While I did hate the guy for top 8ing with Ichorid, and I was super let down that no survival variants made it, those two commentators were really starting to piss me off. They questioned so many of Cappy's plays. I was like, dude, not only did he help invent the deck, he day 2'd GP: Flash without goyf, and top 8'd chicago, get off his nuts, he knows what he's doing.
On a side note, great job Dave. I was watching on the internetz and rooting for you the whole time. I was sad that you didn't win it all, but still, great showing once again.
Can we rewatch the top8 if we missed it ?
Nvm, I found it.
any chance of posting the decklists?
im pretty sure not double bolting right away was wrong. what did you hope to draw, 2x goyf off the top and have both of them resolve?

Why do I need two goyfs? All I need is 1 to kill his. If he forces the goyf, I have a reb backup, and bolts to kill his. Even a submerge gives me two draw steps. Anyways, it was a tough decision to make, and I am aware that there are two lines of play, I don't know if one is more correct than the other. It is really tough to say.
Could you please tell us at least what decks you played against, I am curious to see how you handled the janky decks near the beginning of the tourney, if any. Also, what is your gameplan vs Enchantress? What has your experience against the deck taught you as far as that matchup is concerned?

I wanna see what the Ugb countertop decks looked like.
It looks like a straight EV question (barring having a read - and if you know for sure he has the counter, it's even worse).
I would agree with the intuition that you have greater odds of drawing an "out" before Goyf kills you than you do of him not having a counter for Bolt.
“It's possible. But it involves... {checks archives} Nature's Revolt, Opalescence, two Unstable Shapeshifters (one of which started as a Doppelganger), a Tide, an animated land, a creature with Fading, a Silver Wyvern, some way to get a creature into play in response to stuff, some way to get a land into play in response to stuff (a different land from the animated land), and one heck of a Rube Goldberg timing diagram.”

yeah it was a sketchy keep too i think of 4 lands in game3. i guess u want a plethora of lands in the mirror, but it was skethy w/o threats.

Round 1: Mono White 2-0
Round 2: Naya Zoo 2-0
Round 3: Merfolk 2-0
Round 4: Belcher 2-1 (Turn 1 win on the play G1)
Round 5: Tim Hunt (UGB CB) 2-1
Round 6: Ernest (Ichorid) 2-0
6-0
Round 7-8: ID
Top 8: Ben Steiner (UGW CB Top) 2-0
Top 4: Ben Weinberg (Mirror) 1-2
As for your second question, I have never played against Enchantress.
Thank you! It was great meeting you.
Sorry, who's keep/what match? Looking at the coverage, It looks like I didn't have more than 2-3 lands in my hand. Either way, having a land heavy hand in the mirror is quite good.
I'd glady keep 4 lands in the mirror. Also my maindeck was 2 cards off of Caplan's. I had the 2 Vendillion clique's over the bounce spells.
Sb I had
4 submerge (sooooooo sick)
4 pryoblast (giving threshold w/o targets is relevant and being misdirected/extirpated/meddling mage seems unlikely)
2 trygon predator
2 krosan grip
3 pryoclasm
After playing in worlds I am adding 2 tormod crypts for 2 pryoclasm b/c I think dredge is getting more popular.
My matchups were:
MUC 2-0
Dredge 1-2 (ernest)
burn 2-0
UGW counterbalance 2-0
RG zoo 2-0
Elf survival 2-0
ID w/ White stax
I'm don't remember what my other matchup was but I'm pretty sure they had tarmogoyf
t8
Tim Hunt UGB Cbalance 2-1
t4 Caplan mirror 2-1
t2 split w/ Dredge piloted by Ernest

Gooba, I was watching your quarterfinals, and I saw a play which I found kind of weird. You played turn 1 Volcanic go, he plays turn 1 Heirarch which you Daze. Then, in your turn, you Waste his land while holding a Stifle and the same Volcanic. Woulndt've been better to play land go and Waste the turn after? The other guy made a mistake not playing the Counterbalance definitely.

I hope footage of me playing never makes it to this site. Is it truly necessary to second guess every play?

Yes. Playing on tape is kinda like being trapped into a Smmenen article. By the end, every line of play is analyzed and most feel like it really wasn't worth it. I personally love it and like to playtest with a group over my shoulder commenting on every decision. That said, playing very high level magic for 10 hours straight is pretty taxing. That Cappy can still reason his way through his decisions in a timely manner, with being either completely or arguably correct, is a testament to immense playskill and experience with the deck.
Congrats on top4 Dave!
For those that keep saying that Thrash isn't evolving with the new cards, I think you're going to eventually have to eliminate Cappy in swiss. That might be shocking enough to invite change, otherwise the smart money is on him again for next year's legacy champs with the same 75.

Been there, tried that, still casting Doomsday.
Drawing my deck for 0 mana since 2013.
I don't know which game this is exactly, so it is hard to justify my exact play. There are a few reasons to do this. Among them, if he has a Daze or Fow for my stifle, he can land a turn 2 counterbalance or goyf. Or, if he draws a non-fetch while I am holding blue open, my stifle is looking pretty silly.
I don't mind going over my plays. I do it myself after the match with my teammates all the time.
yeah that guy also boarded out the counterbalances vs you while its probably the best card in his deck in the matchup.
ben weinburg was a master though, i saw him come back from a mull to 5 w/ only a wasteland in his hand vs the guy playing some type of deed/putrify thresh deck... i guess its some team america variant.
