I played Carsten Cotter's "Demon Rum" deck yesterday. The deck felt very powerful (despite the terrible name). I had a super interesting line that I'm going to leave to you guys as a puzzle.
List here (under Demon Rum)
Situation:
I'm at 4, on my main phase. My opponent is on RUG Delver, has lethal on board, Eidolon of the Great Revel and one unknown in hand.
My cantrip bricked, so my hand is Show and Tell, Omniscience, 2x Burning Wish, and a land (already played a land for turn), with 5 lands of any relevant color untapped.
Find the line that can win.
Languages and dates for every set. For all you true pimps.
Burning Wish into Massacre, play it paying 4 (assuming you had a Crystal Vein in play for a total of 6 mana), pass the turn, they do whatever, untap, S&T, combo off and win unless they have fow and draw into blue card and you don't draw into Therapy.
From my phone. I do my best, dammit!
Yeah, need more info. I mean it basically is of he swings with eidolon. Puts you to 2 and then you have 0 outs. If there is another creature on the board I'd prefer to know so I know what I need to beat.
From my phone. I do my best, dammit!
Cast Show and Tell. You can pay for Spell Pierce on any spell. Opponent puts in Eidolon, you put in Omniscience. Cast Burning Wish No. 1 (you go to 2 life) and grab Petals of Insight, which gets around the Eidolon trigger. Continually cycle Petals of Insight until you find a pile of three cards with Emrakul. When you find a pile that wins, choose to draw it. You then take an extra turn with Emrakul. Also, if you're Greg, after you wipe out the Eidolon with the annihilator trigger, if the opponent isn't dead, you'll probably cast another Burning Wish just so you can kill with Grapeshot.
Well, that's absurd. But, OK, so the line changes to Show and Tell, putting in Omniscience, opponent puts in Eidolon. All your spells are now free to cast. Burning Wish No. 1 (down to 2 life) for Massacre. Play Massacre, killing Eidolon. Burning Wish No. 2 grabs Petals of Insight. Loop Petals of Insight to build up storm until you find another Burning Wish, at which point you stop and draw three. Play Wish No. 3 to get Grapeshot and KO opponent.
See? I knew there had to be a Storm line.
8 players, 3 rounds, split for first place after going 2-0. This was my 75:
19 LANDS
4 Misty Rainforest
5 Island
4 Flooded Strand
2 Volcanic Island
1 City of Traitors
1 Ancient Tomb
2 Boseiju, Who Shelters All
2 CREATURES
2 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
36 INSTANTS and SORC.
4 Show and Tell
4 Dig Through Time
4 Force of Will
3 Spell Pierce
1 Flusterstorm
4 Preordain
4 Ponder
2 Gitaxian Probe
4 Brainstorm
4 Cunning Wish
1 Split Decision
4 ENCHANTMENTS
4 Omniscience
SIDEBOARD
1 Electrickery
1 Wipe Away
1 Sudden Shock
1 Through the Breach
1 Eladamri's Call
1 Firemind's Foresight
1 Flusterstorm
1 Swan Song
2 Pyroblast
2 Pyroclasm
1 Release the Ants
2 Young Pyromancer
MATCH 1: VS Miracles
Game 1: I opened with a good hand that had Boseiju and the combo, and when I combo'd out, I opened with a DTT that was Forced. I responded with Brainstorm into DTT and Split Decision, and he scooped from there.
Boarding: -2 Gitaxian Probe, +2 Pyroblast
Game 2: He managed to assemble Countertop in two turns, and kept me from doing anything significant before the Mentor came into play.
Game 3: I went with a second turn Show and Tell with Force backup and Emrakul in hand.
MATCH 2: VS Miracles
Game 1: Boseiju saved me again. I had uncounterable DTT's, Show and Tells, and went with Cunning Wish into Eladamri's Call into Split Decision into double Emrakul.
Boarding: -2 Gitaxian Probe, -1 DTT, +2 Pyroblast, +1 Flusterstorm
Game 2: He tried to go for turn 2 Counterbalance. I had Show and Tell, Emrakul, 2 FOW, 2 Blue Cards, and Ancient Tomb. My topdeck was an Island. Show and Tell, 2nd turn Emrakul, he scooped.
I didn't bother playing the third match, but I had some really lucky breaks in these two matchups.
omnitell win open series
And i still don t understand Why bolt over sudden shock
Thx Captain obvious!!
Bolt : cheaper , easily countered , can t pass Mom+bear
Shock: more expensive , harder to counter and kill mom+bear
What is so hard to understand?
You can play bolt but don t tell me it s better than shock and please use good arguments!
Does he have Eidolon in hand or in play? It's kinda confusing. If he's got the Eidolon in hand, it's super easy: Burning Wish first for Massacre, SnT --> Omni, cast Massacre 4free to kill the Eidolon, then proceed to win with the 2nd Burning Wish. This way you also dodge Lightning Bolt. Against Daze, you would have to SnT first, then get 2 damage from the Wish for Massacre and then proceed to win. Against Spell Pierce you're dead in any case.
If the Eidolon is in play, you're pretty dead.

Things I noticed about the winning deck:
- No Sudden Shock - as others mentioned this seems suspect
- No Boseiju
- No Through the Breach
- Impulse > Split Decision, Intuition in the board
- No Trickbind, which I have seen in other boards and I currently play in the board
Results don't lie, obviously he did quite well.
I have found Boseiju to be very helpful in the limited number of games I've played, as well as Sudden Shock. I have been on the Split Decision > Impulse/Intuition plan, which I still feel is better, but, again, what do I know. What do you all think?
On that same note I went 2-4 drop on Saturday. Learned a lot about the deck and how it plays. Learned I still have a TON more to learn about it, too. Definitely adding Surgical or Grafdiggers back into the board as not being to interact with Dredge is abysmal.
I agree on all your points, I'd be very interested if the pilot knew of these alternatives. Sudden Shock > Bolt and Split Decision > Impulse especially as they both seem far superior to me.
I guess the lack of Trickbind and Boseiju could boil down to not expecting much Miracles? Specifically the legends build.
During my testing and my last (first with Omnitell) tournament I found Split Decision pretty mediocre at best. I play U/B and I always wished it was the 4th Thoughtseize instead. Am I missing something? Why do you want Trickbind against Miracles? Boseiju on the other hand did a decent job against Grixis Delver (didn't board the second because of waste but played one main and had it naturally) and Bomberman.
Massacre from the board shined in my two death'n'taxes matchups logically. Wipe away on a SpiritOTLab with Mother Protection and a well timed Hurkyls Recall on a board with two upticked Vials, Canonist and Skull or something did their work.
Still needing help here. Why bother with Trickbind if you can win on the spot with a nasty trigger on the stack?
Thx for your help.
Trickbind works great in a ton of matchups. Works on Counterbalance in the Miracles matchup, Griselbrand, an opposing Emrakul trigger etc etc etc. There are a lot of neat things it can do on the stack.
Also Split Decision is for the 2 drop spot with Fireminds. If you don't care about missing that value, then do as you wish, but you should have 1 2 drop in the deck (says the noob).
