I had my first tournament piloting this deck a couple days ago and finished in the top 8 losing out in the quarter finals heres the decklist I used:
Lands
4 City of Traitors
4 Ancient Tomb
11 Mountain
Maindeck
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Gathan Raiders
4 Seething Song
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Trinisphere
2 Chandra Ablaze
4 Blood Moon
3 Magus of the Moon
4 Rakdos Pit Dragon
4 Reckless Wurm
Sideboard:
4 Pyrokinesis
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Pyroblast
3 Tormod's Crypt
3 Powder Keg
2 Anarchy
This was a 6 round tournament with a cut to the top 8 and I finished 4-1-1. Ill forego a proper tournament report here and focus on the elements in the deck I chose that are not seen too often in DS. Chandra Ablaze + Reckless Wurm go very well together and I wouldnt have played the wurms without Chandra. Chandra ablaze was absolutley back breaking every time she got into play (amazingly no one ever countered her). I got the idea to use her from the all in red deck used in extended. the idea being to get her out then burn the opponent with any spare cards and never let them get a stable hand together long enough to form any kind of strategy to use against you. Reckless Wurm complements this strategy quite nicely by burning 4 for with her +1 ability then sticking around on the board.
My loss came against a weird landstill deck that was just loaded up with answers and eventually won by answering every threat I was able to produce and winning off Elspeth and my loss in the quarter finals was against merfolk. The draw was and intentional draw in the last round.
As I did say at the beginning this was my first time running the deck at a tournament so I really wasnt sure what the right sideboarding strategies were and sometimes being unsure of which hands are keepers and which arent so Id really like to hear some suggestions, comments, and or changes I could make to improve the deck. Merfolk was a really bad matchup for me so I was thinking of trying either Magnetic Mountain or Boil in the board for such an occasion.
Hey, congrats on t8.
i didn't have as much luck recently :P
I actually know someone with almost the exact same list. It's nicely built, and the version is fairly consistent. Although the merfolk mu does seem to get a bit worse in this case.
Magnetic mountain isn't such a good choice here as meerow jeeraw (is thaat spelled right) and BEB passes this by easily. Also Boil isn't so hot as they tend to abuse you with manlands and vial. and only 1 creature actually needs UU. It will only slightly slow them down.
Right now, I'm 6/7 in tournie play against merfolk. I feel it's not just what u side in, but what u side out.(simple enough right?)
For merfolk, a lot of times, a trinisphere, and 2-3 moon's have to exit for pyrokinesis. I also board in RAkroma, which has won me 2 games decisively by t4. usually, u side out higher costing stuff for these too.
Hope this helps. BTW, who did u lose to in t8? or was that the landstill. in that case, who'd u lose to in swiss?
I Placed 7th on satuday in an event with 106 people at Jupiter games playing dragon stompy. I just got done with the report which can be found here:
http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...501#post438501
also, congrats on the finish mada! I have also found boil to be fantastic in certain matchups. Even if it only slows down merfolk a bit, setting back their tempo can be great i've found

Will says I'm in BZK. I don't know what is going on.
Good job on the finish! I'll definitely consider your boils. Now that I think of it, they really would've helped in the scepter chant mu i had!
Also, in your report (against merfolk), how come u attacked first with mauler, then played a spell? I usually think attack first, but with mauler, you get additional damage with playing spells first.
It's only when they play a spell that you get the counters. I think I was trying to see if I could draw a hydroblast or something like that which would better protect the other threats that I held in my hand. I'm positive I had a reason to swing then play the spell, I just can't remember why at this point.
One of my friends recommended it back in november, and I've had at least 2 in my sideboard from that day. Even if it doesn't outright win a matchup right then, it slows down your opponents tempo which is huge for us as it can allow us to resolve extra threats, and put them very low on life before they come close to stabilizing. It is also very effective at drawing out counters that are sitting in their hands waiting for your creatures
Will says I'm in BZK. I don't know what is going on.
Definitely helpful. In t8 I lost to merfolk 2-0 and in swiss I lost to that landstill deck 2-1. I definitely need to work on my boarding overall though I found I was never really sure when Id need to put in powder keg or pyrokinesis. The only ones I really was sure when to use were anarchy and tormod's crypt.
Id try RAkroma in there as well with the boils though that might be a bit excessive. Red Blast didnt seem too great given that the deck runs trinisphere I might have to adjust hte sideboard for that. The only disappointing part of the tournament was that the prize for the bottom 4 was 6 packs of worldwake whereas 3rd and 4th got 2 revised duals of their choice (which I really couldve used), 2nd got timetwister, 1st got mox ruby.
One other matchup I am a bit concerned about is the dream halls/progenitus combo deck. I played that deck in the third round and went 2-0 against it but it was in no small part due to the opponent never seeing this deck before and making a crucial play error in both games. In game 1 he played show and tell around turn 4 and put dream halls into play while holding a progenitus in his hand with a trinisphere active. In game 2 with a blood moon out he wanted to hardcast dream halls but instead of playing the basic island in his hand he played a dual land which bought me just enough time to get chandra out
I definitley know what you mean. I lucked out beating dream halls because G1, I outran him straight. 2nd game, i could sit down on trini, leaving only the S&T+ progenitus combo. when he went for it, I revealed RAkroma. Both creatures are pretty much a 2 turn clock with his life loss and my mountains. so it's good that u get the 1st attack. :P This is the only real mu where i like pyroblast. although, i still wont play it cuz not enough DH around.
Went 4-1 placing 5th in 31 people tournament. Here's the deck I ran:
Avalanche Stompy
11x Mountain
4x Ancient Tomb
4x Crystal Vein
4x Chrome Mox
4x Seething Song
4x Simian Spirit Guide
4x Chalice of the Void
4x Trinisphere
2x Blood Moon
4x Magus of the Moon
4x Avalanche Riders
4x Rakdos Pit Dragon
4x Gathan Raiders
3x Arc-Slogger
SB:
4x Pyroclasm
3x Boil
3x Pithing Needle
3x Tormod's Crypt
2x Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs
Crystal veins were a budget choice first, but as I playtested , I started to like them.. After tourney I like them more.
And avalanche riders - LD in a stick.. MM-M. Running them with 4x trinisphere I can really wreck opponents manabase , even without a moon effect, I feel that this enables more choices meaning less mulligans.
Anyway my matchups were
1st match against 43 lands (2-0)
Well, quite the favorable matchup for starters. Chalice for 2 kills loam, riders beating Ith and factories for free beats. Blood moon finishes second game.
2nd match against cephalid breakfast (2-1)
First match I had an awesome hand, going first turn chalice @ 1, second turn trini, third turn blood moon and fourth turn Slogger. No clue at this point what opponent is playing.
Second game he goes in response to my blood moon fetch tropical - tutor for illusionist and goes off next turn.
Third game: First turn blood moon and beats.
3rd match against enchantress (1-2)
Well i wasn't happy at all when I heard my friends name, as I knew he's playing enchantress and it's a horrible matchup for DStompy.
First game he quickly goes sigil and thats it. Second game I have two avalanche riders killing his mana with a trinisphere backup, later magus of the moon and win. Third game i screw up totally when needling as I didn't remember cop red. (We were both very tired as we had 2 hours of sleep and some beer last night...)
4th match against aggroloam (2-1)
Don't remember much about this matchup but it involved him killing my ancient tomb and mox first turn and confidant funtime with seismic. But, I won with gathan beats and trini ld if i recall correct..
5th match was against canadian thresh maybe...
First game trini, magus, funtime. Second i have no clue what he's playing except some blue duals. Side in 2 boil and 2 needle blind. This time we beat eachother. raiders vs goyf(s). Topdeck chalice at 10 life, opponent having 2 4/5 goyfs and me Gathan Raiders. Topdeck chalice. Play for 2, it gets countered, I make a play error here and attack with raiders still thinking goyfs are 4/5. Opponent drops to 1 or 2 and beat the 10 life away. Noehs... Last game first turn blood moon, second turn RPD -> beats to senseless.
Anyhow it was a fun tourney even though I made some errors and was reaaally tired. :)

Powder Keg and Pyrokinesis would have both come in against Merfolk, if you run both. Keg especially. Keg is strong against Merfolk.
While Boarding against Merfolk does depend largely on your build and your board, It's worth noting that unless your opponent is boarding a large quantity of Blasts, Chalice of the Void is not really all that strong against them. Chal-1 shuts off a whopping eight cards on the play, and is worse on the draw, and Chal-2 is only good if they don't hit a Vial. Trinisphere, on the other hand, is a monster against Merfolk, making Force and Daze both potentially very weak, which means you can drop your Dragons and Sloggers and just win.
Moon, while not really all that powerful here, is better against Merfolk than Chalice is. It at least shuts off four of Merfolk's strongest beaters and their Wastelands, which timed well can knock you off Hellbent when you need it most.
Hi guys...
What do you think of the new spoiled card Tuk Tuk? He seems to fit perfectly in the cc of DS [2R]... and he is a nice Beater, somehow, sometimes =P...

http://serv1.tcgimages.eu/img/cards/...lorless_55.jpg
also 1 question @ Taco: You have done some testings with AEther Flash against aggro, lately?
Would be interested... let me know, if you finally tested it =P
YawG
I think Kazuul fits better in the sideboard after all, but I like him. At least that's my opinion, and I use to play 3 Arc-Sloggers. Tuktuk seems quite impressive (after being 5/5 he is vulnerable to Keg with 0 counters though). But maybe the future is this: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/attac...7&d=1270600295 . After one level-up at sorcery speed he is 6/6 at a good cost. And 3-4 rounds later...

Casting Seething Song to level up a dude is quite the play. Quite the play. Aka a giant tempo loss. In a tempo deck, that's probably bad news bears.
The level up creature has some potential, but the creature he is technically competing with is RPD. RAkroma and mauler both are effectively in the 3 casting cost slot as far as creatures go in the deck. Its a bit easier to cast due to no double red, but its a slower threat that lacks evasion when it needs it. It works as a one sided wrath, but after spending way too much mana on it. I'd rather have the game over powering out fatties, chalices, moons and such.
Also, went 5-2 for 14th place out of 91 in vestal today with the same list. I didn't run into any graveyard decks so I had essentially 6 useless spots, but I did manage to hardcast Akroma FTW against my friend running landstill in round 1, so missing top 8 wasn't too big a deal. I'll probably do a really mini report when I get out of work
Will says I'm in BZK. I don't know what is going on.
Well, using Seething Song to level this dude doesn't look like a promising strategy, unless you topdeck it.
But 6/6 for 3R + 1R seems to be worth a test.
Also, having the opportunity to sink your large amounts of Mana into a walking onesided Inferno while you're in Topdeck mode (which as we all know happens quite often) doesn't seem too bad to me.
Ringleader into Balloon Brigade, Digging Team, Artisans, Snowman.
Won an 8-man tonight with this list:
10x Mountain
4x Ancient Tomb
4x City of Traitors
4x Chrome Mox
4x Seething Song
4x Simian Spirit Guide
4x Chalice of the Void
3x Trinisphere
4x Blood Moon
2x Umezawa's Jitte
4x Magus of the Moon
2x Taurean Mauler
4x Rakdos Pit Dragon
4x Gathan Raiders
3x Arc-Slogger
SB:
4x Pyrokinesis
1x Trinisphere
2x Anarchy
2x Pithing Needle
3x Tormod's Crypt
1x Faerie Macabre
1x Akroma, Angel of Fury
Quick report
r1 vs 43 lands
G1: t1 blood moon on the draw. I draw a bunch of cards, eventually song into slogger. He casts mindslaver. I burn him for 6 and swing, he can only kill a Gathan Raiders in my hand on the crackback, gg. Board out Jittes, 1 slogger, trinispheres for grave hate and needles.
g2: mull to 5 into magus. 2 turns later Raiders morphed.1 turn after that, Pit Dragon provokes the scoop.
r2 vs. Reanimator.
G1:I open on draw ancient tomb, mountain, trinisphere, chalice, magus, SSG. He Thoughtsiezes me, taking my Magus(!) I chalice at 1, he casts no spells for the rest of the game, and I take it down soon thereafter with dragon. Board in gravehate, Trini and Akroma, board out Jittes, 1 song, 1 slogger, 1 Mauler, 1 other card I forget
G2: He siezes my t1 chalice, but my t2 song->Dragon gets there. Next turn raiders eats the daze in his hand, but he's got nothing relevant outside of "Extirpate your chalices and City of Traitors" I rip an ancient tomb to cast blood moon. However, I draw a pair pf arc-sloggers, keeping me from going hellbent, and have to trade Dragon with a SnTed Tombstalker. I soon TD enough mana sources to cast Slogger, get one forced, and kill with the second one--he finds no relevant action in time, and I have found a crypt by this point for insurance.
r3 vs. Merfolk
g1: I mull to 5, and he's got daze daze and he claims a force. Take out 4 blood moon 3 trini, 1 magus, and put in Pyrokinesis, Needle (Vial, waste, commander, mutavault) Akroma, and Jitte
g2: Pithing needle t1 eats a force. t2 Raiders and spirit guide backup eats double daze. t4 Arc-sloger with a mana open eats Hydroblast. I rip Slogger like a champ and he takes it down
g3: He opens on island, I on mountain. He lays an island and Silvergill Adept. I Jitte off 2x mountain. He lays a LoA and swings. I pyrokinesis, pitching Rakdos Pit Dragon. He dazes, I pitch guide. He Forces, I take 3. Next turn I play the song-> slogger I have been sandbagging, and it gets there. Gee Gee.
I was very happy with the deck's perfomance. The meta was 2x 43 lands, UWB thopter counterbalance, ANT, Reanimator, Zoo, Merfolk and me, so Dragon Stompy was a metagame crusher. I liked the SB--though it never came in, unlike all of the other cards, Anarchy is a necessary counter if I should ever face Stax or Enchantress.
Hi guys new to the thread here.
I'm kinda interested in building the deck (both competitively and an occasional casual multiplayer, none of my other legacy decks[reanimator, vial affinity and mighty quinn] seem to be able to play fairly) but got a few questions before I start building it.
I see some builds running Crystal Vein instead of City of Traitors, I do know that it's for budget or that they can't find the Citys, but some builds are saying that they like it over Citys why is that?
For aggro decks, some people board in Aether Flash, while LoStefano boards in Flametongue Kavu, anyone tried test both? Flash seems to work well against tribal stuff while flametongue is kinda like spot removal on a stick. Which is actually better?
Lastly I keep hearing that this deck is inconsistent to the point that it has to keep mulli-ing, is it that bad, it sounds like it's as inconsistent as belcher?
Sorry for the ton of questions.
