The IQ-winning decklist is caseyc 's list from a post on March 4th.
I like Surgical more than Macabre against Lands, Miracles, and Storm, and otherwise they are roughly comparable IMO. I don't see any reason to run Macabre over Surgical.

Just 4-0'd my weekly local. This is the second 4-0 in a row for me with an identical list. I had been testing the ballista plan online but chickened out at the last minute in paper because of a complete lack of miracles in my local metagame and a superfluity of death and taxes. Currently running stock maindeck:
4 D Depths
4 T Stage
4 V catacombs
3 Bayou
3 Urborg
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Sejiri Steppe
1 Swamp
1 Forest
1 Ghost Quarter
4 V Hexmage
4 E Spirit Guide
4 L Petal
4 C Rotation
4 S Scrying
3 E map
4 T seize
4 Duress
3 P Needle
3 N o t World
and a sideboard:
3 A Decay
3 S Extraction
3 D Confidant
2 Dread of Night
2 Lost Legacy
1 Karakas
1 P Needle
Round 1: BUG Delver (2-1)
G 1: First opening hand had a bojuka bog, a steppe, three discard spells, and two spirit guides. My next hand had a stage, a verdant, a map, a duress, and two other cards so I kept it. Opponent opens on delver go. I respond by playing out the verdant and a lotus petal I drew from the top to play duress around daze. Opponent revealed a hand of misty, force, daze, brainstorm, goyf. I took the brainstorm -- but in retrospect I should have maybe taken the force? I wasn't sure how to prioritize the map I had in hand. I'm not sure it would have mattered, because the following turn he plays misty, cracks, and plays a jitte off the top. I play map (he doesn't force or daze) and manage to assemble to combo, but by the time I'm ready to make a marit lage he has me at 8 life with a flipped delver hooked up to a jitte with four counters. Unpleasant. I draw a seemingly endless stream of NotW's and he eventually draws and plays a deathrite. I'm desperately trying to topdeck a needle, even though I know he still has the force, but he deathrite's me to death while I'm looking (he also forced a crop rotation trying to find the bog to exile my graveyard in response to a shaman activation)
(OUT: 3 NotW, 1 Map. IN: 3 decay, 1 Needle)
G 2: Opening hand had Urborg, Thespian Stage, Depths, and Thoughtseize. Opponent goes to six cards. I urborg-thoughtseize turn one and he reveals delver, brainstorm, wasteland, and three fetches. I take the brainstorm in the hopes that he will play delver turn one, which works out. I play a stage and needle wasteland, and I have no idea what happened next but I know it ended with him collecting his cards from the table and sighing loudly.
G 3: This game went long, with a number of discard spells going back and forth, both of us playing needles and having them decayed, and ultimately settling on the following board states: HIM - Bayou, U Sea, U Sea, Trop, Wasteland. ME - Bayou, Bayou, Forest, Lotus Petal, Thespian Stage. He has one mystery card in hand, and I have three crop rotations and a decay. He draws and (without putting the card into his hand) plays a shaman right from the top. At the end of his turn I crop rotate away one bayou. It resolves and I grab a ghost quarter. I activate targeting his wasteland. He attempts to wasteland the stage, so I double crop rotate the bayou and the forest for Urborg and Depths, make a 20/20. He shows me the last card in his hand: a submerge, which he cannot cast. Game over.
Round 2: Eldrazi (2-0)
G 1: Opponent starts with a cavern of souls and passes. I play a bayou and thoughtseize, seeing chalice, eldrazi mimic, thought-knot, reality smasher, wasteland, ancient tomb. I take the chalice because I have a crop rotation, depths, and urborg in hand. He wastelands my bayou turn one, which ends up being fine because I draw stage and manage to play out the combo before he can find smasher mana.
(OUT: 3 NotW, 1 Map. IN: 3 decay, 1 Needle)
G 2: Opponent goes to 5. I have a thoughtseize and a duress, one of which he warping wails. He kept a hand on the strength of wasteland which I needle and he is unable to use. Takes me a few turns but I assemble the combo. He manages to cast a 2/2 endless one and no other creatures all game.
Round 3: MUD (2-1)
I knew this opponent pretty well, knew that he was usually on 12-post, stax, mud, or stompy, so I was hoping there would not be any quick blood moons. I also knew that he was a very experienced player, and although he mentioned he was new to this matchup I was still on my guard.
G 1: Fast mana helps me assemble the combo turn 3. Opponent managed to play a trinisphere and a goblin welder but it was just too slow.
(IN: 3 Abrupt Decay, 1 Needle. OUT: 3 NotW, 1 Map -- starting to get old typing this out . . . )
G 2: I keep a hand of bayou, depths, three discard spells, crop rotation, and sylvan scrying. After he plays out a mountain turn one I duress him. He reveals a hand with some cards and three wastelands. I felt the room start to spin and I gasped for air. Every noise seemed suddenly two decibels louder. Somewhere a man with a deep voice laughed in slow motion. My opponent wasted my bayou and two other lands, and somehow the game was still kind of close. An active Kuldotha Forgemaster eventually found an ensnaring bridge, and I died to a combination of combustible gearhulks and staff of domination, with a marit lage just getting tapped over and over. I saw neither a single decay nor a needle the whole game.
G 3: Thoughtseize turn one took away a monolith, leaving him light on mana. He managed to play out a metalworker and cast a trading post, but I had a crop rotation at the end of his turn three while he was tapped out that added a level of inevitability to the match. He flipped the top card of his deck as he was packing up, revealing an ensnaring bridge.
Round 4: Death and Taxes (2-0)
I knew this player was on Death and Taxes. We have played each other four weeks in a row now (counting this week), with an epic game three last week that ended with a judge confirming that a banisher priest played onto a battlefield with two dread of nights cannot successfully exile a marit lage. Which was good, because all four of my depths were in the graveyard at that point.
G 1: I start on urborg - thoughtseize, managing to strip a swords but revealing a hand of thalia, two flickerwisps, a karakas and a port (he mulled to six). It takes five turns but I managed to put the combo together by resolving a sylvan scrying and a map, one to get a stage and the other to get the steppe to swing through a couple of flickerwisps. Oddly, my opponent cast a sanctum prelate on 1 (turn after I resolved the map, thankfully) which I'm pretty sure turned off a swords he had in hand at the end of the game. In any case, seems like I was lucky to win this one, although I did have a NotW in hand when I sealed the deal.
(OUT: 4 Petal, 4 Spirit Guide, 3 Map, 1 S Scrying. IN: 3 decay, 3 Confidant, 2 dread of night, 2 lost legacy, 1 karakas, 1 needle)
G2: Opening seven had a swamp, stage, duress, 2 thoughtseize, dread of night, confidant. He opens on needle on stage. I open on dread of night. He casts vial turn two, leaving white mana up. I cast confidant which he sends down a path to exile. This, unfortunately for him, gave me the green mana I needed for a top-decked crop rotation. I manage over the next few turns to shred his hand and decay his needle, needling a wasteland in the process. He eventually manages to land a stoneforge mystic and attach a sword of fire and ice to it, but he only gets one attack in before I kill him with a bigger, more airborne, less destructible creature.
All in all I am quite happy with the deck. There is a lot of combo in my meta which I dodged on this particular night, so I'm not sure I would change the sideboard (at least not for these specific small events). The dark confidants have been excellent in a meta clogged with leovolds, which make library awful. Lost legacy is the card I would think about cutting most -- it can just end the game against sneak and show, ANT, aluren, food chain, high tide, and TES, all of which I play against regularly. In the past when I've taken the deck to larger events in the area (there is a monthly 2k and an every-so-often 1k both within driving distance) I've switched out the two dread of nights for a golgari charm and a chains of mephistopheles, which I would probably continue to do unless I expected a real surge in D&T. As for the Ballista plan. . . it makes the deck way more fun to play but I just don't think I'm good enough with the ambulating armories to make the sideboard flexible against non-miracles decks. Against miracles I usually go down 8 fast mana, 3 map, 1 crop rotation to bring in 3 decay, 3 confidant, 2 lost legacy, 1 needle, 1 chains, 1 golgari charm and 1 surgical -- which has been good to me thus far.
Thanks for reading. And thanks to everyone who puts their great ideas up here for people like me to steal -- I think this is one of the most helpful deck communities on here.
Yeah, I go back and forth on this. There is quite a bit of BR Reanimator in my local meta, and my prior deck crushed BR--so I've wanted to continue that trend and my current sideboard allows that matchup to be very positive for me. Surgical just isn't much of a guarantee against that deck. For the Miracles matchup, since I have Chalice, Lost Legacy kind of fills that slot for getting rid of terminus. I just haven't run against Lands too many times since I started playing this deck, so I haven't gathered enough anecdotal data to change my sideboard for it yet. And storm I don't worry too much because Chalice and/or discard crushes them. Anyhow, that is my reasoning for my current choices, but I am still feeling out different matchups--and I've recently been re-considering Chalice as I'm not sure I need it; and if that changed, several other choices in the deck/sideboard would also change. (Like I would start playing expedition maps).
Haha my manabase being displayed in public is making me a little self-conscious. I only have two Verdant Catacombs right now and only two Bayous... hence the Wooded Foothills and Llanowar Wastes :-)
So far I can only point to one or two games where that mattered at all, luckily. And...the store where I won the prize money didn't have any Bayous or V-cats for sale! So I will continue on with a scattered mana base for the time being...
Focused on the end of your post, quoted above.
1) Sanctum Prelate's effect doesn't only apply to opponents? Holy ****! Learn something new every day. I can't wait to get someone with that one. I usually win by my opponent casting Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, but now I'm going to get them with that one. Hopefully they put it on 1.
2) I probably wouldn't cut any land searches vs. Death and Taxes with a typical sideboard plan. It looks like your plan is to find Dread of Night to buy time rather than actively killing your opponent by searching for Ghost Quarter and more Stages, which is fine. However, be aware that your gameplan *will* fall apart if they find a Council's Judgment and lands.
3) Dark Confidant vs. Libary: Sometimes I don't even bring in Library vs. BUG, but I guess I could see the appeal for Bob vs Leovold. I don't see it vs Death and Taxes personally, because flipping Not of This World would really hurt and you're definitely leaving those in. Death and Taxes doesn't have an easy way to deal with Sylvan Library besides providing a clock (which you can turn off with your Dread of Night / Golgari Charm plan) or Council's Judgment, which we're straining already with Needles (and Dread of Night I guess).
4) I could try your sideboard plan vs. Miracles. It has a lot of different things going on, which is something I'm not good at evaluating in that matchup. I definitely think you are still soft to Mentor or a fast Jace, both of which Ballista can theoretically deal with.

I feel like most D&T players technically know that Prelate is symmetrical, but they kind of forget about it as they get caught up in the excitement of shutting down opponent spells. The anxiety of a crop rotation can repress the fact that they are holding a swords.
I think this is right. In the future I would stick to the same plan but leave out the two Lost Legacy in order to keep a sylvan and a map. The DoN is really just to buy time, and chipping away at life total with Confidant is surprisingly relevant -- two hits and a single swing with batterskull still leaves them in Dr. Lage range. Therefore losing it to a c judgment or disenchant (the latter of which happened to me online recently) is okay because they are far enough behind that the combo is ready to go.
All good points. I have played Bob/NotW roulette against D&T in 9 matches so far and have not flipped one to a bob trigger yet (furiously knocking on wood), but you are right that it feels really bad to put them both in the deck. Overall I find sylvan library is less flexible in the meta as a whole -- although I agree with you it is better against D&T for sure. I am trying to maximize the value of each of my sideboard slots and because of leovold in particular I find bob more useful across the board than library. That said, library may ultimately be the right choice. I will keep testing.
I probably didn't make it clear enough in the post, but I am a big fan of the Ballista plan against miracles. I've now actually gotten to play it out against miracles over 4 matches and finished 3-1 in that span (and the one loss was against a miracles player who blind topdecked an entreat when I could reduce his life to one with a Ballista in hand and an active stronghold). However, in 3 matches against D&T, 2 matches against elves, and 2 matches against ANT I went a total of 1-6. As I said in my original post (and I'm not being sarcastic) I just don't feel like I'm good enough with the Ballistas to make the sideboard work against a variety of decks. I'm going to keep trying them out because I agree with you that they are better than almost any other miracles plan, but for paper events (for now) I'm going to keep using the sideboard I find most flexible against a variety of decks.
Thanks for your feedback!
Hey All,
Has anyone tried out Funeral Charm? I am thinking of replacing one of my discard spells with it. I know, seems bad--but hear me out! :-)
Utility:
Discard mode is arguably the weakest mode on the card, but can be used to instant speed/draw step make them discard.
+2/-1 mode can kill a problem dork like Thalia, Revoker, Mimic, what-have-you, which is a really useful 1 mana effect for this deck in some cases. Furthermore, when our opponent tries to go to 21 or 22 with a deathrite activation, we make our Marit Lage a 22/19 :-)
Swampwalk! So good. We usually have Urborg in play, so our opponents lands are swamps. Making Marit Lage unblockable is definitely relevant in some matchups (DnT, Lands, BUG, Miracles, Delver).
So...I admit that this tech may be going a bit too deep for something pretty situational. However, I think it is especially useful in the DnT matchup, which I find to be the most challenging. I will start trying it out, and please let me know if you have tried it or decide to do some testing with it :-)
Thanks!
I think funeral charm as a 1 of should be doable. I know my friend swears by piracy charm in infect and I think it could apply here as well
One reason is that I absolutely despise giving opponents an untapped basic land in certain match-ups. Using Crop Rotation into Wasteland has won me many matches against miracles when they either only leave up a Tundra or didn't have a draw that allowed for the fetching of a basic plains. Cutting them off of white plays through even Terminus and is a nice option to have that comes up from time to time. Same deal vs Death and Taxes where they sometimes have say a Karakas, Plains, and Thalia on board (or similar setup like Port+ Plains). Hitting the Karakas or Port at the end of their second main phase shuts off their ability to cast swords through Thalia when Ghost Quarter lets them play through it. Same deal vs a single untapped Karakas. You GQ the Karakas only to have a basic plains set up Swords if there is no Thalia. Same against Lands where I've seen a GQ on their Wasteland result in the lands player fetching a basic forest and casting Crop Rotation for Karakas when they had no other mana up at the time. Wasteland can also slow down (or mana screw when you see their hand and it's appropriate) every deck with basics in them if they fetch a dual or play a nonbasic early.
Secondary reasons include loving having one of each post board. A second strip effect is very useful in lots of matchups, especially against Loam or lands oriented matchups that also run GQ. Do you needle GQ if they play one and then give yourself only a handful of outs to other possible problem lands? I like the flexibility of being able to Needle either Wasteland or GQ as appropriate and still have a tutorable answer to problem lands.
The main downside people have said to me is that what if you have to needle Wasteland? Against Delver that doesn't matter at all since if you resolve Needle on wasteland game 1, it is close to impossible to lose. In some match-ups it could come up, but very rarely has in my experience. The upsides outweigh the downsides in my opinion.
4-round Legacy event, ID'd for 1st. List was DNSolvers but -1 Abrupt, -2 Ballista, +2 Chalice, +1 Loam.
Round 1: ANT (2-0)
G1 on the play I Duress and see Burning Wish, 2 LED, 2 Dark Rit, 1 Petal, 1 Delta. I take Wish and make Lage before he can get a lethal Tendrils (casts it for 8 storm and I win at 4 life with 2 Lage swings).
G2 he goes off T1 but I have Surgical. Misplay like a mofo (first time playing ANT and I don't know how LED discarding his PIF works), but he kills himself by hitting PIF and Tendrils on first Ad Nauseum and not finding red mana on 2nd Ad Nauseum.
Board: I think it was -3 Needle, -1 Map, +2 Surgical +2 Chalice. May have put a Decay in too.
Round 2: Miracles (2-0)
He's never played the matchup. I have T1 Thoughtseize, T2Hex/Depths to win before he can draw anything.
G2 we play real magic, I have 2 Libraries on T3 and out-card him. At the end of the game I crack a map for Urborg, cast 2 Duress, Surgical his StP and see HE BOARDED OUT TERMINUS. Sick. I quickly combo at 2 life with blocking Hexmages for his on board Snapcaster and 2 backup Not of this World for a topdecked Karakas/Jace.
Board: -8 fast mana, -2/3 Crop rotations, -2/3 discard, + everything except Loam and Karakas. However I saw Clique G2 and would have brought it in G3
Round 3: BUG Midrange (2-0)
G1 I once again have Thoughtseize into Hex/Depths.
G2 Not memorable. He had discard but I got there quickly.
Board: -3 NotW, +1 Surgical, +1 Library, +1 Needle
Round 4: D&T (2-0)
G1 goes Bayou into Map, he Wastelands. I drop Stage and pass, he Wastelands and I respond with Spirit Guide, Crop Rot the Stage for Urborg. On my turn Depths, Mage with NotW backup.
G2 he needles Stage, I needle Wasteland. His second land is Wasteland, I decide to gun for it and once again Crop Rot off a Guide for Urborg, drop Depths/Mage. This was weak to Needle/Karakas but I decided to try it. He drops Plains and concedes.
Board: -4 Petal, -3 Duress, -1 Bog, +3 Abrupt, +2 Ballista, +1 Stronghold, +1 Needle, +1 Sylvan Library/Karakas.
I drew SUPER hot all day and was lucky for the messed up boarding by Miracles. Hope to keep the undefeated streak alive!
Oddly enough it was ANT but he ran the Wish anyway. No copies of Mox or Empty or Rite in the deck. Not sure how many wishes he was on.
As for Ballista, I saw it off my final Library trigger before fetching the Urborg in G2 against Miracles, but I was on 6 life and couldn't afford to draw it if I needed to Surgical that turn. Turns out I did and it won't me the match. I'll keep reporting each Sunday though and I may be headed to Eternal Extravaganza this weekend. Hopefully Ballista shows up :)
Took Negators BUG list to a weekly 4-round today. 3-1

The first tourney was a weekly 3 round legacy out of 30 people, i went 2-1 taking 8th overall.
ROUND 1 - Eldrazi (2-0)
game one he has a fast trinisphere, i pay three to tutor up land and make token. game two trim a lot of one drops as i expect my opponent to chalice on 1 against me and side in pretty much anything useful 2 drop into my board. he goes turn1 chalice on 1, i give him a frustrated poker face even though i had an urborg hex depths to token combo the next turn.
ROUND 2 - Sultai Delver (0-2)
game one i felt like i played correctly but my opponent kept drawing the answers to my cards; i dont remember exactly but im pretty sure he chumped token with flipped delver then abrupt decay my needle on LOTV into cast her make me sac - gg. game two i made a critical mistake crop rotating when i should not have thinking there was a different land in my hand, pretty much just a straight up punt.
Round 3 - Miracles (2-0)
game one was just perfect for me and he kept a really sketchy hand. I remember duress out the gate then he played out counter balance. I drew my one of Decay out of the board and decay Balance then play out hexmage with NOTW in hand. He tries to swords i counter and swing in. game two my only real tech for the matchup comes in was the drownyard to mill his counter balance etc. i keep a slower hand that has stage and sylvan scry so I try it out. on one of the early turns i copy a basic island of his then resolve a tutor for drownyard. at this point i pretty much created my own window by just throwing off his game plan - i believe the play was like decay his top - he taps and draws card, i then drownyard his library and then i cast hexmage into a blind flip off his balance and he reveals a land. I make token and also had another NOTW for a karakas he had out. Wish I could remember the match a little better than described here but all in all what won the match was combination of having a NOTW, knowing his hand via duress, thoughtseize, surgical, along with help from drownyard. I dunno if drownyard is actually that good but it really did some work in this matchup at least by throwing off my opponent.
the second tourney was a 4 round win a box with around 15 ppl. I went 4-0.
ROUND 1 - Storm (2-0)
Game one i had a turn 2 token, he scoops. game 2 draw into a ton of hand hate and a slow token. I surgical his chain of vapor and he has not much of a hand left at that point and i make token and swing in.
ROUND 2 - 12 Post Variant (2-1)
game one I make a quick token and swing in over some eldrazi. game two I take a really bad line to try and wreck his mana by taking an expo map from his and and ghost quarter his sol land cause he runs no basics. i left an ugin in his hand thinking he wouldnt be able to make 8 mana before i make a token; i was wrong he top decks some crazy ramp, casts ugin and i play it out hoping to draw a hexmage and it never comes. game 3 i double ghost quarter him and it sets him way back, but i also only had like a stage out so we are both pretty much in top deck mode. he expo maps for a karakas but doesnt know i have a NOTW in hand, some turns go by and i make token he tries to karakas and i NOTW for the win.
ROUND 3 - Shardless Sultai (2-1)
game one goes a bit grindy and by the time i make a token he has like 2 goyfs out and an agent, i cast a hexmage out to try and block from lethal cause i had to swing through a strix and then swing again next turn to win - he draws decay and gets my hexmage for the win. Game 2 I draw a number of needle / hand hate/ surgical to basically exhaust his lines of doing really anything. it was basically one of those situations where his hand hate cannot take my lands which i proceed to play and combo him for a win. - ive realized a lot of these bug matchups are like who draws needle / decay at the correct time. game three i win off of his total misplay. i had an early token ready to make with petals and stage, and he missed a land drop but has DRS out. I saw his hand earlier and knew that he had LOTV in hand and hand hate, I remember thinking that if he played the LOTV then it would basically put me in check until i could answer her, but instead he thoughtseized me and then realized he had just punted because i had Depths in hand so I just played around LOTV either way and made token on his endstep for the win.
ROUND 4 - Death and Taxes (2-1)
game one i make a quick token and have NOTW to take care of swords for the win. game two i just get too far behind and stupid flickwhisp gets me. game three went super grindy and i had a token get swords so im up on life and i had to surgical my own depths in response to him trying to surgical my depths in grave from first token. sylvan library buys me a few turns with sweepers and then winning play is basically needle on his jitte out and make token with 2 NOTW in hand for all his removal.
I know the meta is different everywhere and the level of play can vary, but this deck was awesome all week with an overall of 6-1. There are a lot of different builds, but am really liking my current. I guess I've been thinking a lot about putting in expo map over my into the north's because blood moon decks have been wrecking me in previous weeks. also has anyone tested out Drop of Honey or Chains of Mestoph? I know they're expensive and probably not all that good, but im pretty sure drop kills True Name and cant kill ML token....I guess all the other removal and sweepers are better. And then Chains seems good against blue decks, maybe help out the Miracles Matchup??? if anyone has tested would love to hear how that went. also is Pernicious deed any good?
@Negator77 thanks for the explanation on wasteland. I took your 75 to a 3-0 finish last week. There was never a situation where wasteland and pithing needle conflicted. I'm sold on this list man. It's really well tuned, great job.
Current Depths List: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bg-hexmage-depths/
If I'm not mistaken, you can use Funeral Charm to discard a Miracle'd Terminus. Extra spicy. I like it. Also flushes out any sneaky plays by DnT before you combo out if they're holding just 1 card (Flickerwisp off of Vial or a StP).
