous.

At least, it's funny. But, oh yes, it was already funny before having teeth.
