Things like Rishadan Port, Dust Bowl, Misdirection, Vindicate, Pernicious deed, Food Chain, and pretty much anything that's played or at least close to being played in Legacy already from Masques up. If there was some "Overextended" format to break out eventually you'd want that stuff since Masques would be the new "beta" of the format.

Around 2003 I went to Ireland, bought from some dude 4 Wastelands for 50c each, a year later or so sold them at GP Rimini for 25€ set, thought I made mad profit. (I did tho, its like 1200% more moneyz).

Wish I kinda kept em :(

Ah yes, shocklands, those will be a big one. I guess you can include the Scars lands too since they are quite efficient for what they are. I had been using them in decks with Sundering Titan since you don't need to go past 3 lands much in a reanimator and they dodge the titan's land cracking ability. Worth considering. I have foils of them now since I realized it.

This might be the most retarded thing I've seen since Candelabra: http://magiccards.info/ds/en/148.html

    $55 for a Mirrodin card?!

It's a confirmation of the "herd mentality" running rampant in speculators these days. As soon as something is nearly sold out, one of the few stores with the card remaining in stock will jack the price up to obscene amounts, and the rest will follow suit.

What? Sword of Fire and Ice $55?

I just got mine for $15 last week for EDH.

If SoFI is $55, how much will Jittes be?
I am convinced that WotC is "dumbing" the game because of all the stupid posts they come across on MTG-related forums

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard

That's EDH at work. Supply and demand my friend. If you owned the last Vezzerdrix since the rest were destroyed in fits of fury, how much is it worth? A shit ton. Because someone will want it. Would you still sell for 25 cents since you know it's crap? Hell no, you get what you know you can obviously.

EDH is driving prices quite a bit. It's really kind of odd seeing a casual format make such a change in things. I've been watching it quite a bit lately and already went on a small spending spree picking up the good EDH rare foils from older sets like Urza's Legacy and Masques. I bet I will not regret doing it later.

By the way, if you guys want a quick speculative piece of advice, pick up Stoneforge Mystic, Sword of Feast and Famine, and Squadron Hawk foils. I've been playing around with this ported standard deck to Legacy and it's the real deal. I won a tournament today handily with it. It was kind of scary how easily I got through against veterans piloting good decks. I'm hedging my bets on this one.

isn't SOFI better than Jitte (heavier play in multiple formats - SOFI is good in vintage)
in the longer term i would bet on SOFI over Jitte (in terms of playability) and Jitte was GP promo'd and released in the rat's nest pre-con which screws with rarity

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard

I simply don't understand how such a narrow card from a relatively modern set--played usually as a one-of in Legacy and EDH, and essentially not in any other formats at all--can command more than $30, let alone $50.

This isn't a multiple format all-star like Goyf, and it certainly doesn't see play in that many archetypes. This is just simply a ridiculous price for a card that I've generally been underwhelmed with when I do include it in my decks.

It's as though a recent EDH surge caused all of the SoFIs to be bought out at a slightly high, but still reasonable price tag of $20, and one store just decided to jack up the price as high as they could for shits and giggles to see if anyone would bite. And lo and behold, because of the speculators' mentality of not wanting to be caught behind, that becomes the new retaier price.

And for the record, I picked up a playset back in the Angel Stompy days, so this isn't a disgruntled rant because I can no longer afford SoFIs. This is really alarming for the game.

Wow that's insane. It's a great card and all, but such a price tag for a card that sees almost no competitve play is really disturbing. I mean, what's next Solemn Simulacrum and Duplicant hitting double digits?

I know this was a joke, but Duplicant is pretty safe, I think - he was reprinted in those Archenemy deck thingies, so he isn't worth stockpiling en masse.

Speaking of Archenemy, taking on three casual players at once with a Stax deck is fun!

SOFI offers economic card draw to any color of deck running creatures - that makes it strong and unusual in the game
i rate it and expect its price to only increase in the future

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard

I have questions about times to unload cards. I cashed in when KotR and SfM were about 10$ influenced by the impression that 10$ is the cap for rare cards in modern (read: stupid mythic rare) sets. I think SfM is only so high because of the poor quality of WWK and wonder if it will drop once rotated out.

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard

I'll assume that SfM is Stoneforge Mystic? Stoneforge is only high priced due to standards Caw Blade and the fact it's a second set in the block. 2nd sets are always tricky to get foils and high demand rares for. Drafting doesn't last long with the second set so there's not much out there. Eventually, all the cards from the initial opening (pre-releases, releases) all settled into collector or player's hands. Once a card gets a higher demand later, that supply is pressed since some of those people aren't going to trade or sell out. Since it didn't get drafted much early on, it becomes hard to get.

A good example of the opposite is M10. That set got a ton of people buying it not just for drafting, but just plain cracking boxes since it was such a good deal. It crushed the prices and drove them low. Glacial Fortress is a great card, used in a ton of decks including the darling of the scene Caw Blade. Why is it a 2 dollar card? They opened that much product. Worldwake wasn't opened even close to that.

When Stoneforge leaves standard, he'll drop somewhat, especially the non-foil. He's good enough to be used in extended so he'll keep a lot of his price. He'll never hit the bargain bin though. Foils will hold the price hard due to eternal formats.

I'd dare to say that the print runs of WWK and m10 are the same.

Or am I wrong? Why would wizards print eg. 1 000 000 of each card in m10 and 500 000 copies each of Worldwake?

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard

Worldwake is sold out. Guess most of it sits either in stores or is opened. Just like any recent sets.

The diff is mostly around few %, I doubt that more than 20% of each set is somewhere unopened.
