Thread: [Deck] Imperial Painter

    Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter

Well I took RW painter to gencon and tried it out in two tournaments. One was a very small 8 man, the other a decent sized legacy tournament.

In the 8 man I faced: RDW 2/1, BUG 2/1, Omni-Tell ID (0/2 when we played it out).
In the larger tournament I faced: BUG 1/2, Elves 1/1/1, Elves 0/2.

The list I played was the following:
    4 Painter Servant
    4 Imp Recruiter
    4 SS Guide
    2 Magus of the Moon
    1 Phyrexian Revoker
    1 G Welder
    1 Spellskite
    1 Jaya

    1 Chrome Mox
    1 L Petal
    2 E Tutor
    4 Grindstone
    4 P Blast
    3 R E Blast
    2 S D Top
    4 Blood Moon
    1 E Bridge

    4 A Tomb
    4 city of T
    4 Arid Mesa
    2 G Furnace
    3 Mountain
    1 Plains
    2 Plateu

    Sideboard:
    1 R E Blast
    2 P Revoker
    4 Rest in Peace
    1 Helm of Ob.
    3 Thorn of Amethyst
    1 E Bridge
    1 Manic Vandal
    1 Martyr of Ashes
    1 Siege-Gang Com.

I've realized and grown to appreciate how broken a turn 1 or 2 blood moon really is against most decks. My one win against elves was due to a turn 1 blood moon. He was running only one basic forest, and my red blasting it essentially ended the game. I also noticed that my main difficulty against aggro decks is emptying my hand fast enough to prevent attacks when I have a bridge in play.

I never got the siege-gang to work well, so I think something like figure of destiny might be better. I can understand running jaya in the sideboard rather than maindeck. She is slow. I am considering making the following changes:

MD: -1 Jaya, +1 Magus of the Moon
SB: -1 Siege, -3 thorn, +1 Peace Keeper, +1 Figure of Destiny, +1 Jaya, +1 ethersworn cannonist.

I seemed to not side in the thorns very often, and when they finally hit play, they didn't make a major impact on the game state.

I gotta ask, how is that white splash working out for you?

It's been good, I know as a one of its kinda janky, but the card is so powerful. It just locks so many decks out of the game. That being said were I to cut I would add a Spellskite for sure.

Also for those interested I did a short report on my trip to Canada:

I hasn't really been a problem actually. I think I have mulliganed once when my opening hand had a plains instead of a mountain. Other than that, it's been fine. I was able to cast enlightned tutor to grab blood moon in one game and grind stone in another at the tournaments and durring play tests. Also having RiP combo in the sideboard made my second game against omni-tell very aggressive. My loss in that was due to him having an answers to each time I cast RiP.

I threw together a very, very poor list yesterday for a local 18 man tournament.. Lost the first match to Shardless BUG, and were under pressure, before taking the next 4 matches, ending 3rd in the swiss, going to the semifinals.

I lost the semifinal match against U/R Omnitell/Emrakul something-something.. I'd be in the finals, if I hadn't forgotten my Jaya's back home xD

Long story short... I'm confident that this is the deck I'm taking to GP Washington in November.... The moon effects have never been better in this meta :D

Has any of you tinkered for putting Jitte's in the MB?

This is my actual build, i'm not sure about the board yet but i like the maindeck very much as it is

Holy crap, Duplicant is AWESOME creature removal with welders!! As long as they are on anything you can win!! Steal a Lab Maniac/Emrakul against omnishow, Take goyf after golf or bob etc from bug, hell even a stone forge mystic!! I am going to try that :)

I was very disappointed. Although, even if he would have fetched up a Simian Spirit Guide to play the Top he was still in rough shape. Still, there's a difference between staying alive and dying in round nine of nine in a tournament like that and it wound up costing him in game three; you could tell he looked a little deflated.

Additionally, I would have drawn in game three, but that's just me.

Didn't get to see the match, but glad to see it snuck in top 8, Death and Taxes isn't too bad of a match up for quarters, so good luck to him.

Death & Taxes is what he lost to round 9. The taxes player made quite a few misplays, the round probably should've been 2-0 instead of 2-1.

Nothing revolutionary. Should be good inspiration to all beginner pilots that the core deck is extremely solid in any tournament

stuff like this happens all the time. with the greedy mana bases people play now, someone packing bloodmoon would sure to win.

I wonder what his matchups were. Zero grave hate plus no way to deal with eldrazi triggers/alt win cons means you need to run pretty hot, which he did. Congrats nonetheless.
