I moved to Denver about a month ago to go to grad school and I was curious about good shops/places to play. I've run across a few comic book shops that sell packs, but no place to really pick up singles/trade or play.

Welcome to Denver! The most active source of information for Legacy in the area is Front Range Legacy. Here's the Facebook page where event updates and announcements get posted: https://www.facebook.com/frontrangelegacy. Front Range Legacy has been organizing weekly Legacy events that alternate between two stores: I Want More Comics and Total Escape Games. In fact, there is a tournament tomorrow at 12 noon at I Want More Comics.
There have also been monthly Legacy events firing in Boulder at Gamer's Guild (next event still tbd) and at Black Gold in Denver (last Wednesday of the month, 6:30pm.)
I know there are a couple other stores that are running Legacy south of downtown Denver, but I don't have any info on those.

So...what are prizes like at these little gatherings? I live a good 4 hours away from Denver, but there is no Magic scene as far as tourney play goes here and am curious if it's worth a monthly trip. How big are these events as far as number of people? Sorry, just curious.

Denver Central Games has Legacy every Monday night at 7.
Not totally sure on the other stores, but I Want More Comics events pay out to Top4 in the form of 125% of entry fees as store credit. They have a pretty good selection of singles there (including eternal ones), so it's pretty good in my opinion!
We had been alternating weeks between I Want More Comics and Total Escape Games, but attendance seems to have dropped off at Total Escape, so it seems that we're mostly just bi-weekly at I Want More these days.
And there is also weekly legacy at Denver Central Games on Monday evenings, and the last Wednesday of every month at Black Gold. I'm not sure what the prize support at either of these are, as they are a bit too far south for me to get to after work.
/edit: also, in terms of size of events, we used to have a bigger crowd, but lately we've been in the 10-14 range at IWMC. I think since SCG stopped coming to Denver there hasn't been a big incentive for anyone to play the format... Been trying to work with I Want More Comics to see if we can put on a 1k event sometime to see if we can attract some more players. Haven't gotten that figured out yet - at I Want More's GPT for GP Denver, we had about 40 people show up, so it's certainly possible to get somewhat larger events...

Sounds awesome. I'm going to start talking to my buddies and see if we can make it before the end of the year at least once to check it out and see if it's really worth the 3 1/2 hour drive...lol. There is nothing where I live and I can't move until my GF finishes her third degree. Then, I hope to move to a place that has some semblance of a Legacy scene. Probably Manhattan, KS (KSU), but possibly Colorado (University of Colorado)-still somewhat up in the air, but much to my dismay it's leaning towards Manhattan.

I hear Boulder to be a bit on the pricey side. We are 'college kids' and I'm not sure the drive to school each day from there to CU is acceptable either. While we don't have tournaments near us, we do heavy and elaborate testing. I will definitely give a head's up before we attend. Hopefully 'fresh blood' will allow for a larger tournament for all of us!

Yeah, Boulder can be a little expensive, but the surrounding areas aren't too bad. The good news is that if you're here, the drive to CU is just fine - you can walk or take the bus with a maximum 10 minute ride from anywhere!
