As far as changing your list configuration, you can do with one less land. I'd shave a fetch, assuming that you'll get all the duals at some point - wouldn't bother playing basics. 4 STP is probably too much - it's a huge liability a good chunk of the time, so if you're looking for cards to cut this is the first to go (aside from the Stifles, obviously). Bolt kills all the same stuff aside from Goyf and still goes to the face, so that's why you keep those and cut plows.
You also have waaaaay too many Wear/Tear in your board.
I'll try this tomorrow: -1 Tarn, -1 Swords, -3 Stifle, +3 Probe, +2 Spell Pierce
I am still pretty sure that Pierce is the worst card in that 60
wear//tear is a concession to my meta which has chalice of the void everywhere, but I'll look in to cutting one
doesn't stop turn 1 [insert scary thing here] on the draw
can be played around once they hit 3 mana
mediocre against deathrite shaman decks and awful against land-based decks, the combination of which are about 40-50% of my meta
Granted, those were my impressions of the card when I was playing UR Delver and UWR Stoneblade in the Treasure Cruise era. I only played with Pierce (and no Stifle) in UWR Delver the first 2 weeks I played the deck, and I didn't do very well. Of course that might have been due to other factors such as poor play or suboptimal sideboard.
I acknowledge your experience with the deck and I'll definitely try out different configurations. Thanks for your help thus far.
Stifle doesn't stop anything T1 on the draw either :P
Also, if they're waiting to hit 3 mana to play around your Spell Pierce, that's tempo right there. Often it's correct to cast a Spell Pierce into two open mana to force them to use up all their mana.
As for your meta, I can't help you there - land decks are an atrocious matchup for this deck, play something else if you want to win :)
I don't think lands is an "atrocious" matchup for this deck. It's certainly not good but not more than 60-40. True name, wasteland, batterskull, and swords all give us main deck power, and then meddling mage and rest in peace are all stars.
What advantages does this deck have (if any) to Deathblade? I'm trying to find my way in Legacy and I'm really stuck trying to pick a deck. Thanks!
It's sort of a weird beast. We're not the best tempo deck, and we're certainly not the best control deck - what we do have is a way to put on early pressure that can be difficult to deal with given our protection, and once it's gone, they have to deal with the problem of Batterskull and/or TNN. And we DO NOT have Stifle, the card is garbage.
It's not been an effective strategy for any deck so far other than RUG Delver.
From my phone. I do my best, dammit!
So, is everyone still playing Lavamancer? Seems like the weakest card in the board and I'm trying to fit in Council's Judgment and V. Clique.
yeah
it's mostly for Elves but it's also useful against Infect
I get that it's good against Elves but isn't our deck already just insane against it anyways? We have 8 removal spells in addition to Jitte, Wasteland for their Cradles, and counters for their NO and Glimpses. It seems like overkill, where as Clique and Judgment seem like great 1-of utility cards.
I'm asking because I just picked up a Jap foil Clique and am not sure whether or not I should get rid of my 2 Jap foil Lavamancers :P
I don't think it's better than a 55/45 against Elves. I lost to it last week. Sometimes they just play a bunch of dudes and we can't really deal w/ that without any wrath effects.
I might be in the minority or proven wrong through continued playing, but I still like Lavamancer. He is such a brutal early turn drop vs many aggro decks, and the extra reach is good in others. My current plan I have two Dig Through Time in the main, and a package of two Lavamancers and another package of two Rest in Peace in the board. I don't ever mix them, and play whichever two card package I feel works best for each matchup after boarding.
I do like having a Clique in the deck too. My deliberation is whether to have 2 TNN and 1 Clique in the main, or 3 TNN main and 1 Clique in the board to replace a TNN with in more control/combo matchups.
