Thread: [Deck] Zoo

    Re: [DTB] Zoo

Ithink if you play or don't play GSZ, gaddock teeg is quite good against much decks. You don't play things that cost more than 4 mana and you stop alot of spells, you can't defend it but still...

Tariff is so narrow that it's better to just be willing to lose to a Progenitus than dilute a sideboard with a few cards that hose one specific card. Thus, it is more advantageous to attack a certain strategy than a certain card.

Thanks for bringing up Tariff, Nelis. I haven't thought of that card in a long time

Oh, I agree but Tariff is frequently mentioned in the Rock topic so I thought it a good thing to mention it here as well.
Quit playing Legacy but could still play Goblins (Rgw, Rg, Rw, Rb)

The Rock is doing something differently from even a Big Zoo deck. It's more of a disruptive-midrange deck, it's more controling. Zoo in any fashion wants to beat down in short order, the difference between black and red, really. Given the different strategy, it's an option for Rock cuz they're looking to out the opponent in the first place. Call me naive but I don't think Zoo's winning against a quick Progenitus.

Or just play quick Zoo... You'll have a much easier time simply racing Progenitus. I believe Zoo does not want to be an answer deck. Fireblast and Price of Progress seem to be better sideboard cards than something like Tariff and sometimes even than Teeg. But you have to play aggro/quick Zoo for this to work, not those midrangy versions.

Not meaning to sound rude, but maybe its proponents could explain to me what are the advantages of playing Big Zoo over something like Bant?

    Obviously because red > blue.

Big Zoo has better Merfolk, Goblins, and Counterbalance matchups. Blue gives you more game against Combo.

Bant isn't counter dense, but has outs like FoW against bad match ups. It's a bad control deck as well as a bad beatdown deck, but it can do things like NO>Progenitus and protect it which is a pretty sweet play

I really do like Bant, but I do not have the duals, fetches, FoW currently. I could borrow all of them from my friend, but I'd rather have my own cards. I do however have all of Zoo, thus that is why I play Zoo over Bant. I was just looking to see if there is an answer for things like Progenitus because I noticed I had a terrible matchup against anything with either him or Emrakul.

It might make your mana base look a little uglier, but Karakas is a pretty popular answer to Emrakul, especially in decks that already run Knight of the Reliquary. Not to play Captain Obvious or anything...
Bless your heart, we must consider Blue/White Tempo's strategy and win percentages in an entirely different deck thread. -4eak

    Re: [DTB] Zoo

Show and Tell or Natural Order are the reason I play Zoo with Blue, as these matchups go from bad to good. Traditional Zoo isn't well equipped to fight these "slower" 1 card combo decks outside of racing. Spell Pierce, Force of Will, and Daze + a clock is the strategy you want to be wielding against the decks winning with spells. Bant does this as well, but I find its clock to be slower against Storm.

I'm interested how the hell you've found enough good blue cards to run in this deck to support Force of Will. Like, what does your creature base look like? How much burn do you use? I'm intrigued, if maybe a little skeptical...

I do run Karakas. It can answer Emrakul but not Progenitus. It also requires me to have it before I see Emrakul so against Show and Tell decks, if I don't have it in my opening 7, I'm kind of screwed.

Ir you can Show in Knight when they put in Emrakul. You can find and use Karakas on your turn.

yeah 4 kotrs and 1 karakas blanks the emrakal strategy pretty well. blanking half of show and tells win conditions certainly helps that matchup a ton. Obv you are not racign a turn 2 progenitus but you have some hope against a turn 3 one if you got a fast start. You can side in gaddock teeg vs NO or sneak attack too if you want. anything past that seems like a a waste of sidebaord space unless you play in a well definded meta where you see a ton of progenitus

In fast zoo I have countered Show and Tell with REB for the win before.

I use both. Gaddock Teeg is so good in other matchups that he deserves a slot anyway. Tariff is there just the for the Show and Tell/Natural Order lists.

Best ways to deal with Progenitus~
    - race him, bring in REb's along with whatever Paths you have to help kill Rhox War Monks and guys that show up. also using protection from green is becoming more of an option, whether it comes from a Sword or just using Mirran Crusader to run past basically every creature they have.
-Gaddock Teeg is super good right now, in addition to the usual things he blanks (planeswalkers chalice engineered explosives force timespiral etc etc) natural order and green sun's zenith are both shut down by him as well.
-casting your own natural order. this seems more do-able in big zoo lists out of the sideboard.

most other answers i've seen have been to awkward/narrow.
