I'm really surprised people so frequently cut a library. I'd sooner cut the 4th Bob than the first Library. The card is a sensei's top on crack.
In other news here's a small report of two weekly events.
R1 Miracles: G1 He has Forces and STP for my hand, and I topdeck manlands while he topdecks counters. G2 I board into D&T and get under him. 2-0
R2 Jund: I keep a loose 7 and am able to kill his goyfs and keep him off of 1BB for long enough to win. G2 I'm down to 1 life and into forced chump mode with Dryad arbor, then I topdeck a Knight and she ends up winning me the game. 2-0
R3 Eldrazi: G1 my opponent has 2 quick smashers. G2 I Jund him out. G3 Goes super long (~T20) and I don't ever have 4 mana sources at the same time. The second tutored up Displacer killed me. 1-2
R4 Eldrazi: I don't remember these games. I tempo him out without much trouble. 2-0
R1 Cycle.dec: My opponent isn't playing cards that interact well with me. I luck into T2/3 Marit Llages both games. 2-0
R2 BUG Elves: This is the weird brew that recently top8ed the thing. I'm not aware of the decklist and it hurts me. G1 he does his thing, G2 he stumbles on mana, G3 I flood out. 1-2
R3 Miracles: G1 I play a quick chalice, play around Counterbalance, and generally don't let him interact. G2 my T1 Thalia gets there. 2-0
R4 Esper Stoneblade: G1 my opponent had discard and counters, but no threat and not enough mana, so eventually something resolves and I win without knowing what the opponent is on. G2 My opponent Resolves a TNN and a Jace and I can't find a 3rd land. G3 goes super long. I loam for marginal value (1 thicket, 1 wasteland) while my opponent does basically nothing. Eventually I start the 2x Stirring Wildwood beats. With <20 card left in my deck I find a Knight and Bob into Zeniths. My opponent isn't able to find enough relevant cards and concedes to the overwhelming advantage. 2-1
I cut the 4th Bob when I first picked the deck up, but I wanted to give Niklas' exact 75 a try. In the future I'll definitely trim on Bob before Sylvan Library.
16th at SCG Columbus

7 round event, final record 5-2. Not going to go into any sideboard guides, I can never remember what I do exactly.
*Round 1. Win(2-0) Jund Depths(Kennen Haas). Game 1 Sylvan Library draws me a lot of cards I wasteland him a few time for him to have awkward mana, he didn't draw punishing fire to kill me when I was at 2 life. Game 2 I play a couple bobs early he can't answer them, play a Leyline, small pox is a good card that keeps him in this game and plays The Abyss but was able to draw wasteland to kill his copied Dryad arbor/thespian's stage to get in lethal.
*Round 2. Win(2-0) R/W Painter. Seen this guy playing painter before so I make sure I get a basic forest or mox(can't remember), he is able to play a turn 1 magus of the moon and I think I played out a bob, he got Jaya out and is dealing 3 to me a turn with the discard(I believe I have a chalice on 1), finally draw a punishing fire and kill magus and take over the game. Game 2 I believe he gets ensnaring bridge draw and has 3 of them out by the time the game ends, I slowly dwindle him down with the combination of punishing fire, KOTR for wasteland and Garruk making guys waiting for him to stumble.
*Round 3. Win(2-0) Infect. Game 1 I think he keeps a double inkmoth hand and a couple probes, he never draws colored mans, easy game. Game 2 I don't think he has a turn 1 threat and I'm able to get a sylvan library and Liliana going, I just remember I still had 2 removal spells in hand by the end of the game and 2 really big KOTR's.
*Round 4. Loss(1-2) Rug Delver. I have already tried to forget this game but I seem to always lose the die roll against delver and have awkward hands. I was pretty rude/salty to my opponent by the end of the match, in the 3rd game I know I had to mulligan to 6 cards on the draw and it was another 1 mana hand that I kept and didn't draw a 2nd land for a couple turns, I did get a couple things going then my opponent drew 2 wastelands off the top with no manipulation to get them and the game ended. I apologized to my opponent for getting upset and moved on and tried to forget about that match.
*Round 5. Win(2-1) Death and Taxes. Game 1 I get a life from the loam, grove, punishing fire draw, the game went on for a while until he finally conceded. Game 2 He has a double vial draw and I can't recover. Game 3 I play a turn 1 dark confidant, followed by a turn 2 removal spell, followed by a turn 3 double dark confidant, so I have 3 dark confidant triggers, I start attacking the following turn he has crusader out and blocks one, so now only have 2 out and I've take some major damage from triggers, I think he blocks another one and I'm left with 1 and at 4 life, I have the game locked up but revealed a toxic deluge taking me to 1, I decide to Liliana my bob and he doesn't draw a creature to cast, I win with a 2/2(RIP is out) KOTR in a couple turns,
*Round 6. Lose(0-2) Grixis Delver. This guy beats me at the last SCG Classic twice, once in the swiss and in the top 8. I lose the die roll against delver again. Game 1 I loss to a couple deathrites and my bob triggers, but I was in control of this game but 2 deathrites are hard to beat when they can keep your KOTR low. Game 2 I keep a terrible and of 4 lands 2 mox and an ooze, he bolted my Ooze and did what delver does, I deserved to lose this game.
*Round 7. Win(2-1) UR Delver. KOTR is a good card combined with mox and basic forest to play around price of progress.
So in the last 2 SCG's I have loss 4 matches, all to delver. I think I just need to test the match up more. I just seem to always have to mulligan or just bad hands against them and I seem to lose the die roll.
@NEELEY
How is Arlinn behaving?
About Delver, do you miss the 3rd swords?
Gratz on the finish
This is the first tournament I have used swords, so maybe it needs to be a 3rd to help with the delver/infect match ups. Didn't get to cast Arlin but the object is to have another good walker for shardless and miracles and be able to get both going if you draw both in the same game.
On a second note I would like to hear peoples opinion on sideboarding in the grixis delver match, use my list for the reference, does on the play/draw matter? Thanks!
Usually against Grixis I bring 4-5 cards, in your case I would only bring 3-4. 2 swords, 1 charm and possibly 1 deluge.(but I don't like it in the MU and if you bring it only otp or daze would be an issue).
The things to take out are teeg+Lilis. Probably the easiest delver to take out cards since lili is not that nice in the mu.
I actually think that Liliana is pretty solid against Grixis; they can't typically remove Knight or Scavenging Ooze, so ticking up will eventually run them out of token material, and her ultimate is enough to make up for a lot of tokens on board. I tend to cut some number of Chalices on the draw because it just doesn't do enough, especially if they already have a Delver. Postboard, my removal package looks like this:
3 Punishing Fire
3 Abrupt Decay
3 Swords to Plowshares
2 Liliana of the Veil
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Toxic Deluge
Played a league today, went 4-1.
Won against elves, zombardment, and 2 storm decks. My loss was to 4 color cascade, too many tarmogoyf and true names.
I changed my board to
3 swords
3 leyline
2 golgari charm
1 Garruk
1 Arlin
2 thoughtseize
1 rec sage
2 Thalia
The board felt good
Really like that board. I usually run 2 Canonists instead of the thalia's, but it depends the MU you are expecting.
Keep giving feedback on the Arlin, really really curious about her.
How are you feeling in the Miracles matchup? I think the deck dropped in performance with the amount of mentors on their side.
Is there any reason to not run the DD combo? Especially against BUG decks, having the combo feels so good!!
Here is my sideboard which has done me very well. Can someone sell me on StP? The only thing I can think of cutting is Slaughter Games as it is really only for Omnitell.
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Containment Priest
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Slaughter Games
3 Leyline of the Void
2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Thoughtseize
2 Toxic Deluge
Here is the weaker argument for STP:
There are some decks in the format (Infect, RUG Delver, Eldrazi, maybe others) that with some of their openings challenge you to deal with a creature immediately or be at a significant disadvantage. STP helps here by increasing the density of removal, as well as giving us a higher amount of early interaction.
The stronger argument for STP:
While most of the fair decks in legacy heavily feature small creatures and 1 mana spells, there has been an increase in decks that do not. STP shines against these decks. Whenever you take out chalices against a fair deck (Merfolk, D&T, Deadguy Ale, Shardless, Eldrazi, Stompy, etc) there is a very low cost to bringing in STP.
4C Loam also has a weakness to more fringe decks. The mainboard is made to beat the "inbread" legacy metagame (12+ 1drops, nonbasic islands, small creatures, counterspells). It isn't designed with something like Nic Fit in mind, and STP also tends to do well against these kinds of decks.
I would remove Slaughter Games because that is absolute garbage unless you expect to play against Omni/High Tide, and even then Canonist might be better. After that, it depends on your meta.
Is GY hate worth a whole 3(4) slots?
Are you playing against enough fast combo to need Thoughtsieze? (remember that against "chalice mirrors" you can be boarding STP instead of TS now)
After that, Toxic Deluge sometimes fills the role of an unconditional removal spell. I personally would not go below 2 board wipes, but it is something to consider.
My recommendation would be to cut Thoughtsiezes.
Hey everybody,
I am playing Loam for some time now and I also had some minor successes with it (some top 8s in local tournaments, last month 3rd and 2nd). I even played it some time without red (was very afraid of Bloodmoon). My last list looks like this:
Deck: Loam
Lands (27 Karten)
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Windswept Heath
1 Karakas
2 Bayou
1 Badlands
1 Savannah
1 Taiga
1 Scrubland
1 Forest
1 Swamp
4 Wasteland
1 Barren Moor
1 Tranquil Thicket
1 Maze of Ith
1 Thespian's Stage
1 Dark Depths
3 Grove of the Burnwillows
1 Dryad Arbor
Creatures (11 Karten)
4 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Dark Confidant
1 Deathrite Shaman
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Scavenging ooze
Permanents (13 Karten)
4 Mox Diamond
4 Chalice of the void
3 Liliana of the Veil
2 Sylvan library
Instants und sorceries (10 Karten)
3 Abrupt decay
3 Punishing Fire
2 Life from the Loam
2 Green Sun's zenith
Sideboard (15 Karten)
2 Faerie Macabre
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Crop Rotation
2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Pyroclasm
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Arlinn Kord
2 Swords to plowshares
2 Thoughtseize
1 Golgari Charm
1 Reclamation sage
Maindeck I am still playing 61 Cards, because I like having the combo main and also two basics (maybe its still because of Bloodmoon. I think of cutting one basic since the amounts of blood moons seams to drop again. For the sideboard I pretty much like it like it's now. I couldn't test Arlinn as well, but the Pyroclasm came in nice. I came unexpected against d'n't and it ist mostly easier to cast.
What I would like to ask you is whether someone tested Grim Flayer. It seams like a nice utility card for the Green sun's zenith and a good addition to Dark Confidant. But I am not sure what to cut. I mean I had some times when I would like to search for some beater other than a Knight of the Reliquary. Maybe someone was able to adapt the card? I was thinking about cutting a Confidant or staying at 61 and cutting a basic.
What are your ideas?
Grüße
I would advise cutting that gigantic package of 2faeries+bog+crop for 3 leylines. They are more powerful and reliable. That way you can fit an extra swords or something that you might feel the need.
I am intrigued about Grim Flayer but ain't playing for a few weeks so I am not sure how he behaves. The only card that seems logical to cut is the 2nd Library, at least for testing purposes.
If you feel you need a beater and the effect is not powerful enough a goyf is always better, but the semi-library on top of a 4/4 seems good.
Thanks for the fast reply.
I have to say, that I like this package of grave hate. I started without crop rotation, but the Faerie Macabre alone one me several games against tin fins, storm, dredge and reanimator (the latest game against Reanimator I one against his show and tell-non legendaries with getting a Marit lage. One Knight was just too slow and couldn't do it, but the rotation one me that game. Even my reanimator opponent couldn't believe it that I turned around the game with the crop rotation). In the end I think its just a matter what you prefer, but so many players count with leyline - but not with faerie.
I might consider exchanging the library, but I will not have that much time next month to test though. As I played without red I had one goyf maine, which felt pretty good in some games, just to get a "simple" beater out of the zenith. But I also had the downside that with rest in peace the goyf is only 0/1 while the flayer is still 2/2. So, I guess it's testing time.
Just a short update: I was able to test with the flayer today on a 14-Person Tournament. I changed 1 Dark Confidant for 1 Grim Flayer.
Matchups were:
2-1 Thought lash where I grabbed the Flayer, but maybe Gaddock Teeg would have been better
2-1 Mud
2-1 Hypergenesis , where Chalice on 0 was pretty good (It was a budget version without Forces and show and tells. But it was 2-0 nevertheless)
1-2 vs. Merfolk. The game I one here was because of Grim Flayer, that was not handled. He filtered me enough removal and stuff to win the game. And he tramples over True-name nemesis. The other rounds I lost because of mulligan to 4 and a hand that was too slow.
In the End I was first (I drawed last round) and I am still not sure on the Flayer.
Pros:
- He has Trample
- Able to be grabbed with Zenith
- Its fun to yell "GRIM FLAYER!"
- He can fill the grave if needed
Cons:
- It feels weird, that you don't draw a card and that he is just setting up the next turn
- It's not always easy to get him big
I think I will give him a try once more. In the end it could be a question about the local meta.
Maybe this gives some new ideas to the Discussion
Grüße
