i just have two more GPs upcoming (limited/modern) and an scg invi (half modern/std), so i won't have time to test/think about legacy for a while
mulligan aggressively, especially in g1
unfortunately the mirror is so insanely stupid, cause what tends to happen is either someone gets loam advantage (and bogs the other person out) or exploration + loam advantage which results in one person being stuck on 1-2 mana the entire game
Couple more videos.
Building a Fortress #48
Building a Fortress #49
Enjoy.
Jarvis, have you ever run ghost quarter in any of your builds? It seems like it would still be really good against decks like miracles, etc...is there a reason why it's no longer in?
Congrats Jarvisyu! I especially enjoyed your MU against (I think it was) Miracles![]()
Hey guys. I've never posted here before (only aware of MTGS), but I recently followed a thread from reddit and found this Lands GP discussion.
Just wanted to chime in since I'm still overwhelmingly stoked on my GP experience. This was my very first sanctioned legacy event and I placed 37th (11-2-2) on a stock RG list. Brian DeMars is the guy that knocked me out actually in the 13th round, so needless to say I was glued to the top 8 stream when I got home rooting for Jarvis.
Maybe it was a result of my performance, but I am incredibly hyped on legacy right now and can't wait to run this deck through another event soon. Lands player for life, meta willing.
Well guys I scrubbed out bad in the main event. Had 2 byes then went 2-2-1 to drop at 4-2-1. Beat Miracles and Infect, lost to Jund and Shardless, drew with the mirror. Fun weekend though overall. Congrats Jarvis!
Rounds 1-2 Byes
Round 3: John with Merfolk
Game 1: True-Name Nemesis. That is all.
Game 2: A quick 20/20 where my opponent mulliganed to 6 and FoW'd (pitch TNN)
Game 3: I stumbled a lot and my opponent kept sandbagging Wastelands for my Mazes. Not that it mattered because TNN was in play.
All match I didn't see a single Punishing Fire
2-1 overall (1-2 in games)
Round 4: Rory on Dark Maverick
This dude was real quiet as I crushed him into dust.
Game 1: He conceded at 26 without me taking a single point of damage. Courser of Kruphix helped here.
Game 2: He plows the Titan that got my combo and then plowed my 20/20 and then died.
He never had a DRS live to untap.
2-1 overall (2-2 in games)
Round 5: Duncan on RG Lands splash white
Game 1: He has an early Manabond and Mox but fails to capitalize. I find my own Manabond a few turns later but am able to use my Loams better to establish a bigger mana pool.
The crucial turn he has:
Mox, Depths, Stage, Grove (or something) and Wasteland
I have a lot of lands but crucially:
Stage, Karakas, Wasteland, 2 other lands Plus Bog in the graveyard
1. He wastes my Karakas
2. I copy his Depths in response
3. He copies his depths in response to 2, which resolves
4. I Karakas his 20/20 and Karakas dies
5. I Waste his Grove (or w/e)
He's left with just a Mox Diamond, no hand, no ability to loam and I'm able to bog him every turn. He concedes.
Game 2: He keeps a colourless mana hand and I'm able to punish with Rishadan Ports and Primeval Titan.
The game is definitely over in the lands mirror when Titan resolves. There isn't really a good way to manage it. Maze of Ith doesn't stop the searching.
Duncan was a real nice dude, new to Lands.
3-1 overall (4-2 in games)
Round 6: Jordan on Dredge
Notes aren't very good for this match but games 2 and 3 were extremely close.
Game 1: Dredged
Game 2: I'm able to steal at 11 life.
Game 3: This is a nailbiter. In game 2 I saw him dredge Iona so I bring Karakas back in. He gets me to 1 before I can finally stabilize after Tabernacle to leave him with 2 zombies and Punishing Fire to clean up. He has a single turn to find an answer to Marit Lage but fails to do so and I win.
Jordan was also a really nice guy and took the loss in stride. I think we both had a good time racing one another.
4-1 overall (6-3 in games)
Round 7: Nick on RUG Delver
Game 1: He mulligans and gets me to 9 but I'm able to assemble a 20/20 and he can't deal with it.
Game 2: I mulligan and get blown out by Submerge
Game 3: I make a critical mistake and it could have cost me dearly...
I'm able to keep his threats in check with Punishing Fire and Maze. But late in the game I play a Taiga when I didn't need to. Since I had no Forests in play this could have allowed him to Submerge Marit Lage when I later made it. I also made a GRV when I loamed back infinite cards to 8 total in hand and forgot to discard one. Oops (Nothing had happened except a passing of the turn.)
When I go to copy Depths he asks the judge who had been watching our entire match if he could Stifle any part of the process successfully. The judge answered him fairly (Nick asked the right questions! Ask about rules interactions and not for strategic advice) and he bought a turn with a Stifle. Then Marit Lage crushed him dead.
5-1 overall (8-4 in games)
Round 8: Ben Seck on Shardless BUG
Game 1: He goes to infinite life and concedes at 25 to save time in the match when it was clear he could no longer participate in the game.
Game 2: I mulligan and forget to scry and get killed when I can't accelerate or control his board.
Game 3: He fetches up a white land and I do my best to port it to keep him off Meddling Mage but one turn I wanted to save my Thespian's Stage from his on-board Wasteland so I don't port and then he makes Meddling Mage. :( This cost me the game, I feel. He Jaces me down when I can't control it with Punishing Fire. He also Cliques away a Loam. All in all, he executed his game plan and I couldn't.
In game 3, I believe I boarded in Chalice of the Void and cast it on 1. The thinking was to protect against DRS and Surgical Extraction. However it had the opposite effect of stranding a Gamble in my hand. I tried to Krosan Grip the Chalice so I could Gamble for Volcanic Fallout but he had the Force of Will from Jacestorming for a million turns. During one his fateseal turns he bottomed Primeval Titan. :(
This is a match I feel we can and should win but I managed to throw it away. As I'll mention later I need to rethink my sideboard plans for several matchups including this one.
5-2 overall (9-6 in games)
Round 9: Owen Turtenald on Sneak & Show
We sit down for the match at our table and he introduces himself. I remind him that we have played before and he remembers: GP Atlanta, where I punt away top 16 in our round 15 match. (He had the good grace not to remind me of the details.) We're unpacking our stuff as we're summoned to the feature match area. We're put on the backup feature match.
Game 1: I have the best draw I have seen in a long time: Mox, Mox, Depths, Stage, Loam, Fetch, Crop Rotation. I am on the play against a player I THINK is on Miracles and who has mulliganned this game. :)
I make Mox, Mox and loam them back and then put Stage into play. He plays an Island and passes. I play Depths and make Marit Lage. Why make the copy now? If he wants to spend his entire turn dealing with Marit Lage then I have a huge mana advantage and can take my next turn loaming them back to my hand. If it's Karakas or Tundra+Plow I can Rotate for Wasteland.
At the end of my turn he Brainstorms. On his turn he Brainstorms again and then concedes without showing me any more cards.
It looks a lot like Miracles so I put him on Miracles.
Game 2: Owen is on the play and quickly keeps his hand, and I do as well. It's not as strong as the first but I have a Volcanic Fallout, a Krosan Grip and two Gambles paired with two Groves. So I can Gamble for Punishing Fire if he's a creature heavy version and Fallout for the inevitable Meddling Mage.
Well he puts a stop to those hopes: Lotus Petal into Ancient Tomb into Show and Tell for Griselbrand. I put in Grove. Shit. Fuck. He's on Sneak and I boarded horribly. I am going to lose.
I untap and place Gamble onto the stack and he lets it resolves without drawing 7 from Griselbrand. I get Karakas and bounce the Demon.
His turn he plays and fetche for Volcanic Island and casts Blood Moon. Okay, no problem, I can Gamble for Forest and Krosan Grip the damn thing.
We're put into live coverage here. Stream link: http://www.twitch.tv/channelfireball...51?t=11h23m44s
I Gamble for Forest and discard the Krosan Grip. :( Play the Forest and pass, settling in for a long game where I eventually lose. :(
He plays another blood moon and I'm certain to lose since I need to draw two Krosan Grips (3 left in the deck) while dodging blue for Show and Tell and more land for Sneak Attack.
I have Exploration and then land Chalice of the Void for 1 to cut off blue cantrips (and my 2 other Gambles, sadly) to try and slow him down. Chalice is pretty good in the matchup in general, but it also pins our Gambles for their answers.
He hits his land and casts Sneak Attack and I decide I need to play as many lands as possible in order to preserve my Forest in case I draw a Loam. I had been sandbagging a land (after foolishly playing Depths) for Mox Diamond as another Green source for Primeval Titan.
He puts in Griselbrand while at 8 life. I disagree with his line of play here. Later he goes to 1 life and I think that if he's willing to later go to 1 life he should have gone to 1 before the attack searching for Emrakul to complete the kill. But he attacks and goes to 15. Then he double activates and I kill him with Volcanic Fallout.
The funny thing is that my only red sources (save for Blood Moon) were those two Grove of the Burnwillows. But I was able to cast Fallout (tapping those Groves) for the kill because he doesn't gain the life thanks to Blood Moon.
So we awkwardly fist bump (I don't shake hands due to a handshake-related injury earlier this year) and he GTFOs faster than anyone I've ever seen.
Thanks to misreading what he was playing I was able to steal a win by having a card in my deck I shouldn't have had.
7-2 overall (9-7 in games)
Day 2
Round 10: Matthew on Miracles
Game 1: He's pinned on 1 plains, terrified to fetch a Tundra. In a 20 minute game I'm able to combo, porting his plains at the end of his second main phase and then "Laging" in his end step, dodging Venser. In my attack step he tries to Clique for a blocker but I Karakas it before. In his last attack he attacks with 2 Snapcasters and a Clique. Unlike previous turns I maze the two Snapcasters so he has no flying blocker. I can take the 3 damage going to 12.
Game 2: He Jaces me :(
Game 3: He Jaces me again but we'd gone to time and past our extension. If I hadn't played a Mox Diamond from hand I could have secured the draw. As it was I would draw from an empty library on turn 5 of extra turns so I conceded. I had no use for the Mox and it was a foolish act of defiance ("Look, I cast a spell!"). I would have taken the draw in that board state. My opponent did his best to secure the draw, too, topping EOT with Jace in play and doing irrelevant things with Jace in play and a low clock.
7-3 overall (10-9 in games)
Round 11: Jason on Sneak & Show
Game 1: I keep a hand weak to combo but okay to fair decks (2 mazes, punishing fire, etc) He wrecks me with Sneak Attack with Emrakul and Griselbrand. But I'm able to slow him down with three mazes which all were annihilated. Sadly he was able to re-sculpt after each attack.
Game 2: He casts Show and Tell and I put in Primeval Titan. He had put in Griselbrand. I got Karakas and something else. Then I got more lands when I attacked him.
Game 3: No Primetime but still able to score a win.
8-3 overall (12-10 in games)
Round 12: Joni on Sneak & Show
Game 1: She is on the play and leads with Volcanic Island. She Probes me and the jig is up. But it doesn't matter. She doesn't cast a meaningful spell because Rishadn Port isn't a fun card.
Game 2: Like with Jason she too cast Show and Tell and put in Griselbrand only to be met with Primeval Titan.
Titan is no joke. I'm glad I have him this weekend.
9-3 overall (14-10 in games)
Round 13: Gabe (GCB) on Infect
Here the weels fall off. The venue wasn't close to good food so I began to suffer from poor nutrition.
Game 1: He wins. I've wasted him off all lands and he's only got 2 Noble Hierach and a Glistener Elf. I'm at 5 infect. I need another turn to make Marit Lage but he draws a land. Pendelhaven. Which he realizes he can use to HARD CAST Invigorate for the kill. I'm not even mad. It was sweet.
Game 2: All of his things are kept in check with Grove/Fire. I win easily.
Game 3: I mulligan and keep a loose one of all mana and a Crop Rotation. I think that if I have the mana I can crop rotate the land away for a Maze to buy a lot of time. But he has Force and I didn't draw Loam to get the engine going and I die.
When I'm suffering from poor nutrition I make stupid judgements like in game 3. But I don't realize it at the time because I can't think straight. This definitely highlights a gap in my GP planning. I need to scope out the surrounding area for food options (grocery store, multiple fast food places to accomidate 2000 people, etc) so I can carry things on my person to eat. I never had time to stand in line at the shitty venue place, either.
From here on out it just gets worse to read.
10-3 overall (15-12 in games)
Round 14: Kale on ANT
I sat next to him several times over the event, saw him get a GRV upgraded on day 1, even. So I know what he's playing. He's a bright kid who, I think, just needs to work on his mechanics.
Game 1: He sputters off and I kill him.
Game 2: I have a perfect hate hand: Chalice of the Void and Sphere of Resistance. I draw another Sphere. Then pass! Then die. :( I didn't play CotV because I wanted to play it for 1 on my next turn, despite knowing that Chalice on 0 is good enough to not die that turn so I can start deploying spheres to get to the mid-game. Another choice decision informed by not eating well.
Game 3: Mox then Chalice for 0. Draw-go for a while. Then he Chain of Vapors the Chalice and kills me. In this case it should have been Chalice for 1. In this game I find all 4 of my Thespian's Stage. If any of them had been Bojuka Bog or Rishadan Port I would have fared much better and obviously if they were Dark Depths I would have just won (or forced the Chain of Vapor, preserving Chalice). They were terrible dredges.
This round upsets me the most. I had an easy win in game 2 and failed to capitalize on it. The strategy for Storm is very simple: Deny them LED and then make spells cost infinite. Port them and then make Marit Lage.
10-4 overall (16-14 in games)
Round 15: Paul on Merfolk
Game 1 and 2 are dictated by TNN.
My sideboard plan sucks for Merfolk. I Chaliced for 1 to protect against Surgical Extraction on Loam and Punishing Fire but it strands too many important cards in my hand. I need to figure out what the fuck is going on with this matchup because it should be easy, in theory. Maybe I treat it like a slower Burn deck and just go combo centric, ignoring Force of Wills.
So I finish 10-5 overall (16-16 in games). A few memorable highlights like killing the Maverick player and Owen and the Primeval Titans off Show and Tells, but I'm ultimately unhappy with the performance.
The List:
Main deck:
- 4 Mox Diamond
- 4 Exploration
- 4 Life from the Loam
- 4 Gamble
- 4 Wasteland
- 4 Grove of the Burnwillows
- 4 Thespian's Stage
- 4 Rishadan Port
- 4 Punishing Fire
- 3 Taiga
- 3 Dark Depths
- 3 Tranquil Thicket
- 3 Crop Rotation
- 3 Maze of Ith
- 1 Misty Rainforest
- 1 Wooded Foothills
- 1 Windswept Heath
- 1 Karakas
- 1 Manabond
- 1 Bojuka Bog
- 1 Glacial Chasm
- 1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
- 1 Forest
Sideboard:
- 4 Krosan Grip
- 4 Sphere of Resistance
- 2 Chalice of the Void
- 2 Primeval Titan
- 1 Boil
- 1 Boseiju, Who Shelter's All
- 1 Volcanic Fallout
I will be cutting Boil and Boseiju. They aren't impactful enough. Likely they will turn into Pithing Needle and Dark Depths. The main deck felt great and I only felt the loss of the 4th Dark Depths in the cases where I needed to draw exactly that.
I finish 162nd overall.
♀
If anyone is interested here were my matchups:
------
R1: Neil on Imperial(?) Painter
Result: W 2-1
Overall Record: 1-0
G1: My very first game of sanctioned legacy is fortunately not representative of the rest of the day. He plays a Grindstone. Then he plays a Servant. I let it resolve before I attempt to Stage, he blasts my stage in response. First lesson learned. Oops.
G2-3: I make a Marit Lage token mostly unharassed, although I did have to name Grindstone with a Pithing Needle in one game which bought me turns. He may or may not have played a Blood Moon one of the games. I would be surprised if he didn't play one, but on the whole this matchup luckily contained at most just the one. I would assume he had Imperial Recruiters, but I never saw one.
------
R2: David Long on Lands
Result: Draw 1-1-1
Overall Record: 1-0-1
G1: I recognize his name as I was just watching VODs of him the night before to learn how to play the deck better. First I have to survive a combo deck with 4-9 Blood Moons, then a nightmare mirror. Welcome to Legacy. I learn another hard G1 lesson after he Stage's my Depths in response to my own activation. I have a lot to learn about the cat-and-mouse nature of this matchup.
G2: I play a little less reckless and make sure to Waste/Port anything I perceive as threatening to my own combo. I somehow get a Marit Lage and win.
G3: We have both Bojuka Bog'd each other and end up in turns. I think he honestly would have won, but I don't accept when he asks me to concede.
-----
R3: Jon on Sneak and Show
Result: W 2-0?
Overall Record: 2-0-1
G1: T1 Show & Tell into Emrakul off City of Traitors and Petal. I put a waste into play, kill his land and crop rotate a green source into Tabernacle. This is the first time I feel like I made a big-boy legacy play.
G2: Foggy on this one. I believe he only played Griselbrands and drew some cards. I combo quickly and Karakas my path clear.
-----
R4: Anthony on Jeskai Stoneblade
Result: D 1-1-1
Overall Record: 2-0-2
G1: He plays a Stoneforge Mystic, I punish it. I deny him mana. I combo out.
G2: Oh my god. The grindiest game. Early on he has me locked with a Blood Moon and Pithing Needle on Stage. I trudge out of that with Grips and put a Chalice @ 1 and Chalice @ 2 and now I feel pretty good. He passes about 5 turns, but because I locked myself out of Loam I am also drawing slowly. I still feel like this benefits me until he Will of the Councils one chalice and Wears the other. I stay alive with Glacial Chasm, Stage and Exploration for a while until he Sudden Shocks me. I am bewildered at why that card is still in his deck. He says he didn't have enough cards to bring in against me so he kept that.
G3: I would have lost this. He was hitting me with a Jitte'd Nemesis. He asks me to concede; I don't. Sorry.
-----
R5: Hunter on Grixis Delver
Result: W 2-0?
Overall Record: 3-0-2
This is my first constructed GP so I don't really expect to do well and haven't taken notes. As a result, a couple of these matches are foggy. I'm pretty sure he was on Grixis Delver. At least he was playing Young Pyromancers and Delvers. I burned them with Punishing Fires. I won in 2 or 3 games, I'm not sure. He played Pokemon Haunter cards as his Elementals. He explained how the guys at his LGS call him that so he embraced it. That's about all I got on this match.
-----
R6: Milo on (DnT?!)
Result: W 2-0?
Overall Record: 4-0-2
I want to say this was DnT, but for the life of me I remember this matchup least of all. I think during these middle rounds I was just stunned I was winning at thinking forward to the next match rather than reflecting.
-----
R7: Patrick on Miracles
Result: W 2-1?
Overall Record: 5-0-2
I was terrified of running into this guy. I had seen him next to me at X-0-2 for a while and knew he was on Miracles. Everything I had read was that Miracles was this horrendous matchup for lands. I don't remember how it went exactly, but I feel like he spent a lot of time topping only to not find a Counterbalance. He hard countered some plays and Plowed a couple Marit Lages, but on the whole I was able to recur the combo unharassed and win.
-----
R8: Cedric Phillips on Reanimator
Result: W 2-1
Overall Record: 6-0-2
G1: This is where the matches get interesting. This one was absolutely bananas. He wins the roll. Entombs Griselbrand. Lotus Petal Reanimates him, draws 7 cards. I have't even played a land yet. Now I know how pros are so consistent; their decks give them the superstar treatment. Anyway, I actually survive a little bit by Crop Rotating into Maze of Ith. I slowly build my board as he is at 6 life and can't draw any more cards unfairly. He eventually entombs a Inkwell and I can't stop it in three turns.
G2: I'm unsure how we got to this board state, but basically it's Marit Lage and two Maze of Iths staring down Inkwell, Griselbrand, Ashen Rider, Iona naming Green and Jace. Cedric has drawn a lot of cards and as such is at 2 life. I'm at a life total where I can Maze two dudes, kill Iona/Inkwell and survive a hit or two from Ashen Rider, so we are stalemated. Cedric doesn't know I left one Punishing Fire in, so he ultimates Jace and starts milling me. I'm porting three of his four lands every turn and majorly telegraphing with 3 untapped Groves. As he stated later, there's not much he can do about it anyway, but I'm surprised he kept milling me. Three or four agonizing mills later it's still not in my GY, but I eventually find a Gamble. He rolls to take Krosan Grip out of my hand (I apparently don't know how to SB for this match) and says "I'm guessing that's not what you Gambled for". Nope. I burn him.
G3: He forgoes card advantage and goes for the throat entombing and resurrecting Inkwell this time. I have Tabernacle and Karakas out, some mana and one crop rotation. I'm praying for some action and take two hits. Before the third strike I find my second Crop Rotation. To Cedric's surprise/horror, I double rotate into the combo. He has two lands. He lets Inkwell go so he has maximum mana to find an answer. He resurrects a Griselbrand, draws cards, does some digging, but can't find an answer. I Karakas Griselbrand and swing for the win.
-----
R9: Gene on Shardless BUG
Result: W 2-1
Overall Record: 7-0-2
G1: He plays a Deathrite, I burn it. I combo, I win.
G2: He plays a T1 deathrite again. I try to burn it, he counters it and eats it. I set a chalice at 1. He plays a Shardless into a Deathrite and like an idiot I forget the trigger. Two active Deathrites, there's no hope for me.
G2: A little grindier. I name Deathrite with a Needle. He tries to activate it to take my lands. He insists it's a mana ability. I call a judge. It gets resolved. Deathrite remains impotent. I have tons of time to dredge into my combo.
-----
Day 2
-----
R10: Joni on Sneak and Show
Result: W 2-1
Overall Record: 8-0-2
Joni is from OKC. I am from Seattle. I am wearing a Sonics cap. I must win this.
G1: She sneaks Emrakul into play and I have nothing.
G2: She sneaks Griselbrand into play. I put Karakas out. I bounce it and she doesn't draw cards for some reason. Due to this I run away with the game.
G3: I have a Karakas out and she is trying to find enough red mana to play Sneak and activate it twice. She succeeds, but by this point I have enough permanents to make a Marit Lage, sac 6 other permanents, block and retaliate.
-----
R11: Eddie on Death and Taxes
Result: W 2-1
Overall Record: 9-0-2
G1: Eddie mulls then scrys and accidentally draws his scry on the play. He calls a judge and I get to pitch a card. He has one land and two moms. I feel bad, but I'm not in the businesses of charity, especially at this round, so I take the land. He topdecks a land, but it's a nonbasic, so he only gets to play a mom before I Waste it. He plays another nonbasic and another mom and the same thing happens. He's so far behind I easily combo out without harassment.
G2: I could be confusing this with the earlier match that I think was on DnT, but at any rate, this game happened whether it was Eddie or Day 1. He gets a Wingmate, Thalia, Serra and Mom out. I have a couple Mazes but things are dire. I take two turns to kill mom and try to start burning the others, but it's too slow and he has lethal.
G3: He plays a Serra Avenger and then spends two turns playing and equipping a sword. I grip his sword. I take a couple hits from Serra before I find action. Avenger chumps Marit Lage to buy a turn but he finds nothing for the second attempt. Eddie reveals a Path off the top of his deck.
-----
R12: Bradley on Jeskai Stoneblade
Result: W 2-0
Overall Record: 10-0-2
G1: Bradley durdles, plays a Stoneforge into Batterskull. I lock down his mana and combo.
G2: I have a chalice at 1 and he puts out an enchantment: sac to destroy (exile?) target artifact or enchantment. I suspect his plan is to wait for me to make Marit Lage, destroy chalice and plow it. I have a grip but only enough mana to either grip or make the token. I feel confident enough and far enough ahead that if he does that I can recur the combo. Instead he lets me make the token and untap. I take that opportunity to grip it before attacking.
-----
R13: Brian on Miracles
Result: L 0-2
Overall Record: 10-1-2
G1: Brian plows Marit Lage twice before getting a counterlock while I'm at 59 life. I wanted to bog his gy in response to the second plow (via Snapcaster), but I realize it's game one and it's in the sb. After the match Brian claims he had counterbalance out already anyway. I feel like he didn't yet, but I don't recall. He was probably right and it was inevitable anyway. He tries to convince me to concede the game as I'm on lock, but he had to snapcaster his StP, so I draw a few turns to see if I can get a natural combo. Instead I draw gambles, explorations and general garbage. I scoop at 30-something life to his mentor army in order to try and give myself time to win game 2.
G2: I durdle. He counter-locks me quickly, follows it up with a blood moon, and I really can't do much. This is where it all ends. Later that day at home, I watch him draw completely dry in the Semis vs Jarvis and I sigh at what could have been.
-----
R14: Paolo on Grixis Delver
Result: L 0-2
Overall Record: 10-2-2
G1: If you recall, I am a complete legacy noob. As a result I haven't seen Stifle all tournament and completely walk into one on t1. He Stifles a waste and I'm down a land. He plays lots of Deathrites. He picks apart my resources and wins.
G2: I have an explosive start, but he has a Surgical and I lose all my Loams. Now I have a lot of mana and no gas. He plays a ton of creatures and I eventually get to a PFire, which I try to keep up with his Pyromancer and Deathrites. I play a Tabernacle which forces him to sac some stuff. He plays a second Pyromancer. I'm still very close to dead and he needs to stop playing threats because I can only burn two things a turn. He stifles my PFire trigger which not only keeps me off killing a creature but makes another elemental. He now has lethal and I'm dead.
-----
R15: Thilo on Miracles
Result: W 2-0
Overall Record: 11-2-2
G1: He durdles with top. I combo quickly.
G2: He durdles with top and I resolve a choke. I have ports out so he uses his mana to cast a counterbalance. I grip it, he flips a counterspell. Resolves. He has no mana for several turns. He finds a single island which he uses to brainstorm for an answer the turn before I combo. He has nothing. He says he's worried about finishing in the money, but I tell him I think he's good. He finished in the 90's somewhere, so I hope he found relief in that.
I finish 37th. I am elated. I love lands.

This match was INFURIATING to watch. I was begging the judge to issue a slow play warning to Cedric. He took LITERALLY three minutes tanking on paying for Inkwell's Tabernacle trigger.
He would have wrecked you if he reanimated Tidespout Tyrant since that's an easy way to bounce the Marit Lage and is non-legendary.
♀
He actually posted his list and isn't playing Tidespout. Here's a quote from him on his decklist from his FB: "There isn't a spot where you are actively searching for Grave Titan. Tidespout Tyrant is good against lands, but so is Inkwell Leviathan and Inkwell is good across numerous matchups where Tidespout isn't."
I'm not denying I was amazingly lucky on that matchup (and probably many others).
