"You either die a Onesto-Player, or live long enough to see yourself become a Dredger"
Many prices are inflated anyway, but the current bubble building becomes quite ridiculous.
Is it just my imagination or... if you had the foresight to see this Modern frenzy coming (say, a year ago), you could have bought a ton of staples and just cashed out right now and made a huge profit?
I mean, it's not like it wasn't obvious that cards like Blood Moon, Cavern of Souls, Snapcaster Mage, and the like would all see huge demand down the line.
So I'm assuming you had the foresight and capital to invest in X+ playsets of each of those?
Can you tell me what cards I should buy right now that will sky rocket in value in the next year+, please?
The thing is, that many obvious cards spiked already, there aren't that many left which could/will spike again. I think, that the following cards could and probably will spike: Cryptic, Bob and Tar Pit/Colonnade. But those cards won't spike that much compared with Blood Moon and co. Also it is not given that those will spike.
Greetings,
Kathal
The big thing is whether or not you want to gamble on wizards reprinting things in some wonky set. Like they probably aren't putting snapcasters in a core set anytime soon, but who's to say snaps aren't in like the next commander set or something? It's not that easy. I mean if blood moon had simply been in MM2 there's no way they'd be as high as they are
Plus people already thought blood moon had made its spike since it jumped from like 10 to 30 or something over a single weekend before this most recent spike. A card that has been printed as many times as blood moon has generally doesn't see spikes like that
In a way, it is that easy for speculators to run rampant.
Wizards hasn't plainly stated it anywhere, but they've made it readily apparent that they are a bit anxious to put big-money cards into a lot of their supplemental products, likely because it puts them out of the hands of the intended demographic, casual players. If Duel Decks: X vs Y had a couple $40+ cards in each deck, how long do you think it would be before speculators buy them out to rip them open for playsets/resale? How long util they are unavailable or can only be purchased at far above MSRP?
They've pretty much handcuffed themselves when it comes to Duel Decks and Commander* pre-cons, leaving only Standard boosters and "Premium" supplemental products as viable ground for money reprints. Obviously a great deal of cards in need of reprint cannot exist in Standard due to power or world-building considerations, leaving things like Modern Masters, From the Vault, and Event Decks as the only avenue. And those sets simply aren't frequent enough to really put a dent in the huge, decades-long backlog Wizards is accumulating.
I get that Wizards wants a good stable of expensive cards, both for the purposes of Reprint Equity as well as to pay the Judge Corps through promos. Things like Shocks and Cashseize can really help to sell turkeys of sets/blocks like NuRavnica and Theros. But things are getting out of hand. Even if Wizards went full bore on reprinting EVERYTHING, they simply wouldn't be able to cover all the $10+ cards that have cropped up over the years. Things like Gauntlet of Power, Crucible of Worlds, Akroma's Memorial, Oblivion Stone, Blood Moon, Heritage Druid, Fauna Shaman, and a slew of other multi-format staples.
Speculators know this, and that's why they can feel free to inflate the bubble through buyouts, knowing the chance of getting burned is extremely slim. Hell, even when Wizards does reprint money cards, they often half-ass things; look at Goyf at Mythic when it could have easily been at Rare. This further encourages speculation, because risk is extremely low.
What's necessary is to see some real risk in the Magic secondary market. Some $90+ card (say Liliana of the Veil or Snapcaster Mage) needs to be completely tanked, so as to burn speculators, and make it a losing proposition to throw that much money into re-printable cardboard. Put some fear into the speculator's hearts. It doesn't need to be every card, but one or two precipitous drops would really put a brake on the rampant inflation of price bubbles. Wizards does have one ace up their sleeve in this endeavor: promotional cards. Make widely-distributed, big event promos good cards. I was so excited to learn that Lili was going to be a PTQ promo until I found out the changes to the PTQ system (you need to win/top-8 a preliminary to qualify). That's not exactly the injection of veiled necromancers that I was hoping for.
*Well, Commander is a bit of a wild card here because of their insistence on printing possible Legacy/Vintage playables in them. I don't think anything would be lost in terms of Legacy if Commander/Planechase/Conspiracy cards weren't legal, though Vintage would lose some funsies.
I have 12+ playsets of regular Snapcasters and 5 playsets of foil Snapcasters sitting in binders.. All acquired more than 2 years ago. I mean, everyone knew he was going to be a staple in every format going forward. How could you not see that?
Right now, I have been buying up every single Khans fetchland I can find, and every single Theros Thoughtseize, and every single Dig Through Time. 2+ years from now these things will either maintain or increase in value. Also, Collected Company is a very good card to buy if you see them around. Barring a future ban, there is no way CC loses value going forward.
Only has applications in Legacy and I think the potential of that card is already maxed out.
When I buy excess cards, like when I bought my stacks of Cavern of Souls and Snapcasters ~1-2 years ago... I look for generically good stuff that has future applications in Legacy and Modern that can only improve with future printings.
Yep, that can't be good for the community. And wow, Snapcaster Mages and fetchlands. Yeah, that's an hard one. Do you also have 15+ playsets of Blood Moons stuck up your asshole? Or is that spot taken up by foil Oblivion Stones?
After the latest Modern GP was won by Elves, Heritage Druid is now 25$.
Foil Trinispheres are also bought out, for some reason.
