How was Meloku for you? I had one in my Nicol Bolas deck but I hated returning lands to my hand. Even though Oona isn't as consistent when making tokens, I liked her better. I also had Fire/Ice but cut it since it didn't do much for me; the decks I play against don't have many x/1's or x/2's.

    "K, block with Jotun Grunt?"
    "It has pro white."
    "Swords?"
    "It still has pro white."

Vamp Tutor. I'm not so sure about Meloku or Mystical Teachings. Unfortunately, I only see... 7 targets for Scepter? (Terminate, Fire/Ice, Mystical Tutor, Ancestral Visions, Counterspell, Countersquall, Mana Drain)

Meloku was a recent addition, I was playing Psychatog and it just blew. I don't have much experience. The greatest benefit of Meloku is returning Academy to protect it and/or replay for more mana.

I agree with Vampiric Tutor. Fire/Ice is alright, it's mainly used to tap something and draw a card. It could be something better, I just don't know what.

Scepter is weak. 2 for 1's on yourself often suck.

What do you guys think about Phyrexian Arena?

Arena is REALLY good. I feel like a tool for not suggesting it to you earlier.

Fire/Ice is perfectly alright. Tapping down their academy, karoo, mana vault, et al during their upkeep... stopping a general swing, all as a cantrip effectively.... or at worst, a 1:1 for an annoying 2-toughness creature like Teeg. If you're thinking Arena, I guess Rhystic Study's better for that route. I'm a little on the fence on Bit Blast... I guess it can be used as they cast a spell and see if a counter pops up. Sorin Markov is an option. Chopping their life to 10 out of nowhere for 6 mana... Also, in the vein of Vamp Tutor, there's Imperial Seal if you've got one.

    Updated the list.

    It now inlcludes...

    Urborg
    Decree of Pain
    Promise of Power
    Phyrexian Arena
    Rhystic Study
    Sorin Markkov

    Taking out...

    Guile
    Thirst for Knowledge
    Fire/Ice
    Electrolyze
    Blatant Thievery
    Some land

I'd play Skeletal Scrying over Promise. Much more flexible, easier on the casting cost, and it's an instant.

    Volrath's Stronghold is curiously missing?

I don't know if there's enough creatures to justify it honestly. Scrying is one of my favorite cards, I can't believe I forgot it. I want to play both, but for now Scrying will take Promise's slot. I want to add Promise back in, but I don't know what to cut. Grixis Charm? Fuck.

I wouldn't value Stronghold based on the number of creatures you run. Since, as you said, you don't run very many, you want to get more mileage out of the ones you do play. Stronghold is an easy way to do it.

    Maybe play it over Invoke?

I've been trying Stronghold. I've found the main problem is that it doesn't tap for colored mana. This deck is really blue mana hungry.

    Isn't AV a sorcery?
also, what's the choice on Thraximundar over, say, Sedris, the Traitor King or Gaarza Zol, Plague Queen?

Haste, can kill in three swings. It's also the Abyss. Although, a Sedris dredge or mill yourself with Crypt of Agadeem(Sp?) would be awesome.

Sedris becomes a late-game CA machine with things like Evoke creatures. Evoke Mulldrifter, Unearth Mulldrifter makes a 4-for-1. It's ridiculous.

As for Thrax, I guess he's a pretty good general for a mostly combat-based one. With enough accel your opponents can have something as nasty as a 7-turn clock to deal with.

I understand why Sedris is good, but I don't want a graveyard based deck. I want a control deck.

Grab the reins seems good in this deck. And Slave of Bolas. No love for Twisted Abomination btw?

They both force you to tap out on your turn. Twisted Abomb is solid, but the only creature that I see as cutable is Memnarch. Is Memnarch better than Abomb?

A couple months ago, for the five minutes I thought AV was an instant, I thought I had broken Legacy. Turns out not so much.

For your deck, I would probally try to run mind's eye. Monstruous card advantage and can be good with tezz.

Also, have you tried running nicol bolas ? He seems to be an alternate win con, and often, if he deals damage, it's game over for that player.

    Re: [EDH] Thraximundar

Why? The deck already has tons of card draw. Rhystic study is just better.

Nicol bolas is interesting but I think it's too mana intensive for it's effect. It also wouldn't last long enough to hit a player.
