In the wake of the recent counterfeiting issue, I've decided to check out some things regarding deck costs and such. Some thoughts:
1) Modern was introduced as an affordable eternal format, turns out it still remains quite expensive. The cheapest decks in the top 16 of GP Prague is U/R Delver, URW Control and Infect starting at 400-450 bucks. the B/G/x decks cost a whopping 1200-1500$ depending on the version. An average deck is about 600-700 dollars. I'm not sure if this is an affordable price for the masses. If there will be a MM2, Wizards should absolutely start with fetches and the rares that weren't included in th set (Grove, Hierarch, Clique/Bob/Goyf at rare etc.)
2) Any rogue deck / cards played with reasonable success in an event will be automatically cornered at a moment's notice, see Tin Fists. The deck didn't even make the top 16. Same thing with pros, see Disrupting Shoal. I'm willing to bet that if the next day a CFB guy 4-0's a daily Legacy with Nourishing Lich, either the Shoal, Lich or Wurm gets immediately bought out. In fact, if I were a CFB member I would deliberately play rogue decks in order to sell cheap garbage at an inflated price at my store. Take a look at the price of Zur the Enchanter.
3) Any playable Mythic from 1 block or 1 year ago is / will be at least 20 dollars. Craterhoof Behemoth is currently 12$ and rising, Griselbrand is 20-25$, even Elesh Norn and Consecrated Sphinx are 15 bucks. I won't even touch stuff like Eldrazi or Karn or Liliana. It seems like it's worth picking up every archetype staple rare or mythic at 10-15 bucks as the price won't go lower. After half a year or so I totally expect Snapcaster, DRS and Revelation to be cornered.
All in all this makes me glad I sold most of my inflated stuff last year. No matter how you cut it I can't justify paying these prices when video games are 50$, an average board game costs 30-40$, an XboX with kinect is 400$.
Fist of Suns is funny.

Just some thoughts that I had when reading what you posted. The prices for the decks you mentioned do not seem that high to me especially in a format where the cards do not rotate. If you make smart decisions about the core cards you purchase, the money you put out should be minimal. Standard players usually have that much in their decks and are forced to dump their cards every few years.
Don't worry about inflated cards. So what if some card increased in value overnight? If you were not playing Disrupting Shoal, why would it bother you that it increased in value? You can cost yourself a lot of money trading good cards for cards that are unproven. If you are lucky to have one of these cards, sell right away and buy some SCMs and DRSs because these are proven to be good.
Also funny that hideous FNM foil Therapy is cheaper than plain old Therapy. Another card that was $2-3 from 08' until last year ... if you couldn't forgo one trip to the fucking Chipotle to buy a set and are mad now then it's your fault.
Guys, someone is buying up Foil promo Cards like Gaea's Cradle (+50€), Stifle (+45€) and Natural Order (+40€) off MCM causing a price explosion like shown in brackets...
Edit: Maybe time to sell my Elves...

Should this be the "bitch about the price of all the things" thread, then? This is a Magic board, we're talking about Magic, all the other things are out of scope. How is that not implicit?
I mean typically the 'grand scheme of things' argument is applied as a counter to people's justification for shitty high card prices because "it's only a game", so given the context of where this discussion is taking place, where are you even coming from?
