I played a Pendelhaven/Chrome Mox/Instigator list for much of the summer. When everything came together the deck could present a very strong rush. And this speed, I believe, was necessary for the Dig Through Time meta. When things didn't work, you were still playing a similar Goblins game. Overwhelm the board or stay alive until you could clock someone out of nowhere.
Thanks! You're probably right about the necessary pace of the deck under DTT era. I'm not sure Deathrite was any less/more common than now, but there certainly were more Young Pyros running around to clog up your normal Lackey game. That said, we're in a different meta again. I'm curious what'll happen to the Instigator builds now.

Chalice is less of a surprise lately. My opponents expect it now and are prepared to fight it. If I am leaning on Chalice too hard, I am setting myself up to be blown out.

In the past months, I've dropped to a single Chalice of the Void in the board. It usually comes in against Storm and Delver variants. Against Storm, I like that I can drop a Lackey and a Chalice on 0 from the first turn. As you mention, it is necessary to provide disruption and a threat.
Chalice on 0 really is the most compelling use. As far as Delver variants, aren't we pretty far ahead without boarding? I haven't played all the flavors of Delver, but none of them feel like it's worth having dedicated board slots. And if you buy that, it means Storm is the best use of Chalice, but perhaps Thalia is better? Or maybe diversifying would be best?

I have a question for you. What do you like about Red Elemental Blast and when do you bring it in?
I settled on a board I'm really happy with, and it answers some of these questions.

    2 Containment Priest
    1 Pithing Needle
    3 Pyrokinesis
    2 Red Elemental Blast
    3 Relic of Progenitus
    3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
    1 Wear // Tear

Containment Priest gives me a lot of game vs Sneak and Show and Reanimator. I'm not concerned about the nombo of Vial and Lackey in these matchups. I also swapped a Wear // Tear in my former list for a Pithing Needle. Wear // Tear was traditionally used to hit Jitte, but Pithing Needle does just as good of a job while also allowing me to name Sneak Attack as well as a bunch of other random threats. I still don't want to go below 3 Relic or 3 Pyrokinesis. They're both amazing in the deck. Thalia is still my Storm solution. I dislike that it's so narrow, but I don't know of a more versatile answer that is also as potent against Storm. Except, finally, for Red Blast. I bring Red Blast in against almost every unfair matchup as well as some fair. It's great against Sneak and Show and also does fine against Reanimator, Storm, and even Miracles for attacking cantrips. Vs RUG Delver, it's probably right to swap a Tarfire or two out for Red Blasts too.

Yeah, in my testings Grenzo is a pretty legit member of the "singleton club" together with kiki, crafter and wort. It's mechanics are comparable with Wort in my opinion, since it gives a steady flow of card advantage. While Wort is more heavily costed and less flexible, she gives us certainty over the card we get. Grenzo is more flexible, and you can use his ability the turn you play him for 4 mana (the same cost as Wort), but is a lot more random. It's one of those cards that you really need to test to account for his power level.

Uhh, I guess that's the price we have to pay for playing less Piledrivers. But anyways, I would never run more than 2 Piledrivers right now.

Yeah, Piledriver is a house vs Merfolks.

My list is also built (generally speaking) to answer specific threats and make advantageous trades that eventually add up to victory. That works pretty good when you kill their Delver and can feel safe for a few turns, not so much when you kill one threat and they still have eight power on board.

Anyone else bringing Goblins to Eternal Extravaganza 3 this coming weekend?

    Re: [Deck] Goblins

    Hi there fellow goblin fanatics.

I've been slowly building up my collection over the last month or so in an attempt to build a goblin deck. I prefer the traditional style to the Winstigator lists and whilst I'm very interested in the list that Sandro is using at the moment I probably have to stay mono red for a while to reduce the number of cards I still have to get.

Can I ask you folks to spare a few minutes looking over what I've got so far and pointing out either where you think changes are necessary or any potential cards for my sideboard. I've still played very few Legacy games so sideboard construction just hasn't been a consideration yet.

I'm well aware that I need 2 more Cavern of Souls and 4 Wasteland as probably the top priorities.

    Main Deck

    20 Mountain
    2 Cavern of Souls
    4 Goblin Lackey
    4 Goblin Matron
    4 Goblin Piledriver
    4 Goblin Ringleader
    4 Goblin Warchief
    3 Gempalm Incinerator
    2 Mogg War Marshal
    1 Goblin Chieftain
    1 Goblin Sharpshooter
    1 Krenko, Mob Boss
    1 Siege-gang Commander
    1 Skirk Prospector
    1 Stingscourger
    1 Tuktuk Scrapper
    4 Aether Vial
    2 Tarfire

    Sideboard

    2 Chalice of the Void
    1 Pithing Needle
    3 Relic of Progenitus
    3 Pyrokinesis
    2 Ashen Rider

I do have some fetches and some shocks I could use if a splash is worth it but I'm not sure it is.

edit: Known decks in my meta are DnT, Merfolk, Affinity, Temur Delver, Omnitell, Esper Stoneblade, Elves

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: [Deck] Goblins

Went 3-1 last night. Same list I've been on. MonoR, no Ports, Kiki+Crafter+2 Prospectors.

    R1 - Grixis Delver
G1. He drew only creatures this game and Sharpshooter cleaned house.
G2 It was a back and forth but I just didn't have enough damage on board to kill him on the swing-back.
G3 I resolved 2 Vials then a Chalice @ 1. Sharpshooter + Crafter cleared his board and I took control of the game.
    1-0

    R2 - NicFit
G1 - He destroys my hand with CT then brings the beats
G2 - I build a huge board but cannot profitably attack through his Lifelink fatties. I wish I had video of this one because I'd like to watch it and see where I went wrong. I'm pretty sure I was dreaming of the combo kill rather than just playing solid Magic. When he cleared the board with Deed I was not getting back into the game.
    1-1

    R3 - TES
    G1 - L
G2 - Opponent mulls to 5 and Chalice @ 0 gets me there.
G3 - My opponent is stuck on Volcanic Island as his ownly land. he plays T1 LED and passes. I play T1 lackey. He durdles. I play T2 Chalice @ 1, T3 Trinisphere, T4 Waste. So, yeah, obviously I had won that game, but my opponent probably would have won with any land from his deck other than Volcanic. Being on the draw against Storm sucks sooo bad, especially for my monoR build because I just don't have interactive options T1.
    2-1

    R4 - 12Post
G1 Maindeck Goblin Settler kills a Chasm. W.
G2 T3 i attack with Piledriver, Piledriver, Warchief. T4 my opponent casts Show and Tell. He drops Primevial Titan, I drop Blood Moon. I cast another Warchief on my turn and win.
    3-1

The loss to NicFit was ridiculous and I KNOW I played poorly because I never felt like I had a gameplan or knew what the fuck I was doing. Normally I have a pretty good handle on those games.

    @jon: nice run.
Game 3 against tes, why didn't you dropped cotv@0 t1, instead of saving it for t2? Or you drew it t2?
    Cheers

His opponent dropped the LED in his hand on t1, so CotV at 0 is unlikely to disrupt him much except post Ad Nauseam/Past in Flames, but in both cases it's a low EV play that only has a minor chance of impacting the game. TES generally has a Chain of Vapor available too so post-combo with a LED in play, they'll probably have the mana and the tools to remove the CotV if it's inhibiting their victory. Generally against TES opponents who expect/have seen CotV, Chalice at 0 is only optimal turn 1 on the play; otherwise you'll want to wait to CotV at 1 (unless you have multiples in hand). If they drop no acceleration you might want to try it particularly if you only need one-two turns to race 'em but as you're essentially only calling their bluff/punishing them for wanting an extra storm or two from the accelerants, so the most reasonable expectation is that it only impact their draws on the subsequent turns.

I cringe at this MU because it's hard to gauge which flavor they are running as well as what toolbox options they have. Last 3 times I played this matchup I had Humility dropped on me. You wanna know what sucks? Getting a humility dropped on you. At this point i flat out hate playing against nic fit.

Would you guys be up for us to have a facebook group the way TES or Ad Nauseam players do?

I'd join but out of interest what does that give us that this board doesn't?

I can sneak a look here whilst at work (like now) but I couldn't get away with Facebook up on my screen!

    Yeah that'd be sick.

Forums makes things anonymous to some degree - fb makes it more personal. Sounds cool.
