Hi all, I took down Mythic again with MUD. I went to Jupiter the previous weekend and went 3-2 to take 12th. I could literally see my poor play in my losses after reflecting on the matches. This weekend I was a little more careful and it definitely paid off.
My list as usual:
4 Wurmcoil Engine
4 Steel Hellkite
4 Lodestone Golem
3 Phyrexian Revoker
2 Platinum Emperion
2 Karn Liberated
4 Thran Dynamo
4 Grim Monolith
3 Metalworker
3 Voltaic Key
4 Chalice of the Void
1 All is Dust
3 Buried Ruin
3 Mishra's Factory
4 Wasteland
4 Rishadan Port
4 City of Traitors
4 Ancient Tomb
SB: 3 Cursed Totem
SB: 4 Trinisphere
SB: 4 Thorn of Amethyst
SB: 1 Karn Liberated
SB: 2 All is Dust
SB: 1 Crucible of Worlds
As you can see, I removed Sundering Titan and Phyrexian Metamorph. At Jupiter, I had tried Sun Droplet and found it to be worthless; it is a trap and I repeatedly played into it, keeping poor hands because of Droplet.
One of my losses was Miracles at Jupiter so I am trying Thorn of Amethyst as additional disruption since Trinisphere is not strong enough in that match up (they can easily play around it).
Here are my previous reports:

So I will dive right into the matches:
Round 1: Andrew with Merfolk
Game 1: My opponent starts with multiple Wastelands but I manage to stick Manastones. Eventually, Platinum Emperion comes down and my opponent is totally tapped out on permission. He misused his permission in this match up, piercing Voltaic Key and letting me play around Daze.
SB: +1 Crucible of Worlds, +1 All is Dust, -1 Steel Hellkite, -1 Karn Liberated
Game 2: My opponent gets aggressive with Wastelands again. I try to play around his permission but he has double Daze for my Grim Monolith unfortunately. He also manages to find Force for Wurmcoil and I die.
Game 3: I open with Chalice for 1 to cut off Pierce, Vial and Cursecatcher. I follow with Grim Monolith. He throws a Daze at it to no avail. I follow with Hellkite and he has nothing (should have held that Daze I guess). I begin Porting him very aggressively and he throws some Cliques in the way. He eventually dies to the Kite.
1-0 (2-1)
Round 2: Doug with Esper Stoneblade
Game 1: My opponent opens with Inquisition and whiffs. I rip Phyrexian Revoker. I slam it and name Stoneforge Mystic; the logic here is that he is either playing Stoneblade or BUG since he fetched an Underground Sea. Stoneblade seems much more likely. Turns out I was right and Revoker begins the beats and he doesn't want to tap out. I attack his mana really aggressively, Porting, Wasting and throwing out Lodestone Golems. He dies shortly after.
SB: +1 Karn Liberated, +1 Crucible of Worlds, +2 Thorn of Amethyst, -4 Steel Hellkite
Game 2: My opponent starts with nothing. I run out a Revoker; he Forces. He plays his Mystic and gets Batterskull. I play a second Revoker and it gets removed (I think Sworded). I then run out Chalice for 1. He has Batterskull for a few turns and gets me to 10. I slam Wurmcoil. Turns out my opponent is holding 3 Swords to Plowshares and dies to the Engine (and a second one) as I begin Porting his lands again.
2-0 (4-1)
Game 3: Kyle with UW Miracles
Game 1: This game is a little lackluster. I have a decent amount of mana and a Revoker on top. We durdle around for a while and he eventually plays Jace. I slay Jace with Revoker and a Factory that pumps itself off Voltaic Key since he Fatesealed. I also run out Lodestone Golem at some point. He taps out to play Snapcaster and flashback Swords to take down Revoker and Lodestone. I run out Karn and begin eating his lands. The game is over shortly after.
SB: +2 Thorn of Amethyst, -2 Steel Hellkite (not exactly sure how to board in this match up yet since I am still trying to figure it out)
Game 2: I run out a fast Lodestone Golem. He exiles it with Swords. I drop Thorn of Amethyst. I'm not sure how much it hampers his mana. It does prevent him from hardcasting Entreat for 1 Angel to block.
Kyle's hands in these games were pretty poor however so I'm not sure how much I can take away from this. He was really light on removal and game 1 he drew tons of permission after I stuck Lodestone Golem. He does still top 8 by going 2-0 afterwards.
3-0 (6-1)
Round 4 and 5: ID
I'm a lock for top 8 so I double draw.
We chop the prize (125 store credit) and play for the points.
Quarterfinals: Nich with Zombies
Nich is one the members of our group from Ithaca and I was really excited he top 8'd with Zombies. Unfortunately, this match up is god awful for him. Any other match up in the top 8 would have been great for him.
Game 1: I don't remember this game too well but I'm sure that I played robots and he died. He whiffs on a turn 1 Cabal Therapy naming Chalice.
SB: +4 Trinisphere, -2 Karn Liberated, -2 Steel Hellkite
Game 2: He opens empty and I play Chalice for 1. He Disenchants it and I respond with Lodestone Golem and Waste his white source. A few turns later, he's dead since I kill all his mana.
4-0 (8-1)
Semifinals: Steve with Maverick
Game 1: This game involves turn 3 Karn and Revoker on Pridemage. He dies shortly after.
SB: +3 Cursed Totem, +2 All is Dust, +1 Karn Liberated, +1 Crucible of Worlds, -3 Metalworker, -4 Steel Hellkite
Game 2: This game is about the same. I run out a fast Karn and rip apart his mana. Karn exiled an enormous number of cards but I kept swinging at him in the rare case he draws an insane new 7. I probably could have won with a restart but I was already winning so I decided not to press my luck. He dies slowly to a Factory and Karn ends the game at 20ish counters.
5-0 (10-1)
Finals: Kevin with Nic Fit
Game 1: I start with Chalice for 1. He wishes for Malestrom Pulse and I begin Porting and Wasting him out of the game. Eventually a robot comes and beats him to death.
SB: +1 Karn Liberated, -1 All is Dust
Game 2: I run out Chalice at 1 again and he Wishes for Thoughtseize (oops for him) and then I start porting his black sources (oops for me). He has mana but I put pressure on him while Porting him. He goes down shortly after.
6-0 (12-1)
So overall a good day for me. I spent my credit on Death and Taxes stuff (mostly Karaki) and two Foil Revokers.
The list still feels really strong. 4 Thorn of Amethyst was overkill; 2 is plenty. I might go back to Duplicant or Spine of Ish Sah to deal with Sneak Show. Haven't decided yet. I thought Burn was poor but it is better than I thought; I just needed to play it better.
Thanks for reading!
Nice report. Back to Back must feal so good.
Zirath - congrats!
Is there a link to decklists online?
I commented on one of your previous posts. I've made some changes to me deck based upon our discussions. I think our maindecks are the same except I run +1 Mishra's Factory, -1 Buried Ruin. Maindeck Ancient Tombs have been giving me a lot of problems, however, I'm not sure there is a solution. Crystal Vein doesn't seem to cut it, but self-inflicting 6-8 damage vs. certain decks is too much.
In the sideboard, I am running 4 Cursed Totem, 2 Duplicant, and 2 Crucible of Worlds (in the place of your 4 Thorns). I've never boarded in the Duplicants, so I may try 2 Thorns in their place. I found certain match-ups I needed Cursed Totem (Elves and Maverick), hence the increase to 4. Additionally, I like Crucible in this deck - I was originally running them main over the Revokers, but your previous post caused me to switch. I've been happy with the switch, as Revoker has more first game interaction (at worst, it's a 2 power beater).
Why remove the Steel Hellkite vs. Merfolk? It seems Steel Hellkite for 2 = AWESOME in this match-up.
Mythic is working on getting the top 8 online. Some internet issues.
The trick to Ancient Tomb is to plan out your plays carefully. When you open your 7, you should quickly determine how you will play the game. Ancient Tomb can deal you a lot of damage, but if you use it carefully, you can keep yourself from death.
Thorn is something I am trying for the Miracle deck. It is more effective against Jace decks than Trinisphere since I can not rely on Wasting them. My last two slots are still in flux. I will probably go with Duplicant or Spine of Ish Sah for now. Defense Grid is another temping option for Miracles and permission heavy decks, as is Batterskull for RUG.
Merfolk play Coralhelm Commander, Kira and sometimes board in Sower. Those things make Hellkite very sad. I would rather have an All is Dust or Karn over the 4th Hellkite since Karn does provide an answer to flying beaters.
Just bought the deck, it looks so fun!
Awesome report, Zirath! Since I am a Goblin player who still uses a set of Rishadan Ports, I fully support your move to deny your opponent's mana to oblivion.
By the way, is your list geared towards your meta specifically? How would you change it if you were to enter an SCG tournament? Your list looks interesting. I really want to try it out. I have all the locks but none of the robots. lol
My maindeck is not tuned for a specific meta; it is simply a bunch of very strong cards. Platinum Emperion, Karn, Hellkite and Dust trump a lot of decks consistently. The list is made to be generally strong game 1 and then you board in the extra disruptive elements based on the match up.
If I were to go to an SCG, I would play close to my current list. The match ups I have encountered that are weak tend to be UR Delver and Affinity since they can sneak in damage while you are trying to set up. Otherwise, I would cut down to 2 Thorn of Amethyst. I haven't decided what to do with the last two slots. I could try Batterskull to improve the aggro match ups slightly.
Man, this deck looks sick. This makes me seriously question my idea that Workshop-esque decks would never be viable in Legacy after too many failed attempts at trying to make it work. Nice back to back ass kicking!
