    Re: [Primer/Deck] High Tide

Are there any current High Tide players who don't use Candelabra of Tawnos? I am curious to hear how this type of High Tide performs in the current metagame.

Also, it looks like discard is a problem for the deck. What defense if available? What about Library of Leng, Scroll Rack, or Noxious Revival? I saw that some deck use Leyline of Sanctity, but Leyline is a lottery ticket in MonoU deck, so I'm not sure if this is the right option.

I'm not sure whether you were talking about something else, but based on the rule 702.25d Phasing doesn't help much with Fading because phased out permanents do not lose counts and do not change zones. So, for example, if your opponent used Parallax Tide to deprive you of mana, Teferi's Realm won't help.

Brainstorm and Tops if running them can help against discard, as well as flusterstorm if you run those as well.

As far as no candles, all I can think of is to replace the candle slots with more turnabouts, maybe run a snap as it doubles as being able to bounce a hate bear and is a mini untap effect.

Thanks. I completely forgot about Tops, perhaps, because I don't have them. I can see how two Tops and Brain Freeze can win a game (assuming no Emrakul or Gaea's Blessing).

I watched videos of you piloting the decks a while ago. Do you have any recent experience playing the deck in the current metagame?

With dig banned it's basically what it was a year ago before khans was printed, if I would have won my last match in St Louis I would have placed 30th with my tiebreakers. So close!

I haven't played this deck in competative the last year since I feels it's been getting worse and worse. It might do well in US but in EU I can hardly get a single win nowadays. I do however pull it out every now and then for casual games and tournaments, and when I do I play this:

    Deck: High Tide : R-Type

    //SORCERIES
    4 Merchant Scroll
    4 Time Spiral
    4 Ponder
    4 Preordain
    1 Past in Flames

    //INSTANTS
    4 Brainstorm
    4 High Tide
    4 Force of Will
    3 Flusterstorm
    2 Turnabout
    2 Intuition
    1 Blue Sun's Zenith
    1 Capsize

    //ARTIFACTS
    3 Candelabra of Tawnos
    2 Sensei's Divining Top

    //LANDS
    4 Flooded Strand
    4 Polluted Delta
    8 Island
    2 Volcanic Island

    //Sideboard
    1 Echoing Truth
    1 Wipe Away
    1 Hurkyl's Recall
    1 Flusterstorm
    1 Pact of Negation
    1 Brain Freeze
    3 Pyroclasm
    3 Pyromancer Ascension
    3 Grafdigger's Cage

The addition of a second color does a lot, IMO. Pyromancer Ascension is a beast against Miracle (if you manage to stick it) and other counter-heavy decks. The Pyroclasm helps against Elves and DnT. The Past In Flames are mainly there for discard heavy decks and works well with Intuition.

    That's my 2 cents. Cheers

I've advocated UR High Tide off and on for a while. This is my go to when I play high tide but I don't use Candels / Tops. PiF plays better with spells and lets you abuse intuition. The red sideboard is also very helpful. Admittedly I don;t own Candels (full disclosure) but even when I tested the deck with them proxied I felt like the UR was at a minimum as good and at a maximum slightly better. This does push the deck further towards "combo" vs "control" (referencing the Top and/or Counterbalance lists).

I'd have to double check but I'm somewhat sure my MD is,
    - 3 Candel
    - 2 Top
    - 1 BSZ
    - 1 Capsize
    - 1 Timespiral
    - 1 Merchant scroll (or a land...cant remember)

    + 3 Cunning Wish
    + 1 Intuition
+ 1 Turnabout (you want 3 for intuition)
    + 1 Flusterstorm / Pact of Negation / Misdirection
    + 3 Probe

    The Sideboard varies.

If I was taking High Tide to a tournament I would play this. If I didn't have Candels I would 100% play this.

    Re: [Primer/Deck] High Tide

Top is a necessity around here to float cards on top of your library. Might be possible that the cantrips are enough, but I am always happy to see the top.

Playing candle-less might work, but I like the candle for consistency. They also speed up the combo a lot. I often go for capsize to generate inf mana and bounce the opponents board.
But I can see the power of going spell focused, I really do. Sometimes I think I just don't try it cause I don't want to see my candles become useless

New Oath of the Gatewatch Card!

Sphinx of the Final Word 5UU

    Can't be countered

    Flying, Hexproof

Instants and sorcery spells you control can't be countered by spells or abilities.

    5/5

Is This viable with such a high cost? Improves Miracles game greatly I suppose this would be amazing on paper!

    ^^

    Pro's:
    - This just wins the game in so many ways I cannot begin to describe.
    - In the matchup you intend to use it, you may actually get enough time to cast it.
    - Only Terminus / Supreme Verdict would mess up this plan. They board out that stuff.

    Con's:
    - Miracles plays Mentors now. This gives us considerably less time to set up this win.
    - The card is rediculously narrow. There's literally one deck you'd ever use it against.

You know what this sounds like to me? "Danger of cool things."
If it works, it's "in your face!" awesome. If it doesn't, it's sooo bad...
Yet, if you have sideboard space, and all you ever lose against is Miracles, by all means test it.
It does win the game against Miracles. Easily. Unless they have Mentor on turn <6.

The effects are good. The obvious problem is it costs too much and you don't have a reliable way of finding it. I think it you power through high tide and time spiral then it is a "win more" card. I don't want to wait until turn 7 to deal with a turn 2 counterbalance. So I would rather have more specific, high impact cards that help with that. The sideboard in this deck is somewhat tight.

You asked a simple question I gave a simple answer.

I admit this deck isn't a main focus but it is my back up muse.

Thank you for a constructive and meaningful response. Full disclosure - I am still in the process of assembling my High-Tide deck, so don't have real experience playing with it.

However, while reading this forum and watching SCG videos of the deck in action, I noticed that G2 is usually much harder for the deck because it has only one strategy to win. So I was thinking about some surprise alternative strategy after sideboarding.

Initially, I was thinking about adding Palinchron as he can serve both as mana generator and finisher, if I need. Later I saw Pearl Lake Ancient and liked him because of his Flash'ability and Uncounter'ability. And Sphinx of the Final Word looks like another interesting option, especially against permission. However, all three creatures require five Islands and High Tide or four Islands and two High Tide. And if we still can resolve High Tide in G2, perhaps we still can win without any creates.

So, I agree with you assessment. And still like the idea of experimenting in this direction :).

    Re: [Primer/Deck] High Tide

If one plays with any available slots in the Sideboard, I could see this working against the mirror or miracles. This is on paper. Sure, a 7-drop is not ideal at all, but this could be a second route against any blue deck that runs more than 6 counters. If we can keep people off bay from their creatures or other pressure, jamming this guy could be a clock or initiate our high tide combo.

I can see this being a win-more in the early game because if you jam this early through a high tide, then you could be on your way to winning any how and it could be a waste of that mana unles they do not counter your high tides and wait to counter the time spirals and such.

I agree, the thing costs 7, 1 more than Time Spiral. If you can get to the point of having enough mana to cast Spiral, the "Put in a big uncounterable big creature idea" isn't all that exciting. By the time it comes down, other decks will have you lower on life to just race you, while other decks will have ways of answering it by either blocking or mass removal.

Against Miracles they don't always take out all the Terminus because it's a 6 cmc spell, so it could even be moved to the bottom of the deck by that. But even before that it's a big creature, the idea of adding a big creature to High Tide has just never been something that improves it. It might have a nice surprise factor & catch someone off guard game 2, against someone who takes out all their removal but that's about as far as it would go.

I know. My aim was just to highlight how bad your comment was. It just didn't add anything to the discussion.

Now,to be clear,I also don't think the card will be played at all. Too expensive and too narrow, and might not do the trick.
That said, would love to to drop that against SnT while playing Solidarity...

I suppose it is too narrow, but I am glad to hear thoughts on it! A 5 drop could just be nice and more doable, but we are not in magical Christmasland. How are results recently? I haven't played recently, and the local shop I play has another high tide deck. We haven't played one another yet thankfully!

Just a question for those who are trying UR High Tide: when spells are copied by Pyromancer Ascension, they aren't countered by Counter/Top, right?

I'm currently debating if I want to try this hybrid version. Now, I've been reading a lot about how High Tide isn't that viable anymore. Does that mean you guys just gave up, or is UR the way to go?
