Re: [Deck] T.E.S. - The EPIC Storm

So I wrote some coverage of some testing games because of the upcoming Grand Prix.
The idea behind this is to put them up for discussion and to learn from my mistakes as to improve my game before the Grand Prix in Paris starts. I guess newcomers to the archetype can learn from them as well, maybe even more from the discussion.

I made a lot of mistakes for it has been a long day of magic, but so will the Grand Prix be.

    Team America – Preboard - Game 3

I played 6 matches total preboard against Team America and didn’t get to test postboard. However this matchup is quite hard and interesting.

My opponent keeps his seven and I keep these on the draw:

    Lotus Petal
    LED
    Chrome Mox
    Lotus Petal
    Cabal Therapy
    City of Brass
    Chrome Mox

That is enough mana and 1 protection-spell. Double Chrome Mox is a pain though. The hand is ok on the draw.
He starts with Underground Sea and his Thoughtseize(18) takes my LED. I draw an Underground Sea and play the City of Brass. He drops a Tropical Island and a Tarmogoyf(2/3) and passes the turn. I draw a LED and drop a Sea before passing the turn. He draws his card for the turn and taps his Tropical Island to cast a Ponder. He chooses to shuffle, draws and plays a Misty Rainforest. The Rainforest(17) fetches a Tropical Island and casts another Tarmogoyf. Goyf(3/4) attacks (17) and he passes the turn. I draw an Infernal Tutor and start of with a Lotus Petal(1), Lotus Petal(2) and cast a Cabal Therapy(3) off of the Sea, naming FoW. It hits and I see his hand still holds True-Name Nemesis and Abrupt Decay. I cast LED(4), Mox(-)(5), Mox(-)(6), crack both Petals for (BB), Infernal Tutor(7), tap City of Brass (16) and crack LED in response (RRRB), ETW(8). 16 Goblins enter the battlefield and I sacrifice one to Cabal Therapy to remove his True-Name Nemesis. When TNN gets to block 2 or more goblins I deal less damage.
He draws and attacks with his 5/6 Tarmogoyfs (6). I draw Therapy and cast it to which he responds with an Abrupt Decay. I name Abrupt Decay for every other card except for FoW he would have played already. I miss and see he has drawn a Thoughtseize. I attack with 13 goblins leaving 2 behind (5). He draws and scoops.

    Team America – Preboard - Game 4

I will play first and I keep this:

    Gitaxian Probe
    Infernal Tutor
    Burning Wish
    Rite of Flame
    Gemstone Mine
    Ponder
    Ad Nauseam

He also keeps his 7 and I start off with a Gitaxian Probe(18). He reveals: Bayou, Verdant Catacombs, Liliana of the Veil, Abrupt Decay, Delver of Secrets, Daze and Ponder. I draw Brainstorm for the turn and cast a Ponder. I look at LED, Probe and Infernal Tutor and put the LED on top of the Tutor, drawing the Gitaxian Probe. He plays Catacombs and cracks it (19) for an Underground Sea followed by a Delver. I draw LED and play the Probe (16) seeing he has drawn a Goyf. I draw the Infernal Tutor and cast Brainstorm, drawing Dark Ritual, LED and Lotus Petal. I put the Dark Ritual on top of the Ad Nauseam and pass the turn. His Delver doesn’t flip in his upkeep and he casts Ponder. He shuffles, draws his card and attacks with the Delver(15) after which he plays a Bayou and ends the turn. I draw Dark Ritual and at this rate I know he has Daze, Decay, Liliana, Goyf and 2 unknown cards in hand. I can play around the daze and since he just has one island in play he can’t cast a second one. So the two unknown cards have to be blue card and FoW. I play Lotus Petal(1), remove the last counter of Gemstone Mine to cast a Rite of Flame(2). Rite of Flame catches a Daze(3), to which I respond with a Dark Ritual(4) of the Petal. Both resolve (RRBB) and I proceed to Infernal Tutor(5)(RB) for a third LED, LED(6), LED(7), LED(8), Infernal Tutor(9) and crack 2 LEDS (BBBRRR), Burning Wish(10), Tendrils of Agony(11).

    Team America – Preboard - Game 5

My opponent keeps his 7 and so do I:

    Lotus Petal
    Gemstone Mine
    Silence
    Infernal Tutor
    Rite of Flame
    Underground Sea
    Infernal Tutor

He starts with Misty Rainforest. I draw Ad Nauseam and start with Underground Sea. He draws and fetches(19) a Tropical Island, drops a Sea and casts a Tarmogoyf. I draw a Brainstorm and cast Petal before Brainstorm to play around Daze. Brainstorm draws LED, Cabal Therapy and Dark Ritual. I put back Ad Nauseam on top of Infernal Tutor. Gemstone Mine into Cabal Therapy(3) naming FoW. It hits and he reveals Brainstorm, Wasteland, Catacombs and Misty Rainforest. Dark Ritual(4) off the Petal(BBB), LED(5), Infernal Tutor(6) and crack LED (RRRB) into ETW(7). I sacrifice one of the 14 goblins for a Cabal Therapy to remove his Brainstorm. He draws and plays his Wasteland before passing the turn. I draw Infernal Tutor and attack with 13 green men. He blocks one with the Goyf and drops to 7 life. He draws a card for turn and scoops.

    Team America – Preboard - Game 6

On the play I keep this grindy hand with a some potential:

    Gemstone Mine
    Underground Sea
    Infernal Tutor
    City of Brass
    Burning Wish
    Ponder
    Ponder

My opponent keeps his 7 as well. I start of with a Sea and a Ponder. I see Bloodstained Mire, Brainstorm and Rite of Flame and decide to keep them for the Brainstorm+Fetchland. I draw the Mire and put Brainstorm on top of Rite of Flame. He starts with a Sea into Delver. I draw the Brainstorm, put Mire into play and cast the Brainstorm. I draw Rite of Flame, Lotus Petal and Ponder, putting back Ponder on top of City of Brass. I crack the Mire(19) to fetch a Sea and cast Ponder which meets a Daze(return Sea). Pass the turn.
The Delver doesn’t flip in his upkeep and he drops a Verdant Catacombs before Delver gets in the red zone (18). I draw a Lotus Petal for the turn, play Gemstone Mine and cast Burning Wish. It resolves and I fetch a Thoughtseize. My opponents Delver remains unflipt as he fetches(19) in his upkeep to get a Sea. He draws and attacks with the Delver(17) after playing his second Underground Sea. I draw a Polluted Delta, play it and cast Thoughtseize(15). He reveals: FOW, Delver, Decay, Tarmogoyf, Sea and Bayou. I take the Delver of Secrets and proceed with fetching a Volcanic Island(14), Petal(2), Petal(3), Rite of Flame(4)(RR), crack Petals and tap the Sea and Mine(RRBBBB), Infernal Tutor(5), Empty the Warrens(6). The Delver still remains a human and my opponent plays Bayou, Goyf and Deathrite Shaman. Ouch, that is too much for 12 goblins. I draw a Cabal Therapy and attack with 12 Goblins. 9 come through putting him on 10 life, while Delver dies. I cabal Therapy his Decay and pass the turn. Here I make the mistake by not taking the FoW. My opponent plays a Sea and Abrupt Decays a goblin. I draw a Polluted Delta and attack him to 4, with 5 goblins remaining and him having 2 Tarmogoyf and 1 Deathrite Shaman on board. He uses Deathrite Shaman end of turn to eat the Cabal Therapy(12). My opponent plays a second Deathrite Shaman and ends the turn. I draw Burning Wish and pass the turn as the Shaman eats a Delver in his graveyard(6). He draws and passes his turn immediately. I draw Rite of Flame and the Grapeshot kill is in range if the unknown card isn’t a blue one. Rite of Flame(1), in response the Shaman eats one in my graveyard(RR), Burning Wish(2). He has the Daze to pitch to FOW and I scoop them up.

    UWR Delver – Preboard - Game 1

I’m on the play and open these seven:

    Dark Ritual
    Burning Wish
    Burning Wish
    Infernal Tutor
    Underground Sea
    Silence
    Silence

This hand contains Dark Ritual, Sea and Infernal Tutor as useful cards and the rest is crappy. Even if I topdeck a LED it would just be 8 goblins on turn 2. My 6 looks much better:

    Lion’s Eye Diamond
    Ponder
    Polluted Delta
    Silence
    Lotus Petal
    Lotus Petal

6 Mana, protection and a cantrip. Perfect! I start by fetching an Underground Sea with Polluted Delta (19) and cast Ponder. I look at Bloodstained Mire, Polluted Delta and a LED. This doesn’t contain a business spell so I shuffle and draw a Burning Wish. Pass the turn. He starts of with a Tundra into Ponder. He keeps and draws his card before passing the turn. I draw a second LED for the turn and play Lotus Petal (1), Lotus Petal (2), crack Petal for Silence (3), resolves. LED (4), LED (5), Burning Wish (6) crack LEDS for RRRUUU. I don’t know if it’s Miracles or Delver so with RU in pool and a landdrop to be made I choose the DimRet-route instead of the 14 goblins which also folds against Stoneforge + removalspell. I remove 10 cards and my new seven is: 2x Gitaxian Probe, Lotus Petal, Ponder, Gemstone Mine, Cabal Therapy and LED.
Gitaxian Probe (7) reveals he’s on Patriot and I draw the Burning Wish for the lethal Tendrils.

    UWR Delver – Preboard - Game 2

On the draw I open this 7:

    Brainstorm
    Silence
    Polluted Delta
    Rite of Flame
    Bloodstained Mire
    Lotus Petal
    Lotus Petal

He starts of with a Volcanic Island into Delver, go. I draw Cabal Therapy, play Bloodstained Mire and pass the turn. His Delver doesn’t flip in his upkeep, draws and attacks with it (19). He puts Polluted Delta into play, cracks it for a Tundra (19) and plays Ponder. He smirks, shuffles and draws a card before passing the turn. I draw LED for turn, play Polluted Delta and fetch (18) a Volcanic Island with the Mire. Brainstorm resolves and draws Ponder, City of Brass and Burning Wish. I put back Ponder and City, and fetch (17) for a Sea. Lotus Petal (2), Petal (3), Silence (4). Silence resolves. Petal for R, Rite of Flame (RR)(5), LED (6), Wish+crack LED+Petal (7)(RRRR), EtW (8). I sacrifice one goblin to flashback Therapy naming Stoneforge Mystic. It hits and he still has Bolt, Fow and a Misty Rainforest. Pass the turn.
His delver doesn’t flip, he fetches a Tundra(18) still in his upkeep, draws his card for the turn and plays a rainforest before passing the turn. I draw a Cabal Therapy and choose to keep it up for future use as there is nothing that I want to remove from his hand at this rate. I attack and his Delver blocks (14 goblins left) (4). He draws and scoops.

    Death ‘n Taxes – Preboard - Game 1

I’m on the play and keep these:

    Gemstone Mine
    Lotus Petal
    Gemstone Mine
    Brainstorm
    Empty the Warrens
    Polluted Delta
    Gitaxian Probe

I start of with Delta, go. He draws, plays Plains into Vial, go. I draw Burning Wish for the turn and cast Probe(18). I see a hand of Aven Mindsensor, Mother of Runes, Wasteland, Rishadan Port, Plains and Eiganjo Castle. I draw Lotus Petal of the Probe and play Gemstone Mine to Brainstorm. I draw Infernal Tutor, LED and Brainstorm putting back Infernal Tutor and Gemstone Mine. Fetch(17) a Sea, Petal (3), Petal(4), LED(5), Crack Petals for RB, Burning Wish(6) and crack LED (RRR), tap Sea (RRRB) for ETW (7). 14 goblins enter the battlefield and it’s his turn. He ticks Vial(@1) and drops a Jitte and vials in a Mother of Runes. I draw Cabal Therapy for the turn and cast it, naming Mindsensor. He doesn’t reveal a SFM and I attack (6). He draws, does the math and scoops them up.

    Death ‘n Taxes – Preboard - Game 2

He mulligans to 6 and I decide to keep these on the draw:

    Rite of Flame
    Silence
    Bloonstained Mire
    Chrome Mox
    Gitaxian Probe
    Cabal Therapy
    Ponder

He starts of with Plains. I draw Brainstorm and choose to Gitaxian Probe to prevent a potential Thalia. I look at Thalia, Revoker, Stoneforge, Wasteland and Eiganjo Castle. Meh. I draw a Volcanic Island and play Chrome Mox (Ponder) and cast Brainstorm. I draw 2x Gemstone Mine and an Underground Sea - terrible. I put back the Volcanic Island and the Sea, play Mire and fetch(19) the Sea to cast a Cabal Therapy naming Thalia. He plays Eiganjo Castle and casts Revoker naming Chrome Mox, go. I draw a Gitaxian Probe and play Mine. My hand now contains RoF, Silence, Probe and Mine so I choose to leave the Probe up. Go. He plays Wasteland, wastes the Mine and attacks (15), Stoneforge Mystic hits the battlefield and searches up a Batterskull before passing the turn. At this rate I realize I should’ve cast the Silence in upkeep. I draw a Delta, cast the Probe (13) and look at Rishadan Port, Wasteland and Batterskull. I draw another Probe (11) and cast it to draw a Therapy. Play Delta and cast Therapy naming Batterskull. In his turn he attacks (8) and wastes my Mine before passing the turn. I draw Burning Wish, go. He attacks (5), Port, go. In my upkeep he ports my delta to which I crack it (14) to get a Volcanic Island. I draw a Gemstone Mine and pass the turn. In his upkeep I silence him and he attacks (2). I draw Burning Wish and scoop ‘em up.

    Death ‘n Taxes – Postboard - Game 1

Sideboard: -2 Silence, +1 Thoughtseize, +1 Chain of Vapor

I’m on the play and keep these seven while he mulls to 5:

    LED
    Rite of Flame
    City of Brass
    Ponder
    Dark Ritual
    Thoughtseize
    Lotus Petal

City of Brass(19) into Ponder shows LED, Wish and Dark Ritual. I draw the Wish and leave the LED on top in case of Surgical Extraction. He starts of with a Plains into Mother of Runes. I draw LED, tap City(18) to cast Dark Ritual (1)(BBB), Thoughtseize(16life)(2)(BB). I look at Thalia, Ethersworn Canonist, Rest in Peace and a Rishadan Port. That might be the best mull to 5 the deck has to offer. I take the Thalia in case of Jitte+first strike shenanigans. Lotus Petal (3), LED(4), LED(5), crack petal Rite of Flame (6)(RRBB), Burning Wish crack LEDS(BBRRRUUU). At that point I realize Ratchet Bomb might blow me out if I go for 16 goblins. I choose to DimRet(7) with RRUB floating and a land drop to be made.
I remove 10 and draw: LED, ETW, Dark Ritual, Petal, Mine, Mine, Chrome Mox. Crap, now I still have to go for goblins and his chance for Ratchet Bomb is 3,5 times higher. Mox(-) (8), Petal(9), LED(10), Dark Ritual(11), ETW(12). 24 tokens is enough to beat a possible triple Mother of Runes in one single blow. He draws and scoops.

    Death ‘n Taxes – Postboard - Game 2

Sideboard: -2 Silence, +1 Thoughtseize, +1 Chain of Vapor.

I’m on the draw and while he mulls to 6, I keep these seven:

    Chain of Vapor
    Gemstone Mine
    Burning Wish
    Lotus Petal
    Burning Wish
    Gitaxian Probe
    Gemstone Mine

That’s a really iffy hand but I guess it can win turn 3 through a hatebear if I get some rituals and a LED. In hindsight I guess this should be a mulligan.
He starts of with a Port into Vial. I draw a Bloodstained Mire, play it and pass the turn. He ticks Vial (@1) and plays Karakas into Thalia, go. I draw a Chrome Mox play Mine and pass. Vial@2, he attacks (18) and vials Canonist into play. End of turn I fetch and return The canonist back to his hand via Chain of Vapor. In upkeep he taps my Mine with Port and after I draw a Dark Ritual I scoop them up as I don’t have an out against 2 hatebears.

    Death ‘n Taxes – Postboard - Game 3

On the play I keep these:

    LED
    Gemstone Mine
    Volcanic Island
    Chrome Mox
    Underground Sea
    Dark Ritual
    Burning Wish

I start of with a Sea. He starts with a Plains. I draw Lotus Petal and play it (1). Gemstone Mine, Dark Ritual (2)(BBB), LED(3), Mox(-)(4), crack Petal (RBBB), Wish(5) and crack LED (RRRBB), ETW(6). I hope that 12 gobs is enough and doesn’t have a Mystic. In his turn he plays a second Plains followed by a Thalia. I draw a Ponder and cast it seeing Dark Ritual, Gemstone Mine and an ETW. I choose to shuffle as I’m really searching for a discard spell, cantrip or a Silence. I draw LED and attack with the tokens. He blocks one and goes to 9 life. He plays a Rishadan Port and casts Flickerwisp removing 1 goblin before passing the turn. I draw an Infernal Tutor and attack with the 10 remaining goblins. He blocks to and has 1 life left. He draws a horizon canopy, which draws another card. Doesn’t find the Ratched Bomb and scoops.

    Deathblade – Preboard - Game 1

I’m on the draw and keep this:

    Gemstone Mine
    Silence
    Ponder
    Dark Ritual
    Silence
    Chrome Mox
    Dark Ritual

He starts the game with a Delta(19) into Underground Sea and Deathrite Shaman. I draw a Gemstone Mine and Ponder seeing Lotus Petal, LED and Infernal Tutor, which is the absolute walnut. I stack the Tutor on top of Petal and draw LED. At this rate I can only lose against double discard or double FoW. His turn he plays another Delta(18) to search a Tundra and cast Stoneforge Mystic. He gets the Batterskull and attacks with his Shaman (19). I draw the Infernal Tutor and cast Mox(Silence)(1), Mine, Silence(2) of the Mox, resolves. Dark Ritual(3)(BBB), Dark Ritual(4)(BBBBB), LED(5), Infernal Tutor(6) and crack LED (BBBRRR), Ad Nauseam(7), which gets there.

    Deathblade – Preboard - Game 2

On the play this time and while he mulls to 6, I keep this really risky stuff:

    Chrome Mox
    Dark Ritual
    Gitaxian Probe
    Lotus Petal
    Burning Wish
    Chrome Mox
    Rite of Flame

I don’t know why I kept it. It was probably a mulligan, but I had such a feeling it would get there.
I Gitaxian Probe(18) and see his 6: Ponder, 2x Tundra, 2x Polluted Delta, Misty Rainforest. I draw a LED.. got there! Chrome Mox(Dark Ritual)(2), Lotus Petal(3), Mox(-)(4), crack Petal(R), Rite of Flame(5)(RR), LED(6), tap Mox(RRB), Burning Wish(7) and crack Led (RRRB), ETW(8). 16 Goblins and pass the turn. He draws and scoops.

Any tips, improvements and opinions are welcome!
Also, to all the Stormtroopers attending the Grand Prix; I wish you the best of luck. By the way, any TES-pilot who wants to alter (*ruin) a goblin for me is most welcome and appreciated!

    Thanks for reading,

    ~Tom

I can write down notes at a decent speed at this rate, but I don't want to ask my opponent to keep his eyes of my notes as I write down acronyms of my starting hand. I guess I won't be able to bring a detailed report of the GP, but if I find the time I think I will bring some sort of report.

Anyway, thanks man! And goodluck with the ladies!

Just encode your starting grip ... use dutch words to describe the card and use the acronym of the description. I do nothing else (just in german).

Atm, I'm very happy with a certain Lady :D

Well... I was supposed to storm at SCG:NJ this weekend, SCG decided that they've seen enough of the storm.

Re: [Deck] T.E.S. - The EPIC Storm

I played a trial today with tes.
I will make report later but there was a game 3 vs team america.

I start with gemstone into bs.
After the bs resolved i have this in hand:

    2 rof
    1 dr
    1 therapy
    1 led

    On top i put
    Enpty over infernal.

I drop the led and pass the turn.

He goes u sea into chaman.

    On my turn i make:
    City
    Tap gemstone for rof
    Tap city for dr
He smells the empty and fows.
I have another rof so i get 4 mana and make 10 tokens.

    Now!

    I have 2 options:
Crack led to discard therapy and sac a token for calling golgary.
Then i draw infernal and have nothing he has with the blocker 3 turns to find an out in a deck with bs and ponder.

Or yolo on charm and next turn therapy with infernal in hand. And if i draw. Rof, dr or led i can go off.

So what have here ppl done?

Burn led for call golgary or stand with the it plan?

If your plan is to EtW, keep the worthless LED in hand for your combo turn (12 Token against 1 Shaman = 2 swing kill). As he can cantrip + cast Charm with a T1 Shaman, I would not cast Therapy on Charm as the fact that he throw a FoW against the Ritual in fear of EtW clearly indicates that he has no Charm in hand. If you want to make that play with Therapy, name Brainstorm or Ponder; I would simply pass ... yolo

In other words: he had all. I still would not have wasted a Diamond for the flashback and still need 3 swings to win which give him time to find another charm and shit

So a summary of my grandprix Paris experience:

    Round1: lose 1-2 against mud
    Round2: win 2-0 against rugdelver
    Round3: win 2-0 against bugdelver
    Round4: lose 0-2 against uwrdelver
Round5: win 2-1 against uwr miracles with geists and standstills ("Geist with Flair")
Round6: win 2-0 against monoR sneakattack
Round7: win 2-1 against uwrdelver -> most epic match of the day (lose g1 against double fow, win g2 through meddling mage fow and canonist, win g3 through 2pierce, fow, delver turn 1, daze, pyroblast and meddling mage)
    Round8: win 2-0 against elves
    Round9: win 2-1 against AnT

Met Lejay, who signed my doomsdays, great guy. Didnt spot any other TES player except for one blond german guy.

I'm going to bed now, day2 starts really early.

Signed Doomsday's by Lejay, that's awesome! Congrats on day 2. Can we expect a write up of the matches? I definitely want to read more on round 7 especially.
