    Mono - G Hexproof Stompy

    Hello everyone! This is the first time posting on these forums, so I apologize if I commit any forum faux pas.

    A little background - I have never seriously considered playing legacy because there is simply nowhere near me to play. However, my LGS has decided that if we can get enough interest in legacy, they will start holding events (which is super exciting). I knew that legacy is pretty steep to start building, so I came here and started browsing for mono-colored decks (knowing that lands contribute large chunks to legacy deck price tags). I found Berserk Stompy, which I liked because I'm comfortable playing green and its a very straightforward strategy. The only thing I didn't like was how all-in it was on berserk. So I took that list, and started researching top placing legacy decks to see what I need to prepare for. Here's the list I came up with.

    //Land
    2 Pendelhaven
    1 Treetop Village
    18 Forest

    //Creatures
    4 Gladecover Scout
    2 Scryb Sprite
    4 Silhana Ledgewalker
    4 Skinshifter
    3 Strangleroot Geist
    4 Dungrove Elder

    //Enchantments
    2 Sylvan Library
    4 Rancor
    4 Seal of Strength

    //Instants & Sorceries
    4 Giant Growth
    2 Green Sun's Zenith
    2 Mutagenic Growth

    //Sideboard
    3 Relic of Progenitus
    3 Choke
    3 Vexing Shusher
    3 Gleeful Sabotage
    3 Mindbreak Trap

    The deck itself is comprised of fast, resilient creatures and a few heavy hitters for late game. I tried to take berserk stompy and trade out potential burst for more stability. My few concerns are:

    1) By having some hexproof creatures and some not, am I providing my opponent a clear decision tree on how best to use counters/removal?

    2) Is this deck too soft to counters?

    3) are Skinshifter and Dungrove Elder beefy enough late game threats to combat Tarmogoyf and Knight of the Reliquary? (I'm still not certain if Goyf would be good in this deck; I playtested with him and he averages 2/3).

    I don't know what kind of meta my LGS will have, but I've tried to prepare my SB for my worst matchups (aka, anything with blue). Choke and Shusher should help vs. RUG delver and stoneblade, sabotage is for random affinity, relic for reanimator/dredge, and mindbreak to combat storm. The only thing I don't have a direct answer for would be something like pox (dodges hexproof handily). It's probably not a huge contender, but if it shows up in my meta, would something like lifeforce be enough to help?

    I would really appreciate any feedback on this, especially regarding creature/pump choices.

    Unless you have something like infect or double strike that multiplies your return going on, you're likely to be better off with burn than pump effects.

    A big payoff on hexproof is that the opponent's targeted removal is dead in his hand. When you mix in shroudless creatures, it reduces that benefit.

    Honestly, the list looks weak. The creatures you're using are a very slow win condition by legacy standards, and you don't have any disruptive or controlling elements. Going all-in may be risky, but you can get speed that way.

    Thank you for the reply.

    I'm thinking that Infect may be the better path for me, at this point (bursty, mono-g, doesn't need zerk).

    back to the drawing board then.

    Isn't an effect like winter orb or thorn standard for mono G stompy?

    Infect invigorate UG can be quite strong.

    I've seen thorn in SB before.

    UG infect seems really good.

    I can post a bit more about it when I get to a computer.

    Ink moth
    Agent
    Elf
    Unstable mutation
    invigorate
    Vines of vast wood (in some builds)
    Might of old Krosa
    Counters/protection
    Pendalhaven
    Rancor

    Link to a list

    I've played around with lists but I'm not sure what the best way to set this up is. Especially with delvers and friends moving around. If you want to develop that deck I'd be happy to try and develop it along with you. However I'll just leave the idea out there right now and try not to derail your Mono G Stompy thread any further until you make up your mind.

    =)

    please do. I think I can figure out the basics (blighted agent, glistener elf, invig, mutagenic?) but I'd love to hear the details.

    UG Infect also offers access to countermagic like FoW. I think Noble Hierarch is needed, too.

    Of course going UG Infect means spending alot more money.

    And honestly: I won't go for Stompy without Infect. It's too slow. There are a lot viable mono colored decks around. If you want to play green, why not Elfball?

    Needs more Berserk :)

    @Janosch - I've tried playing elfball, and I'm just not into it. What other mono-color decks would you suggest? I'm definately open to ideas.

    @boneclub - yes, yes it does :)

    Berserk Stompy shouldn't be as all-in as you say. The old successful builds I've seen could play both aggro and combo game.

    If you think Berserk is too expensive, tho, you can easily build monogreen stompy these days, with good additions like Dismember and Ranger's Guile.

    On the other hand, it's really hard to get as consistent as Burn, for burn is waaay more tested than monogreen stompy.
    If you fail to explain the reason behind your choice, technically, it's the wrong choice.

    I suggest The Gate (Mono-B), Mono-W-Control (MightyQuinn), Mono-U-Control (Many Variants, (like CounterTop for instance). You can also play StupidLife (Mono-W). Burn is viable, too. Mono-B Pox is also an option.

    Re: Mono - G Hexproof Stompy

    My biggest concern with the "all-in" builds of zerk stompy was how they handle threats like KotR or Goyf if they don't get a bonkers t2 or 3 kill. Just seems like those guys shut down all the 2/x weenies pretty hard. That was the whole reason I tried ditching zerk and adding in some fat (dungrove). I still have weenies + pump for early game, but the late game is a bit more reliable.

    I am probably undervaluing the potency of the 2/x beats stompy packs.

    I agree with burn vs. stompy. They pack so much redundancy that it's hard to put the breaks on them.

    I know you are abandoning this idea but just for completeness sake Slippery bogle is a card, it even pitches to force!!! lol

    Re: Mono - G Hexproof Stompy

    Don't give up on mono-G stompy as an idea.
    It has merit, just be aware of what other decks have going on that can prevent your plans - and change you card selections to suit.

    hexproof & regeneration, or pseudo-unblockable should be your first thought, or even creatures that hit hard and fast.
    Troll Ascetic, Thrun, Silhana Ledgewalker are all good, as is Groundbreaker.
    Groundbreaker loves Berserk.
    Another option is infect - both Mono-G & UG infect are pretty good.

    Be mindful that a lot of Legacy decks don't run many creatures, whilst others run none!
    So as long as you can get your creature spells past the discard/counter, you should be able to beat face. I'd also look at enchantments/artifacts that screw your opponent, giving you more time to get the beats through.
    Lets say you've got three of more creatures on the board, and play Winter Orb to stop them doing much for a few turns. I wouldn't play this, but you get what I mean.

    Even though I know this is a bad idea, we have a legacy event coming up and I'm going to sleeve up this mess and run it into the ground.

    Hopefully I learn something!

    I don't really see the point of the 1 mana 1/1 flier, highly underwhelming. I would replace them and the Skinshifter's with some number of Noble Hierarch and Scavenging Ooze.

    Ooze combats a lot of legacy decks by himself, noble hierarchs are both accelerants and offensive creatures. You can drop a Dungrove Elder, slap a rancor on him, and start swinging with exalted triggers until they die.

    You might find some ideas in this thread. I love the idea of mono-G decks in Legacy, and feel that it's only a matter of time before they have some success.
