Just another success story with my UG ebola deck.
Took 1st place after 6 rounds.
R1 was MUD. G1 he keeps a riski hand as he said, if i had the force, but i didnt and he went turn one lodestone, turn two lodestone.. taxing and clocking. yadr.. I have som inkmoths and elves i try to race with, but died to exact damage even after putting 3 -1/-1 counters on the big robots. G2 we have a very tight game with me playing around chalice and trinisphere and lodestone. eventually i get there. G3 i have clock on the board and he goes all in with forgemaster which i let trigger and he finds Blightsteel to kill me with infect (GOD, i hate infect..). I've been sandbagging the STP, nuked the robot and went on with lethal next turn through Bimmense and berserk.
1-0
R2 RUG. I slowly beat him to death as he misplays a bolt into an invigorate on attack. Game 2 he super waste me, but only ever saw 1 nimble which had to block my elf. I get there in the end.
2-0
R3 miracles. Normally i love this matchup, but this guy draws so well all the time and i've never represented a threat against him the times we played... Well has triple plowshares and snap, and i only have some dudes and not enough protection. G2 He wear+tears my null rod and sylvan library (auch!) and i never get back into the game.
2-1
R4 Merfolk. I have a fast agent and an inkmoth. He is relatively high on poison after an agent attack with double exalted trigger. I have bimmense in hand as he draws jitte and plays it. He attacks, gains counters, shoots the agent (as i had hoped) and says go. Before exalted triggers he tries to shoot my inkmoth with the last jitte counter, but bimmense with force back up halts his plan. My dude grows to 8/8 and puts him on 11 PSN. G2 He mulligans to four and the game is over. I just played my cards and threatened him quickly.
R5 Omni. I have a turn 1 elf and attacks for one. He goes cantripping. I attack him to 1 PSN in second turn. Next turn i use two invigorates for lethal, he flusterstorms, i pay for all of them with force back up. In retrospect this was a mistake, i should have used 1 invigorate both attack phases, so the storm count wasnt so high. On the other hand if i had kept and he cliqued me the hand was less prone to run out of juice as i could draw either beserk or invigorate for the kill then, rather than having no pumps after clique. G2 he plays xantid swarm which is ever so annoying. I have Elf again and starts to threaten him with exalted trigger. At some point he has to block with it to not die. I waste his tropical, and stifle his fetch next turn to keep him off show and tell. Next turn he tries with a new land from the top, but i kept daze in hand. I berserk my elf and win.
R6 Painter. the worst matchup in the world. He fights me on all fronts; moon effects, the combo, freaking 4x sudden shock :O :O, and much more. G1 i only ever play force, force, pierce, daze. Never saw a second land, and succumbed to the second blood moon after piercing the first. He beats me with small dudes... G2 I keep a hand with elf, berserk, invigorate, trop, krosan, and stuff i couldn't use. Knowing he does not run bolts and only few interaction 1-drops (he could ramp tho...) i decided to keep. I faked some hesitation when playing the elf, instead of quickly slamming it and make him predict i had the combo kill. It worked it seems, cause he did not play his welder to block, and i turn 2 kill him. yay. G3 we both mulligan to 5 and opponent offers me a gentlemen draw (which is actually legal in tournys.. didnt know that): we draw the third game, and restarts a 4th with new opening 7. He laughs abit too much for my liking as turn 1 moon wins the game for him. However he goes top, go. I have an elf i think which he cannot answer, and dies to combo turn 3 or 4. pwew.
Great games, great deck.
Was considering running sylvan main, but didnt know what to move to the board.
MVP was bimmense, stifle and STP.
Thanks!
I'm back again.
So. My current sideboard is composed by:
2 Pithing Needle
1 Absolute Law
2 Rest in Peace
1 Flusterstorm
1 Force of Will
2 Krosan Grip
3 Swords to Plowshares
1 Teferi's Response
1 Vines of Vastwo
1 karakas
But I realy like to use 1 spellskite instead of absolute law.
And with karakas I feel that is needed one more crop rotation...
Thoughts ?
My meta is very mixed. But is right that I'll fight lots of blood moons and some burns.
Thoughts ????
I'd cut the Karakas, as its uses are mostly covered by Swords and RiP. Yes, you should be running the second Crop Rotation if you're playing a Lands package, but I feel as though the Lands package is ultimately weaker than the white splash.
My sideboard is identical to yours with the exception of +1 Nature's Claim, +1 Divert, -1 Karakas, -1 Absolute Law. Divert is a meta call for me, but I'd recommend another Naturalize effect if you see a lot of Blood Moon in your meta.
Spellskite is really swell in the mirror, but I don't think you'll find much use for it in other matchups. It's too fragile for its small upside, and your opponents are typically bringing in their artifact hate for Inkmoths in the postboard games already.
Jesture,
I'm really thinking about use 1 nature's claim instead the Karakas couse the high number of Moons that I'll fight.
Absolute Law shine against Jund and Lands(punishing fire and bolt) and against Burn decks. But, in my point of view, in these matchups the spellskite do the same and is good in the mirror too but die for artifact hates.
So. I'll use the Nature's claim in place of karakas.
And how about Absolute Law x Spellskite ????
I think you're misinterpreting the roles of Spellskite and Absolute Law in the deck. Absolute Law is a more durable and more powerful protection tool, but only applies to red sources. Spellskite is best against decks that target their own creatures with spells (basically just Infect) and decks that only use damage based removal (basically just Burn.)
Here's a brief list of problems with Spellskite:
-Dies to damage based removal (a block with Spellskite and a bolt will usually be enough to kill it)
-Pumps enemy goyfs (much more relevant post Dig ban)
-Dies to artifact hate (smash to smithereens, ancient grudge) and is hit by needle, revoker, null rod
-Requires life to activate, or to be in a situation where you have nothing better to do with mana which is also bad.
Between the two, I'm strongly in favor of Absolute Law over Spellskite. That said... I think your 15th sideboard slot can be used for Savannah with a move back to a main deck Forest to fight Blood Moon. A lot of people here have started playing Savannah main deck to save sideboard slots, which is absolutely fine, but it's unnecessarily greedy if you're predicting a lot of Blood Moon.
Absolute Law is better than Spellskite in almost every matchup besides the mirror. I tried Spellskite a bunch and he just isn't as good as in Modern. Also, consider using Seal of Primordium instead of Nature's Claim if you're really worried about Blood Moon. You can cast it ahead of time and make them come up with a solution first instead of trying to hold up spare mana for Claim. Seal is also easier to resolve through a Counterbalance. Karakas is nice, but ultimately unnecessary. The only matchup where it really shines is Reanimator, and you have 2x RiP, 2x Flusterstorm, and Plenty of other FoW/Soft counters.
i also agree with what's discussed here bout spellskite.. instead of using it, id rather put in another infector... might be necropede, ichor or viridian. ive tried using spellskite before and really hasnt been a major factor.. anyways, if you are expecting alot of moon decks, instead of nclaim, i would use naturalize or as syvelunite mentioned... seal is another good choice.. since they usually start with cotv 1, nclaim will do nothing against them.

Definitely agree about Absolute Law over Spellskite, but I wanted to see if anyone else was maindecking Savannah and a basic Forest and only playing 3 Trops. I moved to that after the Dig ban (since it was my only UU spell) and the only (minor) issue I've run into is deciding whether to hold back the Savannah land drop mid-late game 1 to hide the fact that I'm playing the white splash pre-board. I think overall, I like having the extra SB slot though and haven't run into any issues with being shorted on blue.
My board's looking like this right now:
2 x StP
2 x RiP
Absolute Law
Submerge
FoW (running 3 main)
Vines (running 3 main)
Submerge
Sylvan Library
Piracy Charm
Teferi's Response
2 x Krosan Grip
Pithing Needle
Thinking of adding another Needle and removing Teferi's. It's a blowout when it resolves, but Needle seems useful in more situations.
As the guy who basically convinced people to start using Teferi's Response, I'll be first to admit it can be gimmicky, but holy cow is it awesome sometimes. I would not fault anyone for cutting it. It's a pet card and I don't expect others to follow suit
That said, I think Piracy Charm is pretty bad and would drop that first.
As for the debate of the Savannah vs maindeck forest, Im actually running both now - with 8 fetches and 4 tropical. Seems to work out well, though, I'm also on the 20 land plan as well. I've played 19 lands a TON, probably more games than I have with 20 but I like the 20 land count for consistency and wasteland has been everywhere since DTT banning. As a result, Im playing
1 Forest
1 Savannah
1 Wasteland
1 Pendlehaven
4 Inkmoth
4 Tropical
8 Fetches
Works great.
As for SB options, Absolute Law is a freaking beating... admittedly, wasn't expecting that but I stole it from Zach's SB and thought it was worth a try :) It's been great, been liking it a lot.
I'm still stuck on the Spellskite. I don't know WHY I won't cut it - as you're all right, it's subpar and half the times that I've drawn it I don't even cast it because I have better things to do with my mana... but for some odd reason I keep it as my 15th SB slot. Likely due to stubbornness, always liked Spellskite but it's something I really should consider cutting going forward. I also run a Karakas because it's still good against Sneak&Show, which seems to be everywhere here in my area after OmniTell crashed and burned. IE, they all went the sneak attack route instead of going back to the old Omni decks or to another combo deck (like Storm), so Karakas is worth the slot in my meta, though likely not worth it in most.
Now my decks is finally packed for the sunday 5k legacy championship.
I'm running the following 75
4x elf
4x agent
4x hierarch
4x invigorate
3x vines
2x berserk
1x become immense
4x daze
3x fow
1x pierce
1x flusterstorm
1x stifle
4x brainstorm
3x probe
1x ponder
1x crop rotation
4x inkmoth nexus
8x green fetchland
4x tropical
1x forest
1x wasteland
1x pendelhaven
Sideboard
1x savannah
1x absolute law
2x stp
2x rip
2x krosan grip
1x fow
1x flusterstorm
2x needle
1x divert
1x vines
1x grafidiggers cage
Looks solid. Best of luck with the tournament, let us know how it goes.
How do most people here feel about Grafdigger's Cage in addition to the two copies of Rest in Peace? The cards overlap enough in utility that I've never felt the need to play the Cage. Any thoughts/opinions/experiences?
Since Elves is a - very - good match up (I play alternatively both decks), I would not put Cage in the sideboard for this march up.
The reason why I would put it in the 15 is more likely to be Dredge. It s a strong turn 1 play. RIP can be too slow. The same goes for Reanimator.
I don't agree that Elves is a very good match up.
They are so fast than us. We don't close the game in Turn 2 ever and the Elves can kill us trough Natural Order on him third turn.
The match against Elves could be 60%-40% or something like this. But it's not a very good match up.
That's my opinion ! :D
I'm in agreement on the Elves matchup being a favorable one. In that regard, the Cage is really only for Dredge and Reanimator, which are already fair matchups and made significantly better with the inclusion of white splash. Do we think these are unfavorable or popular enough to warrant the inclusion of an additional card to fight them?
A 60/40 matchup is definitely a very good one..
Elves can do nothing on G1 except trying to go faster than you (or if he has a Ruric Thar MD, which is my case), and you have countermagic for its No or Glimpse.
You can also daze its key creatures while you have the window to.
elves is a positive matchup, i havent checked my records still vs this archetype, but i havent lost any game vs green machine, probably 6+ matches...
dont afraid to trade in your glisteners, ive had matches wherein my opp thought i'll be short still of pumps and didnt block. itll punish them!
they will have no answer to our pumps/blighted and inkmoth game1
graf will be of a little help (especially if it's a 1-off in our sb) vs them... just load up on permission.. NO or glimpse are the things to watch.
any time we assemble or kill con, via lotsa cantrips.. the only thing they could do is Adecay our blighted. inkmoth is so good here.
i agree with the guys here, graf is more so for the unfair matchup as it is faster than rip. (dredge, reanimators, past in flames)

How do you board against Shardless BUG? The matchup is pretty good, but I'm still not sure if my configuration is right.
The list:
4 Noble Hierarch
4 Glistener Elf
4 Blighted Agent
4 Invigorate
3 Vines of Vastwood
2 Berserk
1 Become Immense
4 Brainstorm
2 Ponder
1 Crop Rotation
3 Gitaxian Probe
3 Force of Will
4 Daze
2 Spell Pierce
4 Inkmoth Nexus
4 Windswept Heath
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Tropical Island
1 Savannah
1 Pendelhaven
1 Wasteland
Sideboard:
1 Force of Will
2 Flusterstorm
2 Krosan Grip
1 Seal of Primordium
2 Pithing Needle
1 Sylvan Library
3 Swords to Plowshares
2 Rest in Peace
1 Absolute Law
The two Flusterstorms come in against their discard, the Sylvan Library is a no-brainer as well. I also like Pithing Needle against Liliana. But do you actually like the white cards against them? RIP is obviously good against them, but is it necessary? Same goes for StP. Right now I tend to board in Seal of Primordium and one or two Krosan Grips to have an out against a random Night of Soul’s Betrayal. They also blow up Baleful Strix.
I usually board out FoW and Probe and maybe a couple of Dazes.
What do you think? Bring in the white cards or not?
