Thread: [Deck] Goblins

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

You dont Need to play Grip vs Esper. Just another Tuktuk in the Sideboard is enough (it is tutorable and nearly uncounterable thanks to Cavern/Vial).

Seal is only 2CC and you can cast it pierce proof on turn 4 and faster if the opponent has tapped out. It is safe to discard. So seal is enough against hate Enchantments. Force of Will is the only real problem with the card but nearly all magic cards have that problem. Grip will often get discarded in the esper matchups.

I would never run three colors. I have tested it and I miss the Ports. So stick with Grip and Relics or give Rest in Peace/Seal/Tuktuk along with Thalia (not main deck thalia) a chance ;)

Ok i will give myself a heard and i'm going to test Rw Gobos. I will play 3 Ports and 3 Thalia (MAIN). SB would be Chalice/Peace/Seal/another Tuktuk.
Thalia + Port + Waste really looks nice! ^^

This is my thought too. To beat Esper, you need to be the most consistent you can, not dillute your deck, so the more goblin cards you play, more you have chances of winning.
Edit: and is actually quite nice that Inquisition can't take Tuktuk from our hand. =]

You could try adding 2(-4) x Boggart Harbinger if you want to make the deck more consistent. BH also helps defend some of your tutor targets from discard.

On a side note: if you run the green splash and want to arm yourself against show and tell a bit more you might as well run: Seal of Primordium. It's the color shifted Seal of Cleansing.

In my experience, Prospector is the MVP against Esperblade. You need to kill SFM immediately, and sandbag your Scrapper/ Hooligan. They are much better here than K.Grip. Haven't tried the W splash before but I had no big problems with the match up. Thoughtseize can be a pain, though.

I agree...Skirk Prospector is so good at not losing to Jitte and Batterskull. Also, the skirk/Sharpshooter combo is really good against decks you cant attack with. Today I played against a deck that played an enchantment that gave all creatures pro red, then played moat...I could have won, but I boarded out Prospector for RIP...crap.

I used to not like him, but now I see that it is super beast in these areas. Also, Grips are really needed against those darn enchantments that do random things, like moat. Naya is the way I am settled with...and I play 4 ports, wastes, and caverns.

Talking about sideboarding, is storm combo still around a lot, or is it disappearing. I run 3 Mindbreak Traps, but am thinking of taking them out for more Grips and stuff.

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

Also the skirp/sharpshooter combo is really good against Deathrite Shamans. I won a game against 3 (!!) of them with the combo!

And i'm also of the opinion that if youre playing 3 Seals and 1 Tuk tuk you dont need Grip. Sasan and i am testing it right now with a Rw splash.

Yesterday i went 1:2 against Maverick because i didnt found a second land in two games but against RUG Delver i won 3:0! RiP youre great! ^^

Wondering how you can resolve a RiP vs. RUG it is affected by Spell Pierce, Force, maybe Daze but especially Stifle. RUG just needs to stifle the cip trigger and Goyf and co are still bigger than your dudes.
    Gobbos: Kings of flavortext!

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

well Relic is counterable, too so it is not a problem that Rest in Peace can be stifled. It is just a win option. You can win vs Rug without sideboarding. It is just nice to have an Auto-Win option if RiP resolves.

When you play RiP the right time it can resolve. Nevertheless i had 2 in hand the second game so... ^^

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

Hi, played in a small local tournament this week. I played with this list

    4 Lackey
    4 Warchief
    4 Matron
    4 Ringleader
    4 Incinerator
    3 MWM
    2 Piledriver
    2 SGC
    1 Krenko
    1 Chieftain
    1 TSH
    1 Sharpshooter
    1 Skirk Prospector
    1 Stingcouger
    1 Tarfire

    4 Vial

    4 Cavern
    4 Wasteland
    4 Mountain
    3 Rishadan Port
    2 Taiga
    5 Fetch

    sb:
    1 Stingcouger
    2 K.Grip
    3 Pyroblast
    3 Needle
    3 Relic of Progenitus
    3 Pyrokinesis

    I played 3 rounds against:
    R1: Smallpox, 2-0.
R2: Combo elves, 2-0. I was little lucky in this match because myös opp. played Glimpse on both games and also Regal Force on second but didn't drew anything relevant.
R3: Rb Goblin (perish on sb), 0-2. I think everything that can go wrong, went wrong on this match. We start throwing D10 dice and my opp. throws 2. I'm like that's easy to beat and throw 1!!! So my opp. will go first. G1 I mull ton 5 (should have gone 4, but I thought I was allready way too behind) and my opp goes t1 Lackey, t2 Lackey drops Warchief and he plays Sharpshooter -> I scoop. G2 we both start with Lackey and those trade. My opp. has a slow start and just plays vials. During the game I play two Ringleaders, draw a lot of goblins but don't see any matron or removal. Opp. has active Krenko and rides to the victory.

I liked my list and will play it again.

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

I too played in a small tourney last night. With my Rwg list. I cut Seal of Cleansing from the SB and moved Sharpshooter from MD to SB. Added a Chieftain MD in his place as I'm expecting to see more and more E Plague decks these days.

    R1 MUD
G1 ended after 3 Krenko activations and a swing with 52 goblins, one of which was the Chieftain.
G2 I probably would have won had I been on the play (lackey + TSH in opener) but I was on the draw and didn't have the Pyrokinesis I needed to clear his board before he could get Welder, Metalworker, and Lightning Greeves online.
G3 again ended with mutliple Krenko activations. He just didn't have an answer to an active Krenko.
    1-0

    R2 UWg Control
G1 I mulled, drew too many lands and lost. I did have one cool play though where I attacked with a Lackey (Vial @ 1) into his open board and Mutavault. He activated the Vault and I Gempalmed it before blocks. When he realized how Mutavault works with Gempalm he threw a Swords at Lackey, and I responded by Vialing in Prospector. Burning out his Vault didn't put him far enough behind though, and i drew too many blanks.
G2 I mulled, didn't draw enough lands, and he played a timely Wasteland.
    1-1

    R3 Infect
G1 I was bummed to see Infect across the table because it's a MU I've always had trouble with. Turns out Thalia has changed the MU a LOT. I was on the Draw. He led with Hierarch, I with Vial. He played an Infect guy. I Vialed in Lackey and Gemplamed the Infect creature. He played another Infect creature. I upped Vial and brought in Thalia. He swung in for the lethal attack, only Thalia kept him from Invigorate + Berserk. I took 6 Poison. Next turn I Gempalmed his Infector and breezed through to the finish.
G2 was a lot like G1, only my opponent mulled this time and I had more removal.
    2-1

    R4 Merfolk
G1 I was manascrewed and lost.
G2 I was manascrewed and won (you have 3 lords? i have a Piledriver. W)
G3 we didn't play since we ID'd anyway.

Have we fallen out of love with warren instigator?

For my 2 drops i play 3 x MWM, 3 x Piledriver, 2 x Stingscourger and 2 x Warren Instigator. In my mono red chieftain build I find that if a lackey is removed on turn 1, then following up turn 2 with an instigator adds pressure. I only play 2 WI as I want them to back up my 4 lackeys. I play tarfires and gempalms to clear the path for my lackey effects.

So why no love for warren instigator? I love matroning to whatever i need with his double strike.

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

Personally, I was never really into Warren Instigator. I've played him but he's just not that great for multiple reasons. Basically, MWM does what you want to do and WI is unnecessary, especially since Cavern of Souls was printed you bypass counters easily. Mogg War Marshall is soooo good in this deck it's silly. He has synergy with every Goblin in the deck, chump blocks, leaves guys on the board if you get Terminus'd, Deeded, or whatever. All for the very affordable price of 1R. I think that if you aren't playing with him then you're crazy. ;)

Well you won't get a token if your opponent casts a terminus because it triggers when it goes to the graveyard, anyways I think MWM has to be in every goblin deck, he's so good at chumpblocking, works really well with Skirk Prospector and Krenko and if you have a Warchief in play you'll get 2 goblins in play for R.

    Re: [DTB] Goblins

In the thread we have in Brazil, we tested and discussed a lot about WI.

To play WI we made a lot of changes in the goblins monoR MD, using more chieftains than warchiefs, adding more removal, etc. The decks gets more aggresive, connect a lot more, but one of the problems that I found is that sometimes you have a hand with 1~2 lackeys 1 WI a removal and land.. It became very commom to you connect with a lackey/WI and dont have anything good to drop.

MWM is worst than WI in general, in my opinion, but in the deck we are playing it has to many more interactions that makes him very good. He give us time, more goblins for gempalm, a free untap for shapshooter, a redritual with warchief and skirk, it is better with piledriver than WI, gives more tokens with krenko... and that goes on.

And the RR he asks is kind of complicate. Run WI and Rishadan Ports is not very nice.. sometimes you got a frozen hand.

At last, WI make the deck more aggressive, and that is not what I think goblins need now. We usually can win at turn 3 against if nothing stop us, and if it does, its better to have a mid/late game that can win, and that is something WI doenst do.

i noticed that jrw1985 runs in his r/g/w list 3 thalia main board and 3 chalices of the void sideboard.
What happens if we play both thalia and chalice ? for example, if I play a chalice at 0 and then play a thalia, can my opponent play his 0 cost spells paying one mana, or would they get countered anyway because of chalice? The same question is valid for a chalice at 1, with the opponent playing his one cost spells paying two.
If the spells don't get countered, chalice + thalia seem bad.

Thalia doesn't change the casting cost of noncreature spells, she just makes them cost 1 more. It's a subtle difference, but important. Trinisphere changes casting costs by making spells cost 3. See the difference?

So Thalia + Chalice @ 0 makes your opponent pay 1 to cast Lotus Petal, then counters the Petals because Petal still has a converted casting cost of 0.
